Brush a Biewer Terrier in a full, long coat every day. Daily brushing is the clearest breed-specific baseline, while an every-other-day routine is the practical minimum cited in an American Kennel Club (AKC) breed feature. If your dog wears a short puppy cut, weekly brushing may be enough. Bathing is less settled: AKC says to bathe occasionally, whereas the Canadian Kennel Club and PetMD’s summary of the Biewer Terrier Club of America guidance describe weekly bathing. Use your dog’s coat condition, skin, lifestyle and drying routine to choose the interval.
Grooming also includes nails, ears and teeth. Those tasks need regular attention, but the cited breed-care guidance does not prescribe a universal number of days between them. The schedule below separates what is firmly supported from what must be adjusted for the individual dog.

The practical Biewer Terrier grooming schedule
A Biewer Terrier’s grooming workload is determined mostly by coat length and texture. The United Kennel Club standard describes a long, flowing, soft silky coat; the show description is straight and without an undercoat. A companion dog does not have to retain a floor-length show coat, and many owners choose a shorter trim for easier maintenance.

| Brush and comb | Daily. Every other day is the practical minimum reported by an AKC breed feature. | Weekly brushing may suffice. | AKC says the long coat requires daily brushing and that short coats need less grooming. |
| Bath | Choose an interval based on coat and lifestyle; recommendations range from occasional to weekly. | No separate evidence-based interval is stated. | AKC says occasional bathing; the Canadian Kennel Club and PetMD’s account of breed-club guidance say weekly. |
| Nails | Check and trim regularly. | Check and trim regularly. | AKC advises preventing overgrowth, splitting and cracking but gives no fixed interval. |
| Ears | Check regularly for wax and debris. | Check regularly for wax and debris. | AKC recommends checks to reduce the chance of infection; no fixed interval is given. |
| Teeth | Brush regularly. | Brush regularly. | AKC includes tooth brushing in routine breed care without specifying a universal cadence. |
These are starting points, not a substitute for inspecting your own dog. A soft, cottony coat can tangle faster than a sleek, silky one, and a dog that runs outdoors, swims or gets dirty may need cleaning sooner than a mostly indoor dog.

Why a long Biewer coat needs daily attention
Long hair catches on itself, collars, harnesses, bedding and vegetation. Small knots can tighten close to the skin before they are visible from above. AKC’s breed page states plainly: “The Biewer Terrier has a long coat that requires daily brushing.” Its breed feature reports that, for a full long silky coat, Torres recommends “daily or every-other-day grooming.” Treat the second interval as a minimum workable routine rather than permission to skip several days.
Daily grooming is not necessarily a long salon session. Short, calm sessions prevent a large detangling job later. Work in sections from the skin outward, and use your fingers to locate tangles before pulling a brush through them. If your dog is sensitive, split the routine into two sessions and reward stillness.
Daily long-coat checklist
- Choose a well-lit, non-slip surface and check the coat for burrs, dampness or new knots.
- Part the hair so you can see the skin. Start at the feet, legs and areas under the harness, then move up the body.
- Use a pin brush in small sections, brushing from the ends toward the roots while supporting the hair near the skin.
- Follow with a metal comb. The comb should pass from skin to tip; resistance identifies a section that needs slower hand work.
- Inspect behind the ears, under the armpits, around the collar and at the tail base before finishing.
- Check paws and sanitary areas for trapped debris, and stop if the skin looks sore or inflamed.
Do not repeatedly rake through a tight mat. Pulling can hurt the dog and tear fragile hair. For a mat close to the skin, ask a groomer to remove it safely rather than cutting blindly with scissors.

When a short puppy cut is the better schedule
A short trim reduces the amount of hair available to tangle and can make home care realistic for busy households, older dogs or dogs that dislike long sessions. The AKC breed feature says weekly brushing can suffice for a short puppy cut. “Weekly” still means a complete check of the entire coat, not a quick pass over the back.

