Some survive a wildfire by hiding where flames and heat cannot reach; others endure the difficult days afterward by reducing activity. Still other creatures arrive after a fire to feed or reproduce in the changed habitat. Those are different strategies—not a superpower that protects animals from direct flames.
How animals avoid the worst of a fire
For animals caught in a fire, survival often depends on avoiding exposure rather than withstanding it. A review of animal responses to fire describes refuge use, including shelter in sites that offer protection from heat. Whether a refuge works depends on its location and the fire’s intensity and behavior.
Yellow-footed antechinus hide in rocky crevices
After a severe forest fire, researchers studying yellow-footed antechinus (Antechinus flavipes) proposed that some animals likely survived in place by sheltering deep inside rocky crevices. In the landscape they studied, those crevices were the only nearby sites considered fire-proof. This is a likely explanation for survival in that setting, not proof that small mammals generally withstand fire by hiding in rocks. Matthews et al.’s 2016 study record
How echidnas cope after a fire
Surviving the flames is only part of the challenge. Food and shelter can be scarce in a burned area, and animals may need to get through the days that follow.

#1 Best Overall
- Meets U.S. Forest Service specifications
- Provides added protection from direct flame, reflects radiant heat, and traps breathable air. The outer layer is comprised of aluminum foil which reflects radiant heat and woven silica cloth which slows the passage of heat to the inside of the shelter. The outer layer of foil reflects approximately 95 percent of radiant heat.
- Shake handles allow for fast deployment while rounded ends scatter radiant heat.
- Includes a nylon carrying case and a hard plastic liner
- The shelter’s inner layer is constructed of fiberglass laminated to aluminum foil which prevents heat from being reradiated to the person inside the shelter.
Torpor conserves energy
In a study of echidnas monitored during a prescribed burn, all but one study animal survived. The echidnas remained inactive in the days after the fire and substantially lowered their body temperature during bouts of torpor. The researchers suggest that this kind of flexible body-temperature regulation, called heterothermy, can reduce energy use and help mammals outlast post-fire conditions. The study’s reported outcome applies to its monitored animals; its abstract record does not give a sample size, so it cannot be converted into a survival percentage or a general rate for echidnas. Why some beetles appear to seek out burned areas
Some fire-associated insects use the habitat after a burn rather than surviving inside active flames. The University of Saskatchewan reported that Sericoda obsoleta quickly colonized recently burned soil at study locations in Saskatchewan, where females laid eggs. The feature explains the opportunity in terms of lower competition and predation in the burned environment. This is evidence of post-fire colonization and reproduction—not evidence that the beetles can withstand flames.

Aaron Bell, a biology PhD candidate and study co-author, put the distinction simply: “Most animals can’t handle the heat of an active fire, but once the fire is out it becomes a beacon that attracts all kinds of things.” University of Saskatchewan, August 24, 2022
Attraction to fire is not the same as flame resistance
A review describes other beetles with fire-related behaviors: the Australian buprestid Merimna atrata is attracted to fire and lays eggs in fire-weakened trees, while Melanophila acuminata can orient toward smoke using infrared detection. These examples concern locating fire or using its aftermath; they do not establish immunity to heat or direct contact with flames. “First-Order Fire Effects on Animals: Review and Recommendations,” 2010

What determines whether wildlife survives a wildfire?
There is no single answer for all animals. Outcomes depend on the species, its life history, the availability of shelter, the habitat, and the fire regime. A refuge may protect one animal during the burn; inactivity may help another cope afterward; and a newly burned area may provide an opportunity for a species that arrives later.
Wildfire can kill animals as well as reshape habitat, and survival of individual animals is different from recovery of a population over time. A USGS-hosted review examines how traits can affect resistance to wildfire and population recovery, while a Natural Resources Canada explainer published in May 2026 describes how fire-associated insects and fungi contribute to processes in burned forests. Neither makes a case that animals are fireproof. USGS review, August 30, 2021; Natural Resources Canada, May 2026
