Keep your senior dog moving, but adjust the duration and difficulty to the dog in front of you. Age alone does not set an exercise limit: diagnosis, conditioning, body condition, gait, comfort, and recovery all matter. Short, controlled walks can be a good starting point, while new stiffness, limping, or reluctance to move calls for a veterinary assessment rather than a guess that it is simply old age.

How much exercise should a senior dog get?

There is no single daily exercise target for all senior dogs. A healthy, active older dog may tolerate more than a dog with osteoarthritis, another health condition, pain, or reduced strength. Aim for regular activity your dog can do comfortably, then adjust based on how the dog moves during the activity and recovers afterward.

Walking on a leash is a practical low-impact option for many dogs. Swimming may also suit some dogs, if they are comfortable in the water and can do it safely. Stop an activity that causes pain or is too difficult; do not try to build stamina by pushing through worsening mobility.

How to adjust walks and other activity

Start with short, frequent outings when needed

For a dog with osteoarthritis that is not already exercising regularly, VCA recommends frequent, short walks to reduce the time joints spend stiffening between outings. Its example is 10 minutes of walking three times a day. This is a starting example for that situation, not a universal prescription or a target for every senior dog. Follow your veterinarian’s advice for your dog’s diagnosis and overall health.

Increase gradually only if your dog stays comfortable

Keep the current activity level until your dog tolerates it without increased stiffness or other signs of discomfort. If your veterinarian agrees, increase the amount gradually—for example, week by week—only when your dog continues to recover comfortably. If mobility worsens, stop the challenging activity and contact your veterinarian; pain management or the diagnosis may need reassessment.

Choose lower-impact movement

Controlled leash walks and suitable swimming are generally more appropriate starting points for a dog with joint problems than vigorous running, repetitive jumping, or hard-surface ball chasing. Cornell advises limiting high-impact activity for dogs with arthritis. The best option still depends on the individual dog’s comfort, balance, strength, and veterinary guidance.

What to monitor during and after activity

Notice whether your dog is willing to continue, whether their gait changes, and how they recover. Check later that day and the next morning for stiffness after rest, difficulty rising, or changes in walking or stair use. This is a practical way to observe tolerance, not a validated scoring system.

If an outing brings on pain, worsening mobility, or a new symptom, stop the activity that is causing difficulty and contact your veterinarian. Do not increase exercise while your dog is struggling to return to their usual comfort and movement.

When a change in mobility needs a veterinary check

Osteoarthritis is one possible cause of reduced activity, but you cannot diagnose the reason for slowing down at home. Tell your veterinarian if you notice any of the following:

  • Stiffness or limping, including stiffness after rest.
  • Difficulty getting up, climbing stairs, or jumping.
  • Slowing down on walks or reduced interest in play.
  • Changes in weight or muscle, or a change in posture.

A veterinarian can assess gait, posture, joints, and pain. Imaging may be considered to examine joint or bone changes. The findings can help shape an activity plan and determine whether rehabilitation or pain treatment is appropriate.

Home changes and mobility aids

Home supports can make movement and access easier, but they do not treat arthritis or replace a tailored plan. Match the aid to the problem your dog is having:

Need Possible support What to consider
Getting onto furniture or into a vehicle A dog ramp, stairs, or another suitable access aid Check stability, grip, slope, size, weight capacity, placement, and whether your dog can use it comfortably.
Slipping on smooth floors Non-slip rugs or other traction support Place them where your dog turns, stands, or walks most often, and make sure they stay in place.
Needing help with mobility A lift or mobility-support harness Ask a veterinarian or rehabilitation professional about fit and safe lifting, particularly if your dog is weak or painful.

Not every older dog needs a ramp, traction aid, or harness. Choose based on your dog’s mobility, size, strength, balance, and home environment.