Weekly short-coat routine
- Brush the whole body with a pin brush, including legs, tail and the hair under the harness.
- Run a metal comb through friction points and feathering; these areas may remain longer after a trim.
- Check the skin for redness, flakes, bumps, parasites or dampness hidden by the hair.
- Examine paws, nails, ears and teeth so the weekly session doubles as a health check.
A short cut does not eliminate grooming. Hair grows unevenly, nails continue to overgrow and ears and teeth still need attention. Schedule a trim when the coat begins catching on objects, matting despite weekly brushing or obscuring the dog’s eyes and movement.
How often should you bathe a Biewer Terrier?
The published recommendations do not agree, and it is more accurate to say so than to invent a single “correct” interval.
- AKC’s Biewer Terrier breed page describes bathing as occasional.
- The Canadian Kennel Club gives a weekly bathing recommendation.
- PetMD summarizes the Biewer Terrier Club of America’s recommendation as weekly bathing.
For that reason, use weekly bathing as one documented option, not a rule every Biewer must follow. A dog that stays clean and is brushed thoroughly may fit the “occasional” approach. A dog that collects dirt, has a persistently oily or odorous coat, swims or participates in performance activities may need more frequent washing. Conversely, unnecessary bathing can dry or irritate skin.
A safe bath routine
- Brush and comb out loose dirt and small tangles before adding water. Water can tighten existing mats.
- Use lukewarm water and a dog-formulated shampoo. Keep products out of the eyes and ear canals.
- Rinse until the water runs clear and no product remains at the skin.
- Press with towels rather than rubbing the long hair into knots.
- Dry completely, using a low, comfortable airflow if your dog accepts it, and brush in sections as the coat dries.
- Recheck friction points after drying; damp hair hidden under a harness can mat quickly.
If bathing leaves the skin persistently red, itchy, flaky or greasy, stop experimenting with intervals and ask a veterinarian. Those signs can reflect a skin or ear problem rather than a simple grooming schedule.

Nails, ears and teeth belong on the calendar
Neither coat length nor a puppy cut changes the need for basic maintenance. AKC includes all three tasks in Biewer Terrier care, but does not assign a universal number of days between them.
Nails
Inspect nails regularly and trim before they touch the floor or begin to change the dog’s gait. AKC specifically warns against overgrowth, splitting and cracking. Dogs that walk frequently on hard surfaces may wear nails differently from dogs that spend most of their time indoors, so visual and sound checks are more useful than a fixed monthly rule. If you are unsure where the quick is, have a veterinary professional or experienced groomer demonstrate.
Ears
Look at the ear leather and opening during routine brushing. Wax, debris, unusual odor, redness, swelling or head shaking warrants attention. Clean only as directed by your veterinarian; pushing cotton swabs into the canal can injure the ear or pack debris deeper. Recurrent buildup or discomfort should be evaluated rather than managed by increasingly frequent home cleaning.

Tools that match a silky coat
PetMD identifies a pin brush or metal comb for frequent brushing, and AKC advises using quality coat products. These are tool categories, not endorsements of a particular brand or model.
- Pin brush: useful for working through the coat in manageable sections without rushing.
- Metal comb: a finishing check that reveals knots a brush can glide over.
- Dog shampoo and conditioner, when appropriate: choose products suited to canine skin and rinse completely.
- Nail trimmers or a grinder: use only if you can see and control the amount removed safely.
- Absorbent towels and a secure, non-slip surface: reduce slipping and post-bath tangling.
Keep tools clean and replace bent pins or a damaged comb. A groomer can show you the correct pressure and sectioning technique for your dog’s coat type.
Full coat or short trim: choosing the workload
| Choice | Brushing commitment | Presentation | Who may prefer it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full, long silky coat | Daily; every other day is the reported minimum range. | Closest to the long, flowing coat described in the UKC standard; suitable when maintaining that appearance is a priority. | Owners who enjoy frequent coat care and can keep the dog clean, dry and tangle-free. |
| Short puppy cut | Weekly brushing may be sufficient, with checks of any longer feathering. | Practical pet presentation rather than a floor-length show look. | Owners seeking less daily work, or dogs that tolerate shorter sessions better. |
The UKC standard notes that hair may be clipped for safety in performance events. That supports trimming for practical reasons; it does not mean every companion dog should be clipped or that a show coat is mandatory.

No cited source establishes a universal salon appointment cadence or grooming cost, so book according to regrowth, coat condition and your ability to maintain the coat between visits.
Signs your schedule needs adjustment
- Knots appear before the next planned session: increase brushing frequency, shorten the coat or review technique.
- The comb will not reach the skin: stop pulling and arrange professional dematting or clipping.
- Coat stays damp after baths: improve sectioned drying and consider whether baths are too frequent for your routine.
- Redness, odor, repeated ear debris or itching: seek veterinary advice instead of adding more shampoo or ear cleaning.
- Your dog avoids the brush: shorten sessions, reward calm behavior and get a professional demonstration before forcing the process.
A simple calendar to start with
For a full coat, set a daily reminder for brushing and combing, then perform quick nail, ear and mouth checks during those sessions. For a puppy cut, schedule a thorough weekly brush-and-check session and inspect the coat briefly whenever you remove a harness or return from outdoor activity. Place baths on a flexible calendar: follow an occasional routine if the coat remains clean and healthy, or a weekly routine if that better matches your dog’s condition and the guidance you choose to follow.
Whichever style you choose, consistency matters more than a heroic grooming session after weeks of neglect. The goal is a comfortable dog, healthy skin, functional nails, clean ears and a coat that can be combed without pain.
