Brush the outer tooth surfaces gently, aiming to work up to a daily routine. Never force the mouth open or continue if your dog is distressed.
What you need to brush your dog’s teeth
- Pet toothpaste: Choose toothpaste formulated for dogs. Dogs swallow toothpaste, while human toothpaste is not intended to be swallowed. Some human formulas contain xylitol, which is toxic to dogs, so do not use human toothpaste. Do not use baking soda as a substitute.
- A gentle cleaning tool: Use a soft dog toothbrush, a finger toothbrush, or a small, soft baby toothbrush. A clean soft cloth or gauze can help your dog get used to having the teeth touched before you introduce a brush. Choose based on your dog’s mouth size and tolerance, as well as what you can handle comfortably; there is no basis here for claiming one style cleans better than another.
- Rewards: Praise and small rewards help make short practice sessions positive.
How to introduce brushing gradually
Pick a calm time and move forward only while your dog remains comfortable. The goal is to build tolerance over several short sessions, not to complete a full brushing on the first try.
- Practice muzzle handling. Briefly touch your dog’s muzzle, then reward and stop.
- Lift the lip briefly. When your dog accepts muzzle contact, lift a lip for a moment so the teeth are visible. Keep the mouth relaxed; do not pry it open.
- Introduce finger contact. Rub a finger gently along the gums for a short time, then reward your dog.
- Let your dog taste pet toothpaste. Put a small amount on your finger and allow your dog to sniff and taste it.
- Try cloth or gauze. When finger contact is comfortable, wrap a soft cloth or gauze around your finger and gently rub a few teeth with a little pet toothpaste.
- Move to a soft toothbrush. Introduce the brush gradually, rewarding calm behavior. Stop and return to an easier step if your dog becomes uncomfortable.
VCA’s brushing guidance and tooth-brushing preparation advice recommend gradual introduction and gentle handling.
How to brush once your dog is comfortable
- Place the brush at about a 45-degree angle to the gum line.
- Use gentle, small circular motions on the outer surfaces of the teeth—the sides facing the lips and cheeks.
- Keep the session calm and brief. Praise and reward your dog, and stop if brushing becomes distressing or unsafe.
- Build gradually toward daily brushing. Cornell’s 2018 article quotes licensed veterinary technician Bethany Wright recommending 60 seconds of daily brushing. That is published professional advice, not a guarantee that every dog will tolerate a full minute at first.
Cornell describes daily brushing as the mainstay of home care and the most effective home method for prevention. Wright’s advice appeared in Cornell’s February 21, 2018 dental-care article: “Plaque builds up on teeth within 12 hours of cleaning, therefore brushing your pet’s teeth at least once daily, for just 60 seconds, is the best and most effective method to decrease bacteria in the mouth.” Treat the 60-second target as her published recommendation, not as a universal measured threshold.

When to stop and contact your veterinarian
Do not force brushing if your dog is distressed or you cannot safely approach the mouth. Ask your veterinary team for help with handling or a brushing plan. Brushing is home care, not a substitute for veterinary evaluation or treatment of dental disease.
Cornell advises contacting a veterinarian if your dog has difficulty eating or a reduced appetite, bad breath, bleeding from the mouth, jaw or facial swelling, drooling, or nasal discharge. Your veterinarian can advise on evaluation, treatment, and dental cleaning.

Cornell lists dental diets, dental chews and treats, water additives, oral gels, and sprays as other home-care options. The Veterinary Oral Health Council’s accepted-products list covers categories including chews, wipes, water additives, toothbrushes, and dog toothpaste. Acceptance and suitability can change or vary by dog, so check the current list and discuss options with your veterinarian. These products are alternatives for home care, not equivalents to brushing or treatment for established disease.
