How to Brush Your Cat’s Teeth and Build a Routine

A practical, low-stress guide to introducing tooth brushing, choosing supplies, cleaning the gumline, setting a schedule, and recognizing when dental disease needs veterinary care.

The most reliable way to care for a cat’s teeth at home is to brush the outer tooth surfaces at the gumline with toothpaste made for cats. Start with seconds of calm handling, reward cooperation, and add teeth only as your cat accepts each step. Work toward daily brushing; if that is not realistic, brushing several times a week still helps.

Never use human toothpaste, force the mouth open, or continue when handling appears painful. Home brushing removes plaque from accessible surfaces, but it does not replace veterinary examinations, professional cleaning, or treatment below the gumline.

Why brushing your cat’s teeth matters

Plaque is a bacterial film that forms on teeth after eating. If it remains, it can harden into tartar and contribute to gum inflammation and periodontal disease. VCA Animal Hospitals reports that roughly 50% to 80% of cats over age four have periodontal disease (VCA, 2023: Brushing Your Cat’s Teeth).

Daily plaque removal is useful because plaque returns quickly. Cornell veterinary dental staff state that plaque can build up within 12 hours of cleaning and recommend brushing at least once daily for about 60 seconds as the most effective home method for reducing mouth bacteria (Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, 2018: Veterinary tips for pet dental care).

Brushing cannot remove tartar that is already firmly attached, diagnose painful teeth, or clean hidden areas beneath the gums. A cat that has established dental disease may need a veterinary examination and treatment before home care is comfortable or safe.

Gather cat-safe supplies

Prepare the equipment before beginning so each session stays brief and predictable. Use products intended for cats; their toothpaste is formulated to be swallowed in small amounts, while human toothpaste is not safe for cats.

Supply How it is used What to consider
Small, soft cat toothbrush Brushes the outer tooth surfaces and gumline. A small head and soft bristles make it easier to reach cheek teeth without scraping the gums. This is the preferred tool when your cat accepts it.
Cat toothpaste Provides a cat-safe formulation and can make the brush more acceptable. Let your cat taste a tiny amount first. Never substitute human toothpaste.
Finger toothbrush Fits over a finger for gentle contact with teeth. Some cats tolerate the format, but a finger brush is not automatically as effective as an appropriate small brush for removing plaque.
Gauze or cotton swab Can introduce tooth and gum handling during early practice. These are handling aids, not a reason to skip progressing to a suitable brush when possible.
Very soft baby toothbrush An alternative when a pet brush is unavailable or poorly tolerated. Choose a genuinely soft, small brush and stop if the cat resists or the gums appear uncomfortable.
Small rewards Reinforce calm behavior after each step. Use a reward your veterinarian considers appropriate for your cat’s diet and health.

Keep the brush, toothpaste, and reward together in the place where you plan to practice. A consistent setup reduces the number of unfamiliar events your cat must process at once.

Check your cat’s mouth before training

Look at the mouth without forcing it open. Healthy training starts with a cat that can be touched comfortably. Gently stroke the cheeks and muzzle, and notice whether your cat pulls away, cries, drools, or reacts as if a tooth or gum is painful.

Arrange a veterinary examination before brushing if you see markedly inflamed gums, persistent bad breath, drooling, reluctance to eat, refusal to eat, or an unusual habit of turning the head while eating. Cornell lists these signs among possible indications of gingivitis and other oral illness (see Feline Dental Disease). Bad breath can have causes beyond routine plaque, so it should not be treated only as a brushing or product problem.

Cornell specifically advises consulting a veterinarian before brushing when a cat has severe gingivitis because contact can hurt. Do not try to solve suspected disease by brushing harder or by restraining the cat more tightly.

A gradual four-stage acclimation plan

Cornell presents a four-week example that moves from toothpaste exposure to brushing. Four weeks is a framework, not a deadline: an individual cat may accept a step in a few days or need several weeks. Advance only when your cat remains relaxed at the current stage.

Stage 1: Make the place and supplies ordinary

Choose a quiet time when your cat is neither hungry nor highly playful, and use the same chair, mat, or room for each attempt. Put the closed toothpaste and brush nearby. Let your cat sniff them, then reward calm investigation. If your cat is interested, offer a very small taste of feline toothpaste from your fingertip or the brush. Do not smear paste into the mouth or chase the cat with the supplies.

