Spot-clean a hamster’s cage every few days—or daily, according to some animal-welfare organizations—and remove anything wet, soiled or uneaten as soon as you find it. How often to do a deeper clean depends on cage size and your hamster’s toilet habits: published guidance ranges from weekly for small cages to once or twice a month for many setups. There is no single schedule that fits every hamster.
Spot cleaning and full cleaning are different jobs
A spot clean removes dirty material without stripping the whole habitat. Take out wet or soiled bedding, faeces and uneaten fresh food, and clean any item that has become dirty. Don’t leave damp or smelly bedding in place until the next scheduled clean.
A full or deep clean involves removing most of the bedding and washing the enclosure and soiled accessories. It is more disruptive, so it should not automatically mean throwing away every bit of familiar bedding each week.
How often should each type of cleaning happen?
Animal-welfare organizations publish different schedules. Their recommendations are guidance, not a measured scientific threshold, so use them alongside the condition of the cage and your hamster’s habits.

| Organization | Spot-clean guidance | Full-clean guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Blue Cross | Every few days; remove soiled bedding and uneaten food. | Usually once or twice a month. Adjust for cage size and whether the hamster uses a specific toilet area. |
| RSPCA | Every few days; remove soiled bedding, uneaten food and faeces. | Once or twice a month is sufficient in most cases; adjust for cage size and toilet habits. |
| PDSA | Daily. | Typically weekly for small cages; every few weeks for larger setups. |
| BC SPCA | Clean toilet areas every other day. | Once a week. |
The practical takeaway is not to impose a weekly, complete strip-down on every hamster. Remove soiled material promptly, then set the deeper-clean interval according to the enclosure’s size, how consistently your hamster toilets in one area, and whether bedding or accessories are getting dirty. A larger habitat or a hamster with a reliable toilet corner may need less frequent full cleaning than a small cage that gets soiled quickly.
How to clean without causing unnecessary stress
- Choose a time when your hamster is awake. The RSPCA warns that waking a sleeping hamster in the middle of the day can be stressful. Let your hamster wake naturally before starting.
- Move your hamster to a secure place. Put them in a safe carrier or playpen while you clean, following the Blue Cross guidance.
- Remove dirty material and save clean bedding. Clear soiled bedding and uneaten food, and clean any dirty accessories. Keep some dry, unsoiled bedding and nesting material aside. The RSPCA explains that scent matters to hamsters and recommends transferring a small amount of familiar, clean material back after cleaning.
- Wash the enclosure during a full clean. Use a cleaner labelled safe for pets or small animals. Wash and rinse the enclosure and accessories thoroughly, then let them dry completely before adding bedding. Blue Cross also recommends washing food bowls and the water bottle with warm water; PDSA likewise advises rinsing and drying items thoroughly.
- Set the habitat back up with familiar material. Add fresh bedding and return hides and toys. Blue Cross suggests saving about a third of the bedding during a full clean; treat that as its recommendation, not a universal required amount.
- Return your hamster once everything is dry. Make sure the bedding and enclosure are dry and the familiar nest material is back before moving them home.
When to adjust the schedule
- Clean sooner if you find dampness or odour. Don’t wait for a calendar date to remove wet bedding or spoiled food.
- Consider the enclosure and toilet area. Cage size and whether your hamster regularly uses one toilet spot affect how quickly the habitat needs a deeper clean.
- Keep routine cleaning local where possible. Spot cleaning helps remove waste without disturbing as much clean bedding and scent as a full clean.
For the bedding itself, Blue Cross lists paper-based bedding among suitable choices and recommends providing plenty of deep bedding. Look for dust-extracted paper-based hamster bedding, and follow the product’s directions. For a full wash, check the cleaner’s label to confirm it is suitable for pets or small animals; no specific brand is endorsed here.
