For a defined opening or area, a securely fitted wildlife-safe net or screen is the clearest physical exclusion option. Use perch controls only for a particular fixture, and inspect any deterrent regularly: cockatoos can adapt, and no method is guaranteed to work permanently.
Start by removing what attracts cockatoos
Clear food scraps promptly, avoid feeding birds, and look for nearby food sources that may be drawing them to the balcony. Victorian government guidance notes that cockatoos may damage timber fittings and furniture where people feed them; Sutherland Shire Council also notes that cockatoos scavenge food scraps. Addressing food does not block access by itself, but it can reduce the reason birds return. Victorian guidance on cockatoo management; Sutherland Shire Council advice.
Choose a method based on where the damage happens
| Method | Best suited to | Limits and considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Wildlife-safe netting or protective screen | Blocking access through a defined balcony opening or around an attractive area. | Recommended in government guidance as physical exclusion. Edges need to be securely fitted and checked for holes, looseness, and entanglement risks. The cited sources do not specify a universal balcony mesh size or installation standard. |
| Shade cloth | Protecting selected timber surfaces or openings. | Named in Victorian advice for protecting timber, but not established as a complete barrier for every balcony. |
| Rolling perch or spike clusters | Discouraging birds from using a specific fixture as a perch. | Perch-specific controls do not exclude birds from an open balcony. |
| Remove food attractants | Balconies where scraps or feeding appear to draw birds. | Reduces a reason to visit, but does not physically prevent access. |
| Noise or visual deterrents | Situations where a non-structural measure can be used without disturbing neighbors. | Birds may adapt; loud noises can be a nuisance in built-up areas. Do not rely on a lasting effect. |
These options are listed in government guidance, but the cited sources do not provide controlled comparisons of retail products or balcony success rates. See the Victorian management methods and the Western Australian pest-parrot guidance for their respective scopes.
Fit a wildlife-safe net or screen for an area-access problem
If cockatoos are entering the balcony or reaching plants and other items across a broad area, an exclusion barrier is a better match than a device aimed at one perch. Victorian and Sutherland Shire guidance recommend wildlife-safe netting; Victorian advice also identifies protective screens and shade cloth among measures to limit damage.

- Map the area to protect. Identify the opening or section birds use and where they land or reach through. Choose a barrier that can cover that area rather than leaving an obvious route around it.
- Select material described as wildlife-safe. The cited guidance recommends wildlife-safe netting but does not set a universal mesh aperture or balcony standard. Do not assume any net sold for gardening or general use is safe for wildlife.
- Plan a secure fit before fastening. Check whether the barrier can be attached without gaps or loose edges. Before altering or attaching anything to the building, check applicable landlord, strata, body corporate, or building requirements; rules vary and the cited guidance does not establish a universal permission rule.
- Inspect it routinely. Look for loosened edges, holes, sagging, or places where a bird could become entangled. Repair or remove damaged material promptly.
The Western Australian Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development describes netting as a physical exclusion barrier in its 2025 pest-bird guidance and notes installation cost and ongoing maintenance. That guidance covers pest-bird management broadly, not a tested balcony product or a specific balcony installation.
Use perch controls only for a particular fixture
If the problem is a cockatoo repeatedly perching on one rail, ledge, or fixture, Victorian guidance lists rolling perches and spike clusters as targeted options. They address use of that perch, not access to the balcony as a whole. For damage to a particular wooden surface, the same guidance mentions protective measures including shade cloth and wire; it does not establish chicken wire as a complete balcony barrier.

Monitor the result and adjust
Check whether the birds are still visiting, whether the barrier continues to cover the route they use, and whether it remains secure and wildlife-safe. If activity persists, reassess both the attractants and the coverage rather than assuming a deterrent will work indefinitely. Victorian guidance warns that cockatoos are highly intelligent and that measures may fail or lose effectiveness; it recommends planning, varying methods, and monitoring.

Legal protections depend on location. In Victoria, the government states: “All Victorian native wildlife is protected under the Wildlife Act 1975, and it is illegal to harass or harm native birds and other wildlife without authorisation.” The Victorian guidance also says wilful disturbance or destruction without approval is illegal. Sutherland Shire Council says sulphur-crested cockatoos are protected in NSW under the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016. These are local examples, not rules for every jurisdiction; check with your own wildlife authority before taking action. Focus on exclusion and other non-lethal measures, and do not poison, trap, harm, or deliberately disturb birds. Victorian Government wildlife guidance; Sutherland Shire Council advice.