Repeat this exposure daily. End while your cat is still calm, even if that means the first session lasts only a few seconds. The objective is to make the sight and smell of the kit predict a reward rather than restraint.

Stage 2: Practice gentle lip handling

When your cat willingly remains near the setup, stroke the cheek and muzzle as you would during ordinary petting. Briefly lift the lip to reveal the teeth, then release it and reward. Keep the mouth closed; you do not need to pry the jaws apart to reach the surfaces that collect the most plaque.

Increase the time of lip lifting gradually. If your cat turns away, freezes, swats, or tries to escape, lower the difficulty at the next session. A calm, one-second lift is more useful than a long struggle.

Stage 3: Add finger contact and a canine tooth

Once lip lifting is routine, touch a canine tooth with a clean finger for a moment and reward. Cornell’s progression then introduces a small amount of cat toothpaste on a canine tooth. Keep the contact gentle and brief. This step teaches your cat that a sensation on the tooth does not predict pain.

Do not open the mouth forcefully. Stretch the lips back just enough to see the tooth, and stop immediately if the cat acts uncomfortable.

Stage 4: Introduce the brush and expand slowly

Let your cat lick a tiny amount of cat toothpaste from the brush if that improves acceptance. Touch the brush to one or two teeth, reward, and finish. Over subsequent sessions, add a few teeth at a time. Begin with the large canine teeth and cheek teeth, which provide useful early targets and are easier to see when the lip is lifted.

Only after your cat accepts several teeth should you work around more of the mouth. A four-week plan does not require completing every tooth on every day; its purpose is to create a cooperative habit without turning practice into a fight.

How to brush each session

Use a closed-mouth technique. Most of the plaque you need to disturb is on the outer surfaces facing the cheeks and lips, especially where those surfaces meet the gums.

  1. Choose the cue. Sit in the familiar place at a dependable time, such as after your own evening tooth-brushing, when your cat is settled.
  2. Prepare a tiny amount of paste. Put cat toothpaste on the bristles. A small amount is sufficient; your cat should not receive a large quantity.
  3. Position without force. Let the cat stand or sit comfortably. Gently lift the lip while keeping the mouth closed.
  4. Start with easy teeth. Place the soft bristles at the gumline of a canine or large cheek tooth. Use small, gentle strokes rather than pressing down.
  5. Follow the outer surfaces. Move along the teeth that face the cheek and lip. The tongue helps clean many inner surfaces, so early sessions should not become a struggle to reach the inside of every tooth.
  6. Work in short sections. If your cat is new to brushing, clean only a few teeth, praise, and stop. Add another section on a later day.
  7. Finish predictably. Remove the brush, offer the planned reward, and put the supplies away. Ending calmly helps your cat accept the next cue.

Do not clamp the jaw open, pin the head down, or continue through obvious distress. Restraint can turn a manageable training problem into fear and can conceal pain that needs veterinary attention.

How often and how long to brush

Daily brushing is the preferred goal because plaque returns rapidly. The American Veterinary Medical Association says daily brushing is best and that brushing several times a week can still be effective (AVMA, Pet dental care, accessed October 13, 2026). VCA describes daily brushing as most beneficial and gives three times weekly as a minimum recommendation to help remove plaque and limit tartar accumulation.

Cornell’s approximately 60-second figure refers to the total brushing time recommended by its veterinary dental staff. VCA separately suggests about 30 seconds per side. These are practical targets for a cat that already accepts brushing, not requirements for the first training sessions. Start with the amount your cat can tolerate and build toward more complete coverage.

If you miss a day, resume at the next calm opportunity rather than doubling the duration. A short, repeatable session several times a week is more realistic than an occasional long session that causes fear. Record the days you brush for the first few weeks; a simple calendar mark can reveal whether your chosen cue is actually dependable.

Make the routine easier to maintain

Attach brushing to an existing habit

Choose an event that already occurs at roughly the same time, such as settling down for the evening or brushing your own teeth. Bring your cat to the practice area only after the supplies are ready. Consistency matters more than the particular hour of the day.

