In the U.S., kittens generally need a series of FVRCP vaccinations, while adult boosters, rabies shots, feline leukemia (FeLV) vaccination and parasite prevention follow different rules. Your veterinarian should set the plan using your cat’s age, vaccine records, health, exposure risks, local rabies law and the specific product label.
At a glance: common schedules for cats
This overview reflects U.S.-oriented guidance from the 2020 AAHA/AAFP feline vaccination guidelines and the Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC). Vaccine formulation, route, local rules and an individual cat’s risk can change the schedule.

Which vaccines do cats need, and how often?
FVRCP: the core kitten vaccine
FVRCP protects against feline panleukopenia (FPV), feline herpesvirus-1 (FHV-1) and feline calicivirus (FCV). AAHA/AAFP recommends beginning the injectable series as early as 6 weeks of age and repeating doses every 3–4 weeks until the kitten is 16–20 weeks old. The series uses several doses because kittens’ ages and immune responses vary; your veterinarian will determine the appropriate timing for your kitten.

FVRCP boosters after kittenhood
AAHA/AAFP advises considering a booster at about 6 months rather than waiting until the first birthday, to reduce the potential window of susceptibility. For the specified parenteral (injected) vaccines, the guidance then describes revaccination every 3 years. That interval should not be applied automatically to every formulation or route; follow your veterinarian’s schedule for the product used.

Rabies: law and label determine timing
Rabies vaccination timing depends on local law and the vaccine label. Some jurisdictions permit a 3-year interval when the cat receives a vaccine labeled for that interval; this is not a universal rule. AAHA/AAFP’s instruction is to “Follow vaccine label instructions and local laws.” Check the requirements where you live with your veterinarian or local animal-health authority.
FeLV: vaccination depends on age and exposure
Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) vaccination is treated as core for kittens and cats younger than 1 year because of their age-related susceptibility. The initial course is two doses, 3–4 weeks apart, beginning as early as 8 weeks; the guideline calls for checking FeLV antigen status before vaccination.

For adult cats, FeLV vaccination is generally a risk-based decision. A low-risk adult may not need routine vaccination, while a cat with ongoing exposure—such as regular contact with cats of unknown FeLV status—may need boosters. AAHA/AAFP describes annual revaccination for high-risk cats with regular exposure; intervals for some inactivated products may vary where labeling permits. Ask your veterinarian to assess the cat’s actual exposure rather than relying on an indoor/outdoor label alone.
How often do cats need parasite prevention?
Heartworm, fleas and ticks
CAPC recommends year-round heartworm prevention for all cats, including indoor cats, and year-round flea and tick control. Mosquitoes can enter homes, so living indoors does not remove the heartworm-prevention question. CAPC puts it plainly: “All cats, regardless of their lifestyle, should be on year-round heartworm prevention.”

The exact product and dosing interval depend on the cat and the product label. Have your veterinarian select an appropriate preventive and explain how often to administer it; do not substitute a dog product or assume all cat products use the same interval.
Intestinal worms and testing
CAPC recommends anthelmintic (deworming) treatment beginning at 2 weeks of age and repeated every 2 weeks until regular broad-spectrum parasite control begins. It also recommends at least four intestinal-parasite tests during a kitten’s first year and at least two per year for adult cats. A cat’s health and lifestyle may call for a different testing frequency.

Does an indoor cat need the same schedule?
Not necessarily. Indoor access, time outdoors, contact with other cats, boarding or group housing, travel and local disease and parasite risks can all affect recommendations. Core vaccines are broadly recommended, while non-core vaccines are chosen through an individual risk-benefit assessment. Indoor status does not, by itself, settle every prevention question: CAPC recommends year-round heartworm prevention even for indoor cats.

CAPC’s general guidance recommends preventive physical examinations at least every 6–12 months. These visits give the veterinarian a chance to review records, check health and exposure changes, and adjust vaccine, parasite-prevention and testing plans.

How to get an accurate schedule for your cat
- Gather the records. Bring vaccine dates and product details, if available, plus any FeLV test results. If records are missing, tell the clinic rather than guessing at prior doses.
- Describe the cat’s routine. Mention outdoor access, contact with other cats, boarding, travel and any changes in exposure.
- Ask for dates and product-specific instructions. Confirm when each vaccine or preventive is due, what interval the label requires, and whether local rabies rules affect the date.
- Keep a written reminder. Record the product, dose date and next due date as provided by the veterinary clinic.
These recommendations are general guidance, not a cat-specific medical plan. The AAHA/AAFP vaccine guidance cited here was published in 2020; CAPC parasite guidance pages cited here were updated in 2025–2026. Product labels and local rabies law govern where they differ.
