Follow the schedule for your specific model: manufacturers’ recommendations vary, and there is no established universal interval.
A practical schedule for water changes
- At least weekly: Make a complete water change part of your regular routine. Catster’s veterinarian-reviewed guidance says the interval may range from every two to seven days, depending on the number of cats and the fountain maker’s directions. Catster
- Every two or three days when use is heavy: Several cats can use up water and leave more debris, so a more frequent refresh may be appropriate. Catster notes that some multi-cat homes may need a change every two or three days.
- Immediately if water looks dirty: Do not wait for the next scheduled change if the water appears cloudy, dirty, or slimy. The Vet Desk also recommends changing it sooner when it is visibly dirty. The Vet Desk
These are practical recommendations rather than a clinically established universal rule. A veterinarian-reviewed Catster article updated September 3, 2026, gives a two-to-seven-day range; The Vet Desk, in guidance last updated October 29, 2025, recommends a full change and clean every five days. Use the range as a starting point, then follow your fountain’s own instructions and the water’s condition.

Changing water is not the same as cleaning the fountain
Replacing or topping up water keeps the reservoir supplied with fresh water; cleaning removes residue and buildup from the bowl, pump, and other parts. A filter may catch debris, but it does not remove the need to refresh water or clean the fountain.
For example, Xiaomi Support recommends adding or replacing water every two to three days for the Xiaomi Smart Pet Fountain and cleaning it at least weekly, including the tank, pump filter cover, filter tray, and filter element. Xiaomi Support

How to clean, based on your fountain’s instructions

PetSafe directs owners to unplug and empty the fountain, wash the removed non-pump parts with unscented soap and warm water, and clean the pump parts in the same way. Replace filters on the schedule for your model
Filter timing is not uniform across fountains. Catster describes two to four weeks as a common replacement range, not a universal rule. For the Drinkwell Original, PetSafe says to change the filter when cleaning the fountain. Check the maker’s directions and use a replacement that fits your exact model; a filter does not substitute for fresh water or routine cleaning. Catster PetSafe Support

A fountain schedule cannot determine whether an individual cat is drinking enough. Water needs vary with factors including food, size, activity, and health. If your cat seems dehydrated or unwell, contact a veterinarian rather than relying on a water-change routine to address the concern. Catster
