How Rescued Orangutans Are Rehabilitated Before Release Into the Wild

Rescued orangutans may spend years receiving care and learning to climb, forage, and build nests before teams assess whether they can safely live in protected forest.

Rescued orangutans may spend years in rehabilitation before they are ready for release. Care typically combines veterinary treatment with gradual learning and assessment of forest-survival skills: climbing, finding and processing natural foods, and building night nests. Release is considered only when an individual is healthy enough, sufficiently independent, and matched to suitable protected habitat. Some orangutans cannot safely return to the wild and remain in sanctuary care.

Rehabilitation is a staged process, not a quick transfer

A rescue centre cannot make an orangutan ready for the forest simply by moving it into trees. The animal may first need treatment, time to recover, and supervised opportunities to develop skills it would ordinarily learn while growing up with its mother. Care teams then assess whether it can live independently and whether a suitable release site is available.

There is no single timetable or protocol shared by all organizations. The Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOS Foundation) reports that the process it describes takes an average of over seven years from rescue to completion. That is an organization-reported average, not a universal duration: an individual’s age, health, experience, skills, and progress all matter.

The examples below come from different programs and places. BOS describes rehabilitation centres and release areas in Indonesian Kalimantan; Orangutan Foundation International (OFI) describes procedures at its own facilities; and an IUCN SSC case study examines releases at Tabin Wildlife Reserve in Sabah, Malaysia. Their accounts illustrate common decisions, not one combined program.

What happens after an orangutan is rescued?

Veterinary assessment, quarantine, and recovery

Care begins with an assessment of the orangutan’s condition. A rescued animal may be injured, malnourished, carrying parasites, or affected by another illness. Quarantine can help staff assess health and limit exposure between a new arrival and other orangutans while necessary treatment is provided.

OFI reports that its Orangutan Care Centre and Quarantine (OCCQ) uses an initial 30-day quarantine. Its described checks include blood, feces, and urine, with further tests for tuberculosis and hepatitis. OFI also describes treating parasites and other health problems before placing animals in age-appropriate groups. Those are OFI’s reported procedures; other centres may use different schedules or tests.

Care for young orphans

For an infant or young orphan, recovery can involve close caregiver attention and feeding as well as access to enrichment and forest environments as it develops. OFI describes caregivers as surrogate mothers. Their support helps young orangutans grow and practise, while the long-term aim is not to make the animal dependent on people.

That balance is important: an orphan needs care, but rehabilitation must also allow it to develop behaviours useful outside human care. As the animal matures and becomes more capable, supervised learning can give it opportunities to climb, explore, and encounter natural foods.

Which forest skills do orangutans need to learn?

Rehabilitation aims to build practical abilities that support life in the forest. The accounts from OFI and BOS-supported centres describe several connected skills rather than a single pass-or-fail trick:

  • Moving through the canopy: climbing and travelling among trees are part of navigating a forest environment.
  • Finding and processing food: an orangutan needs to locate natural foods and learn how to handle or prepare them.
  • Building a night nest: nest construction is a daily survival behaviour, not simply an activity for enrichment.
  • Responding to danger cues: Forest School practice described by Save the Orangutan includes learning to respond to signs of danger as well as climbing, foraging, and nest-building.

These abilities develop through practice. Caregivers supervise learning and provide support, with the intended progression toward increasing independence. Forest School gives orangutans opportunities to use their skills in forest settings rather than relying only on care-centre routines.

How do forest school and pre-release stages work?

Progressive learning at BOS-supported centres

Save the Orangutan describes a sequence at BOS-supported centres that includes Baby School, Forest School I and II, and pre-release islands. The stages reflect increasing independence: younger infants receive closer caregiver support, while animals that are more capable can move into more advanced forest learning. Exact age bands described by an individual program should not be treated as rules for every centre or every orangutan.

Forest School practice can include finding food, climbing high trees, building nests, and responding to danger cues. Caregivers supervise, but the animal must increasingly rely on what it can do for itself. This is one reason rehabilitation is measured in progress toward independence, not merely by the time an orangutan has spent in care.

Testing skills in a pre-release forest

At the BOS-supported centres described by Save the Orangutan, orangutans that demonstrate the necessary skills can move to pre-release rainforest islands. The islands offer a setting in which staff can assess how animals manage with less direct support. The account says orangutans forage most of their food independently there, while receiving supplementary fruit because the islands cannot provide enough food for all individuals.

