How to Adopt a Dog: Questions to Ask and What to Prepare

Choose a dog with your household and routine in mind, ask for known history and medical records, prepare a safe resting place, and plan a calm transition and veterinary visit.

Before adopting a dog, make sure the dog’s needs fit your household and daily routine, ask the shelter or rescue what is known—and what is not—and prepare a calm, safe place at home. Ask for available veterinary records, give the dog time to adjust, and arrange a veterinary examination soon after adoption.

How to decide whether a dog is a good fit

Think beyond whether you feel an immediate connection. A dog needs daily care, exercise, companionship, and health care over the long term. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) recommends considering how a dog fits your family, home, and lifestyle. AVMA guidance on selecting a dog

Before you meet dogs, consider the practical details that will shape everyday life:

  • Time and routine: Who will handle feeding, walks, play, grooming, training, and bathroom breaks? Who will care for the dog when household members are away?
  • Home and household: Check rental, building, and local rules. Consider children, other pets, visitors, and whether you can give a new dog a quiet place to settle.
  • Care needs: Think about likely exercise, grooming, training, and health needs. A broad breed label cannot tell you everything about an individual dog.
  • Long-term changes: Consider whether a move, schedule change, or other foreseeable shift could affect your ability to keep and care for the dog.
  • Resources and support: Plan for routine and emergency veterinary care, food, grooming, boarding, licensing, identification, training, and supplies. Costs vary by dog and location.

Puppies often need more time for housetraining, socialization, training, feeding, and supervision. An adult dog may have household experience or basic training, but that is individual: ask what is actually known rather than assuming based on age.

What to ask the shelter or rescue

Use these questions to start a conversation, not as a pass-or-fail test. Shelters and rescues differ in what they know about a dog, and a complete history may not be available. Ask the organization to distinguish documented facts, caregiver observations, estimates, and unknowns.

Background and daily behavior

  • What is known about the dog’s background and why they came into care?
  • How long have they been at the shelter or in foster care?
  • What have staff or foster caregivers observed about the dog’s routine, energy, and comfort with handling?
  • What is known about housetraining, being alone, walking on leash, and responses to ordinary household experiences?
  • What behavior has been observed in a kennel, foster home, or other setting—and what might differ in a new home?

Ask for specific examples where possible. A description of one observed behavior can help you plan, but it is not a guarantee of how the dog will act in a different setting. The ASPCA advises shelters to gather information to understand a dog’s behavioral profile. It also reports that studies found food aggression during an assessment did not predict behavior in the adoptive home; that limited finding should not be treated as proof that every behavior or risk can be predicted. Health care and paperwork

  • What veterinary care has the dog received? Which vaccinations, parasite treatments, or other treatments are documented?
  • Can I have copies of the available medical records?
  • Is the dog spayed or neutered? If not, is there a follow-up plan or obligation, and what are the details?
  • Are there known health needs or recommended follow-up with a veterinarian?
  • What does the adoption fee include, what paperwork will I receive, and whom should I contact with questions after adoption?

Ask about records even if the dog’s earlier history is incomplete. The American Kennel Club’s shelter-dog guidance also recommends asking about a dog’s source, time in care, veterinary care, and health records. AKC questions to ask about a shelter dog

Compatibility with people and other animals

  • What is known about the dog’s interactions with children, other dogs, cats, or other animals?
  • How and where were those observations made?
  • What remains unknown, and does the organization recommend a gradual introduction or other support?
  • Are there behavior needs the organization has identified, or resources it recommends after adoption?

If the organization has limited information about a particular interaction, treat that as an unknown—not as evidence that the dog is either safe or unsafe in every situation. Discuss introductions and supervision with the organization and, when appropriate, your veterinarian or a qualified behavior professional.

What to prepare before bringing the dog home

Set up a calm resting place and an eating area before arrival. Confirm with the organization what food or supplies come with the dog and ask about the dog’s current routine so you can plan the transition.

Basic supplies

  • Food and water bowls
  • A collar, leash, and ID tag; check the fit and keep identification information current
  • A bed or other safe resting place
  • Toys and treats suited to the individual dog
  • A safety gate if limiting access to parts of the home would help the dog settle

A crate may suit some dogs and households, but it is not essential for every adoption. Ask the organization what the dog is accustomed to and choose equipment for the dog’s size and needs. ASPCA adoption guidance recommends preparing a dedicated space and notes that gates can help limit access while a new pet adjusts. ASPCA adoption tips and ASPCA tips for adopting a dog

How to handle the first days

A new home can be overwhelming. Keep the routine calm and predictable, and give the dog time and space to observe the home and the people and animals in it. Do not force interaction or expect the dog to settle on a fixed timeline. ASPCA adoption guidance recommends patience, routine, and calm direction while a pet adjusts. ASPCA adoption tips

Follow the organization’s advice about introductions, handling, and the dog’s familiar routine. Let the dog approach at their own pace, and supervise interactions with household members and other pets as appropriate.

When to arrange veterinary care

Schedule a veterinary examination as soon as possible after bringing the dog home, and take any available vaccination and deworming information or other medical records to the appointment. The veterinarian can advise on immunization, parasite control, nutrition, sterilization, socialization, training, grooming, and other needs for this dog. AVMA preparation guidance and ASPCA adoption tips

Use the visit to review documented care and clarify what follow-up is recommended. If records are incomplete, tell the veterinarian what the organization could confirm and what remains unknown.
