Orangutan mothers appear to make peer play more accessible by changing where and when they travel with their young. A 2026 study of wild Bornean orangutans found that mothers travelled more around play encounters, apparently directing movement toward other orangutans’ core areas before play and back toward their own afterward. But the evidence does not show that mothers screen individual playmates for safety or apply a universal rule for choosing them.
How mothers may help young orangutans meet playmates
Orangutans are semi-solitary: adults generally do not stay close together, so a dependent youngster may have relatively few chances to interact with peers. In a 15-year study at Tuanan Research Station in Borneo, researchers found that mothers adjusted their ranging in ways that increased young offspring’s access to peer play. On days associated with play encounters, mothers spent more time travelling and less time feeding, according to the Max Planck Society’s October 7, 2026 report.
The underlying bioRxiv preprint analyzed 15 years of behavioral and movement data: approximately 30,000 observation hours involving 31 wild Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus wurmbii) mother-offspring pairs. It reports increased travel before and after play, with mothers’ movement oriented toward play partners’ core areas before encounters and toward their own core areas afterward. The authors interpret this pattern as evidence that play encounters were pursued over multiple days rather than happening by chance. Because this is a preprint, its findings should be treated as not yet established through peer review.
Do mothers choose safe playmates?
“Safe” is not an outcome measured by the studies described here. The evidence supports maternal facilitation of opportunities for play, not a demonstrated process in which mothers assess each potential partner’s temperament, risk, or safety. Nor does it establish that mothers plan playdates in the human sense; that phrase is an accessible metaphor, not proof of human-like planning.

A 2024 comparison of 39 immature orangutans at Tuanan in Borneo and Suaq in Sumatra found limited evidence that mothers selectively shape offspring socialization through their associations. Maternal relatives were preferred play partners at Tuanan, but that pattern did not appear at Suaq. The result is population-specific, not a general rule that orangutan mothers select kin as playmates.
Why play opportunities differ between populations
The 2024 study used more than 11,500 hours of full-day focal observations. Immatures at Suaq played socially more often overall than those at Tuanan, where partners were less frequently available. Yet when researchers considered time spent in association with other orangutans, young individuals at both sites were similarly likely to play. This points to opportunities for association as an important constraint; the comparison does not establish that any one ecological factor caused the difference.

| Measure | Tuanan, Borneo | Suaq, Sumatra |
|---|---|---|
| Overall social-play frequency | Lower than at Suaq in the 2024 comparison, where partners were less frequently available | Higher than at Tuanan in the 2024 comparison |
| Likelihood of play per time in association | Similar to Suaq | Similar to Tuanan |
| Maternal relatives as play partners | Preferred in the study | No comparable preference found |
These findings come from two study populations, not a controlled experiment. They show that play frequency and partner patterns vary by site, and they caution against treating one population’s social behavior as universal.
How age and sex relate to play partners
The 2024 comparison found that social-play partners changed as immatures grew older. Male immatures were more likely than females to engage in social play with individuals other than their mother. These patterns describe differences in observed play; they do not demonstrate that mothers actively direct older youngsters toward particular partners.

What research on adult males can—and cannot—tell us
A separate 2023 study of Bornean orangutans found that mothers with younger offspring were less social with males. Mother-offspring distance also decreased in the presence of male orangutans, but not female orangutans. This is evidence relevant to maternal proximity and possible protection; it does not show that mothers assess the safety of peer playmates or that adult-male avoidance explains the play encounters in the 2026 study.

A 2021 review of orangutan life history and rehabilitation notes that a pre-weaning infant may contact or play with another immature when its mother meets a female accompanied by offspring. Such observations help illustrate how contact can arise during maternal associations, but rehabilitation settings differ from wild, mother-reared development. They do not establish a wild pattern of maternal playmate selection.
