Smart litter monitoring can make changes in a cat’s bathroom habits and weight easier to spot, giving you useful information to discuss with a veterinarian. It cannot diagnose illness or replace veterinary care, and it should never delay a call when your cat is having trouble urinating.
What smart litter monitoring can—and cannot—tell you
Depending on the system, a monitor may record litter-box visits, urination frequency or duration, and weight. By making patterns more visible over time, it can help you notice a change that might otherwise be easy to miss. Purina describes its Petivity system as an under-box monitor that tracks weight and litter-box habits and sends app alerts about meaningful changes; the manufacturer says it works with most litter boxes and litters. Purina’s product information also says the system is not intended to diagnose, treat, mitigate, or cure disease.

A reading or alert is an observation, not a diagnosis. Changes can have medical or environmental causes, and only a veterinarian can assess what is happening. A monitor can help you describe a pattern, but it has not been established that buying or using one improves health outcomes.
What a study says about litter-box patterns and kidney disease
A retrospective study published in Animals on April 25, 2026, examined elimination-behavior data from a smart litter-box monitor in cats with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and cats reported to have no known conditions. The CKD group showed more frequent urination, longer elimination durations, and less covering after elimination. The model reported a weighted F1 score of 92.7% in training cross-validation and 89.9% in validation. Those figures describe the model’s performance on the study’s dataset; they are not the chance that a consumer monitor will correctly identify disease in any cat, nor a clinical test result for an individual pet. - The Petivity Smart Litterbox Monitor System transforms data about your cat’s weight and litterbox activity into meaningful insights about their well-being.
- Identifies changes that may indicate a health condition requiring veterinary diagnoses like urinary tract infection, kidney disease, diabetes, hyperthyroidism and obesity.
- Tracks essential data in the FREE Petivity app and alerts you when changes may require a vet visit.
- Uses AI technology to develop a unique profile for each cat in the home.
- The Petivity Smart Litterbox Monitor delivers convenient email reports, personalized insights, and cat health tips.
Several authors were affiliated with Nestlé Purina Research, and the device platform is described in Purina materials. That commercial context is relevant when weighing the findings, though it does not by itself invalidate them. The study does not establish that every smart litter device can detect CKD or that monitoring changes a cat’s health outcome.
Which changes deserve a call to the veterinarian?
Changes in litter-box behavior can be a reason to seek veterinary advice, especially if they are new, persistent, or accompanied by other signs. Cornell lists these lower urinary tract signs:

- Urinating more often or making repeated trips to the box.
- Straining or appearing to have painful or difficult urination.
- Crying out while urinating or finding blood in the urine.
- Urinating outside the box or frequently licking the genital area.
Do not wait for an app notification if your cat is straining and passing little or no urine, or is becoming increasingly distressed. A urethral obstruction can be life-threatening. Cornell calls it “an absolute emergency, requiring immediate veterinary treatment.” Contact an emergency veterinarian immediately. Cornell’s guide to feline lower urinary tract disease describes the signs and urgency.
Consider health and litter-box conditions together
More frequent urination or house-soiling does not point to one cause on its own. Cornell notes that kidney disease, thyroid disease, and diabetes can increase thirst and urination, while some cats avoid a box because of an aversion to the box or its surroundings. Medical and behavioral explanations can overlap, so a veterinarian can help determine what to investigate rather than relying on a device reading alone. See Cornell’s guidance on house-soiling.

Monitoring is only one part of care. Keep the elimination area clean, safe, and suitable for your cat; litter-box management remains important even when a device is collecting data. The AAFP and ISFM guidelines for diagnosing and solving house-soiling behavior address medical causes as well as the litter box and its management.

- 😻【Large Top Opening Design & Low Entry】This open automatic litter box offers an unobstructed view and a non-confining feel, effectively reducing the likelihood of your cat resisting its use; the low entry design allows kittens, overweight cats, and senior cats with joint issues to enter and exit with ease. Compared to spherical litter boxes, the open design is much more cat-friendly (especially for shy cats reluctant to use automatic litter boxes).
- 😸【App Control & Advanced Safety Features】Connect to the open litter box via a mobile app to easily schedule automatic cleaning times, monitor your cat’s bathroom habits, and receive real-time notifications. Built-in safety sensors and anti-pinch design protect your cat during every automatic cleaning cycle, giving you peace of mind. Ideal for office workers, students, seniors, travelers, and outdoor enthusiasts.
- 🐱【Space-Saving Design & 9L Capacity】This automatic litter box measures 19.7 x 16.7 x 21.3 inches (maximum height of the machine when in operation: 23.7 inches), requiring very little space to operate; the usable area for cats is 12 x 16 inches, and it is recommended for cats weighing 3.3–18 pounds. (Please confirm the dimensions are suitable before purchasing; this product is not recommended for large cats.) The 9L capacity of the trash can is sufficient for 5–7 days in a single-cat household and 3–4 days in a multi-cat household; waste bags are included for easy waste collection.
- 😼【Easy to Use, Easy to Clean】It takes just 10 minutes from unboxing to setup (instructions included); parts can be disassembled and washed after use.
- 😽【One-year Warranty & Prompt Response】Comes with our comprehensive one-year “Care” warranty; you can also purchase an extended warranty plan. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us at any time—we offer 24/7 support and are always here to assist you.
- Data captured: Does it record visit frequency, duration, weight, or other events? Which changes does it surface?
- Multi-cat use: How does it distinguish individual cats, and what happens if it cannot confidently identify the cat?
- Fit: Does it work with your existing box and litter? Confirm compatibility with the manufacturer, since product details can change.
- Evidence behind claims: Separate manufacturer-described features and possible health associations from findings tested in a published study. A study of one platform does not validate every product.
- Next steps: Know how the system presents alerts and what you will do with a change. A concerning symptom merits veterinary advice even if the monitor shows no alert.
Purina Institute describes monitoring devices as tracking schedules, frequency, waste type, and body weight, with variations that may signal a need for veterinary evaluation. That is a description of monitoring’s potential role, not evidence that a device itself improves health. Purina Institute’s April 30, 2025 session discusses their development and practical use.
