Adopting a black cat is much like adopting any cat: choose the individual whose temperament and care needs fit your household, ask the shelter what it knows and what remains uncertain, and prepare a calm place for the cat to settle. A black coat does not predict whether a cat will be shy, playful, affectionate, or independent.
Will a black cat’s personality be different?
No reliable personality assessment can be made from coat color. Focus on the particular cat’s observed behavior, history, and needs. ASPCA profiles illustrate how much individual cats can differ: one may be nervous in new surroundings and need time and a confined space, another may be better suited to a quiet home, and another may need a careful introduction to resident cats. These are examples, not general rules about black cats. ASPCA’s profiles of Hematite, Paxton, and Samoa describe those individual differences.
When comparing cats, consider the evidence available about each one, not just a brief meeting. Shelter, foster, and prior-home observations may differ because cats can behave differently in different settings.
- Energy and play: Ask how much activity the cat seems to enjoy and what kinds of play have been observed.
- Interaction and handling: Find out whether the cat seeks contact, prefers space, or has particular handling needs.
- Household compatibility: Ask what is known about the cat around children, other cats, and dogs.
- Care needs: Consider whether your household can provide any ongoing medical, behavioral, or adjustment support the cat may need.
What questions should I ask before adopting a cat?
Ask for specific observations as well as the cat’s known history. A short shelter visit is only one snapshot, so ask whether staff, volunteers, foster caregivers, or a previous household have seen different behavior in other situations. ASPCA guidance recognizes that animals with some health or behavior conditions may still be suitable for adoption when the adopter can meet their needs; it also recommends drawing on multiple sources of behavioral information. ASPCA’s shelter responsibilities position statement explains this approach.

- Medical care already completed: Which vaccinations, tests, parasite treatments, spay or neuter procedures, and microchip steps have been completed? What remains due? Ask for copies of the records.
- Routine: What food and litter has the cat been using? Are there familiar items or routines that may ease the transition?
- Adoption arrangements: What are the organization’s terms, fees, and post-adoption support policies? These vary by organization, so confirm them directly.
How should I prepare before bringing the cat home?
Set up a quiet starter space
Choose a designated area where the cat can retreat while getting used to the new home. Prepare food and water, a litter box, a bed or other soft resting place, a scratching surface, and toys. Keep the first environment manageable rather than expecting the cat to explore the whole home immediately.
Have a secure carrier ready
Arrange safe transport before pickup and keep a secure carrier available for veterinary visits. AAHA includes carrier preparation in its kitten health guide and checklist, and VCA lists a carrier among the supplies for a newly adopted pet. Bring a familiar routine into the transition where practical, including the cat’s current food.

Plan veterinary follow-up and costs
Request the adoption and medical records, then share them with your veterinarian. The records can help the veterinarian determine which vaccines, tests, and parasite prevention may still be needed. The right plan depends on the cat’s age, history, and clinical assessment; confirm health decisions with your veterinarian. VCA advises arranging a check before the pet comes home or fairly soon afterward if a pre-adoption exam is not possible. VCA’s shelter adoption guidance covers follow-up and preparation.
Before committing, account for recurring expenses such as food, litter, and routine veterinary care, as well as the possibility of unexpected medical visits. If you have other pets, ask the shelter how to introduce them. Make introductions gradually and seek professional guidance if either animal shows persistent stress.

What should I expect when I bring an adopted cat home?
A move can be stressful. Your new cat may hide or take time to feel comfortable, even if the cat seemed relaxed during a shelter or foster visit. Provide a quiet retreat, keep routines predictable, and let the cat initiate contact rather than forcing cuddles. Some cats need more time and a controlled space to settle.
Ask the shelter what has helped this particular cat feel secure. If health or behavior concerns arise, contact the shelter or a veterinarian. ASPCA’s individual cat profiles and VCA’s adoption guidance offer examples and advice for the transition; the best approach depends on the cat in front of you.