Reward cooperation, not perfection

Give the reward for calm behavior at the level you asked for: approaching the kit, allowing a lip lift, accepting the brush, or completing a few strokes. This lets you reinforce progress even when a full-mouth session is not possible.

Keep the brush clean and available

Rinse the brush after use and store it where it can dry. Replace it when the bristles become worn or splayed. Keep toothpaste capped and separate from household human toothpaste so the wrong product is not picked up accidentally.

Let the routine grow with the cat’s tolerance

A cat that accepts the left side may still object to the right side or to cheek teeth. Treat each side and region as a separate skill. Return to an easier tooth whenever your cat becomes tense, then try a slightly harder location another day.

Troubleshoot common setbacks

My cat licks the toothpaste but rejects the brush

Use the taste as a reward, not as the whole dental procedure. Return to touching the paste-coated bristles to one canine for a second, then end. Gradually increase contact. Licking toothpaste alone does not provide the same plaque removal as brushing.

My cat bites the brush

Pause movement and let the cat investigate. Resume with the brush positioned on an outer tooth rather than directly in front of the mouth. Use a smaller, softer head if the current brush is bulky. Do not pull against a biting cat or force the brush deeper into the mouth.

My cat will not stay still

Shorten the session and practice at a calmer time. You can complete one side on one day and the other side later while building tolerance. If handling cannot be done safely, ask your veterinarian about other dental-care options instead of escalating restraint.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

My cat suddenly resists after previously cooperating

Assume discomfort until a veterinarian rules it out. New resistance, drooling, bad breath, hesitation to eat, or turning the head while eating can accompany oral disease. Stop brushing and arrange an examination rather than trying a stronger hold.

I can see tartar already

Home brushing can slow new plaque accumulation but will not substitute for professional removal of established tartar. A veterinarian can assess the gums and teeth and determine whether a dental procedure is needed.

What can supplement brushing?

Dental diets, treats, and oral rinses may be useful for some cats, but they are not automatically interchangeable with brushing. Their suitability depends on the cat’s age, medical conditions, diet, and ability to chew safely. Ask a veterinarian before adding one, particularly if your cat has kidney disease, food allergies, obesity, or painful teeth.

The AVMA recommends discussing dental products and diets with a veterinarian. VCA directs owners to the Veterinary Oral Health Council’s list of accepted products. Acceptance on such a list concerns the product’s evaluated dental claim; it does not mean every product suits every cat or that a treat removes plaque as thoroughly as brushing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a cat that cannot safely tolerate a brush, a veterinarian can help weigh these options against the cat’s oral findings. Do not present a treat, rinse, or food as a guaranteed replacement for mechanical cleaning.

Why veterinary dental care is still necessary

Brushing reaches visible outer surfaces, while disease can develop beneath the gumline or around teeth that are difficult to see. Veterinary dental examinations identify problems that home handling cannot confirm. The AVMA notes that professional cleaning and dental radiographs may require anesthesia so the veterinarian can examine and treat the mouth safely and thoroughly.

Schedule routine veterinary examinations even when brushing is going well. Ask what examination interval fits your cat’s age, history, and previous dental findings. A professional plan may include cleaning, treatment of diseased teeth, pain control, and a home-care routine to maintain the result.

When to stop immediately and call the veterinarian

  • Gums look severely inflamed or the cat reacts as though brushing hurts.
  • Your cat drools, refuses food, hesitates before eating, or turns the head unusually while chewing.
  • Bad breath persists or becomes noticeably worse.
  • Resistance appears suddenly after a period of comfortable brushing.
  • You cannot handle the mouth without risking a bite or causing panic.

These signs call for assessment, not a longer brushing session. Once painful disease is addressed, the veterinarian can advise when and how to restart gradual home care.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build a routine that lasts

Start with the smallest step your cat can repeat calmly, use a cat-specific toothpaste and soft brush, and connect the attempt to a dependable daily cue. Lift the lip rather than opening the mouth, concentrate on the outer gumline, and expand from canines and cheek teeth only as tolerance improves. Aim for daily brushing; if that cannot be maintained, schedule several short sessions each week and keep veterinary dental examinations in the plan.

The goal is not to win a single full-mouth battle. It is to make gentle plaque removal a predictable, low-stress part of your cat’s care while getting professional help whenever the mouth appears painful or diseased.
