Scoop your cat’s litter box every day. As a practical starting point, replace non-clumping litter at least once a week and clumping litter about every two weeks. Wash the empty box with hot water and mild dish detergent when you change the litter, then dry it before refilling. Change litter sooner if it no longer looks and smells dry and clean, and clean more often when more cats use the box.

How often to scoop and replace cat litter

Daily scooping and full litter replacement are separate parts of the routine. For clumping litter, Cornell’s Feline Health Center recommends removing feces and clumps daily and adding clean litter as needed. The Humane Society of the United States also advises scooping every day.

Litter type Practical full-change baseline Daily care
Non-clumping Replace at least once a week, according to the Humane Society of the United States’ 2023 guide. Scoop waste daily.
Clumping Replace about every two weeks, according to the Humane Society of the United States’ 2023 guide. Remove feces and urine clumps daily; top up with clean litter as needed.

These intervals are general recommendations, not a fixed schedule that suits every litter, box, or household. Cornell advises changing litter often enough that it stays dry and clean. If it looks or smells soiled before the suggested full-change time, replace it sooner.

How to adjust the schedule for your household

More cats mean more frequent cleaning

A box used by several cats accumulates waste more quickly, so it may need attention more often. Cornell’s general guidance is to provide one litter box per cat, plus one extra. That gives cats more options and helps avoid relying on a single heavily used box.

  • LOW TRACKING: A unique formulation of medium grain clay helps keep litter in the box where it belongs.

Let litter condition guide you

Check the box as part of daily scooping. If the remaining litter no longer looks and smells dry and clean, do a full change rather than waiting for the usual interval. The right schedule depends on how many cats use the box and how quickly the litter becomes soiled.

How to wash the litter box

  1. Empty the box when you do a full litter change, or sooner if the box needs cleaning.
  2. Wash it with hot water and mild dish detergent. Cornell recommends gentle detergent; the Humane Society cautions against bleach and ammonia because their scent may put cats off.
  3. Rinse and dry the box before adding fresh litter.

Wash your hands after handling used litter or the box. Cornell advises wearing gloves when handling potentially contaminated material. Its guidance says pregnant or immunosuppressed people should not clean the litter box; consult the CDC for current human-health guidance on toxoplasmosis.

What if your cat avoids a clean litter box?

A dirty box can put a cat off using it, but it is not the only possible cause. Cornell notes that cats may dislike the litter itself and that most cats prefer unscented litter. Individual preferences vary, so a scented product is not automatically a better choice just because it masks odors for people.

If your cat consistently stops using the box, arrange a veterinary evaluation rather than assuming a cleaning change will solve the problem. House-soiling can have a medical cause.