That arrangement is not the same as complete independence in the wild. Supplementary food is part of the described pre-release setting, and staff use the period to observe readiness. In this program, candidates are expected to demonstrate survival skills through both a drought and a rainy season before complete reintroduction. Seasonal assessment is a criterion described for this program, not a universal standard applied everywhere.

How is readiness for release judged?

Readiness involves more than climbing well or building a nest. Care teams need to consider whether the individual can find and process food, move through the forest, and manage without routine human support. Health also matters: an animal that cannot safely cope with release conditions may need further care or may not be a candidate at all.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pre-release settings provide a chance to observe behaviour before the greater risks of release. The BOS Foundation describes pre-release as a test of skills learned in Forest School. Its account of an average rehabilitation period of over seven years underscores that the process may be long, but that figure should be read as the foundation’s reported average rather than a deadline or promise for any individual.

For a specific BOS-supported release, Save the Orangutan says candidates return to quarantine facilities for examination by a licensed veterinarian. The organization also describes grouping candidates by gender, behaviour, and age, then transporting them to remote forest sites and releasing them one by one. These details describe that program’s approach; they do not establish a universal release checklist.

How are release sites selected?

A capable candidate still needs a suitable place to go. The cited organizations describe looking for protected forest with food resources and manageable human pressures, but the criteria depend on the site and program.

  • Food and habitat: BOS’s account refers to protected rainforest with adequate carrying capacity. OFI says it selects protected forest that meets safety and seasonal wild-fruit requirements. The Tabin case study reports attention to food-tree density.
  • Human pressure and location: BOS describes limited human activity and areas without an existing wild orangutan population. The Tabin case study includes distance from settlements among its criteria.
  • Ability to monitor: The Tabin account also includes researcher access. Teams need to consider whether they can follow released animals, although tracking can be difficult in forest conditions.

These are examples from different accounts, not a single checklist that applies to every release. Habitat suitability, available food, human activity, and monitoring access all affect whether a site can support a release and how its outcome can be assessed.

Geography matters when interpreting these examples. The BOS accounts concern Indonesian Kalimantan, while Tabin Wildlife Reserve is in Sabah, Malaysia. OFI says Lamandau Wildlife Reserve was historically used for releases but that it no longer releases orangutans there; Lamandau should not be described as a current OFI release site.

What happens after an orangutan is released?

Release is followed by monitoring, not an assumption that the animal will immediately thrive without help. Save the Orangutan describes BOS-supported teams monitoring orangutans for two years, collecting behavioural information, and involving people from nearby communities. If an animal struggles, the described response may include veterinary examination, treatment, another release attempt, or return to the rehabilitation centre.

Monitoring can reveal both progress and problems. The 2013 IUCN SSC case study of releases at Tabin describes candidate screening, telemetry and behavioural monitoring, and difficulties tracking animals. It reports early deaths in the studied cohorts and continued dependence-related behaviour, alongside integration with wild orangutans and one released female giving birth to an infant. These observations belong to that historical case; they are not a current or universal survival rate.

The Tabin account therefore cautions against treating release as proof of success. An animal’s fate may be hard to follow, and outcomes in one study area cannot be used to predict every program’s results. The case study describes its project as partially successful, recognising the value of its telemetry work and behavioural data while also noting mortality among early candidates.

Why might a rescued orangutan never be released?

Release is not safe or possible for every individual. The BOS Foundation’s sanctuary-care factsheet describes several reasons an orangutan may remain in long-term care:

  • It arrived too late in life to learn the skills needed for survival in the forest.
  • It has tuberculosis or chronic respiratory disease and requires permanent quarantine.
  • It has a severe physical disability that prevents independent living.

For those animals, sanctuary care can mean ongoing veterinary attention, food, enrichment, and—in some cases—sanctuary islands. Remaining in care is not the same outcome as release, but it may be the safer one for an individual that cannot live independently or whose health creates risks.

How program-specific are the published timelines?

The figures below describe separate organizations or programs and should not be combined into one standard timetable.

Figure What it describes Attribution and qualification
Over seven years on average Time from rescue through rehabilitation completion BOS Foundation’s reported average for the process it describes; not a universal duration
30 days Initial quarantine OFI’s reported procedure at its OCCQ; not a general quarantine requirement
Two years Post-release monitoring Save the Orangutan’s description of BOS-supported monitoring
Drought and rainy season Seasonal survival-skill assessment before complete reintroduction Criterion described for the BOS-supported program in Save the Orangutan’s account

These figures answer different questions: how long one foundation says rehabilitation averages, how one facility handles initial quarantine, and how long one described program monitors after release. They do not establish a shared minimum, maximum, or success rate for all orangutan rehabilitation.
