If your puppy snaps, mouths, or struggles during a bath, pause rather than trying to hold them still. Fear or pain can trigger defensive biting, so the safer approach is to build comfort in small, rewarded steps and stop when your puppy shows they cannot cope.
Why puppies bite or scratch during baths
A bath can feel frightening or uncomfortable: the surface may be slippery, water or handling may be unfamiliar, or the puppy may be sore. Biting during grooming can be a response to fear or pain, not simply misbehavior. VCA notes that struggling, turning away, mouthing, attempted bites, and refusing treats can signal discomfort. Treat these as cues to pause or make the task easier, not as a reason to force the bath.
Prepare a safe, calm bathing area
- Choose a manageable space. Use a sink, tub, or shower stall suited to your puppy’s size, where you can control the water and handle them without awkward reaching. Compare setups by secure footing, water control, and whether your puppy can enter without being lifted or forced.
- Set up before bringing your puppy in. Have towels, dog-formulated puppy shampoo, and small rewards within reach so you do not need to leave a wet puppy unattended.
- Provide steady footing. Place a nonslip bath mat in the bathing area. It can help your puppy feel more secure, though it is not a bite-prevention device.
- Check the water. Use comfortably warm water and test it with your hand or elbow. If bathing outdoors, VCA advises choosing warm weather and checking the hose water before using it.
- Use appropriate shampoo. Choose shampoo formulated for dogs and suitable for puppies. Do not use human or baby shampoo on a dog. If your puppy has a skin condition, a recent incision, or needs medicated or unusually frequent bathing, ask your veterinarian which product and routine to use.
Get your puppy comfortable before adding water
If your puppy is already uneasy, do not begin by putting them straight into a full bath. Let them approach or enter the dry bathing area, then reward calm exploration. When that feels easy, introduce a small amount of water and reward again. Keep sessions short; if your puppy shows stress, stop or return to a simpler step. Never punish fear.
Use small, puppy-appropriate training treats or another reward your puppy values. A sticky food reward placed on a suitable suctioned surface can provide an optional distraction; a suction-cup lick mat is one possible format, not a required tool or a guarantee against bites.

Bathe your puppy in gentle, manageable steps
- Settle your puppy on the nonslip surface. Give them a moment to adjust and reward calm behavior before turning on water.
- Introduce water gradually. Use a gentle flow and wet the coat slowly. Keep water away from the ears.
- Apply puppy-appropriate dog shampoo. Lather gently, avoiding rough handling or sudden movements.
- Rinse thoroughly. Remove the suds while keeping the water comfortable and away from the ears.
- Reward cooperation throughout. Reinforce calm participation in small moments rather than waiting until the bath is over.
- Watch your puppy’s response. Pause if they struggle to escape, cower, turn away, whine, move away, mouth or attempt to bite, or stop taking treats. Do not keep advancing while they are frightened.
When to stop the bath
End the attempt if your puppy is frightened, appears to be in pain, or cannot be handled safely. A bite or scratch is possible when a puppy feels threatened, and forcing the process can make the experience less safe. If your puppy is only mildly worried, give them space and try again another time with an easier step, such as calmly entering the dry area.

Contact your veterinarian about persistent or severe fear, a sudden behavior change, apparent pain, or a skin problem. The American Veterinary Medical Association also advises consulting a veterinarian when fear or aggression seems excessive or unprovoked. If home bathing is not manageable, a fear-aware groomer may be an option; ask how they handle frightened puppies and do not treat grooming as a substitute for veterinary assessment of pain or illness.
How often should you bathe a puppy?
There is no single schedule that fits every puppy. VCA says healthy dogs generally should not be bathed more than once a month to preserve natural oils, but frequency depends on age, lifestyle, coat, and health; swimming or veterinary treatment can change the routine. Ask your veterinarian for guidance if your puppy has medical needs or requires frequent bathing.
