How Researchers Identify Individual Wild Cats from Camera-Trap Photos

Researchers compare natural coat patterns across camera-trap photos to identify repeat sightings. Matching software helps find candidates, but human review confirms them.

Researchers identify repeat sightings of wild cats by comparing natural coat markings—such as spots, rosettes and stripes—in camera-trap photographs. They build a reference catalogue, compare the same visible body regions across images and review likely matches. Software can speed up the search by ranking candidate photographs, but people still need to check the markings and decide whether the match is convincing. The method works best for species with distinctive individual patterns; it is not equally suitable for every wild cat.

How photo-based identification works

A camera trap is a digital camera triggered by a sensor when an animal passes. The resulting photographs can document a cat’s visit without a person being present, but a photograph identifies an individual only when it shows enough detail for comparison.

  1. Collect images. Researchers gather photographs from camera traps across a study area. A 2023 jaguar study used images from the Eastern Amazon. Wiig et al. (2023)
  2. Select images that can be assessed. The cat’s coat must be visible clearly enough, and the view must show a body region that can be compared consistently. Blurred, obstructed or poorly angled photographs may not support a reliable identification.
  3. Compare natural markings. Researchers look for matching arrangements of spots, rosettes, stripes or other visible features. In the cited jaguar study, the reported set of individuals was identified using left-side images.
  4. Search for candidate matches. In the HotSpotter workflow described in that study, a user selects a region of interest in an image, searches it against an image database and inspects highly ranked candidate pairs.
  5. Review and record the decision. A reviewer checks whether the proposed match is supported by the visible markings. Images that are unclear, uncertain or unmatched should remain recorded that way rather than being assigned an identity by force.

Keeping a catalogue of reference photographs makes later comparisons possible. Multiple images of an individual, including images of varying quality, can give reviewers more material to compare; image quality nonetheless affects whether a match can be made.

Which wild cats can be identified this way?

Photo identification is most useful when individuals of a species have conspicuous coat patterns that can be distinguished in photographs. A review of large-felid field methods describes extensive camera-trap use for leopards, snow leopards, jaguars, tigers and cheetahs. It notes that cats without readily identifiable coat patterns, such as lions, are commonly studied using direct photographic surveys and genetic sampling instead. These are broad methods, not guarantees: the population, camera views and image quality all matter. Review of large-felid identification methods

What pattern-matching software can—and cannot—do

Tools such as HotSpotter and Wild-ID help search collections of photographs by ranking or retrieving possible matches. They can reduce the time spent locating candidate images, but their output is not the same as a confirmed identification. A 2020 study comparing the two programs on jaguar and ocelot photographs concluded that human involvement was still needed to confirm matches. Nipko, Holcombe and Kelly (2020)

Results in that comparison varied with the program, image quality and study dataset. HotSpotter’s correct top-ranked match rate was reported as 71–82%, compared with 58–73% for Wild-ID. Positive matching rates were 85–99% for high-quality images and 28–52% for low-quality images. The reported false-match rates were 0–2% for HotSpotter and 6–28% for Wild-ID. These are results from that study’s datasets and definitions, not accuracy guarantees for other species, sites or image collections.

Why researchers check matches instead of accepting rankings

Coat patterns can look different across photographs because the animal may be turned, partly hidden or captured at a different distance or image quality. A ranking tool can point to a plausible candidate without proving that two photographs show the same cat. In Wiig et al.’s 2023 jaguar work, HotSpotter misclassified one of 18 individuals in a prior manual-identification comparison—an example of why proposed matches need review. Wiig et al. (2023)

  • Long-Lasting Power Options: Powered by 8×AA 1.5V batteries (not included). For extended outdoor use, the E6 also supports the GardePro SP350 Solar Panel (sold separately), providing continuous, maintenance-free power even in remote locations.

When evaluating a workflow, researchers need to consider whether the tool supports the species and image type, how well it performs on local photographs, how it handles false and missed matches, whether reviewers can inspect the markings behind a suggestion, and the effort required to build and maintain the reference catalogue. The cited studies do not establish one best tool for every project.

What published identification rates mean

Study figures describe particular samples and procedures; they should not be generalized into a promise that a given share of all camera-trap photographs will identify an individual. In the 2023 jaguar study, researchers analyzed 217 images, identified individuals from 131 of them (60.8%) and reported 25 individuals from left-side images. The proportion reflects that study’s photographs and identification process, not a universal success rate for jaguars or other cats. Wiig et al. (2023)
