A weatherproof outdoor dog shelter needs more than four walls and a roof. Build a rigid, elevated structure with a waterproof envelope, a correctly sized entrance, protected ventilation, climate-appropriate insulation and dry bedding. Place it on level, well-drained ground, turn the opening away from prevailing wind, and inspect it after severe weather. The shelter should let the dog stand, turn around and lie down comfortably, but it should not be so large that body heat is lost unnecessarily.
This guide explains how to measure your dog, choose a site, construct and seal the shelter, manage heat and cold, and maintain it safely. Outdoor housing is not suitable for every dog or every storm; young, elderly, ill and short-coated dogs may need to live indoors or come inside whenever conditions become dangerous.

What makes an outdoor dog shelter genuinely weatherproof?
A weatherproof shelter does four jobs at once: it keeps rain, snow and wind out; keeps the floor dry and off the ground; limits heat loss or heat buildup; and remains safe and clean after repeated use. Ontario Regulation 444/19 describes required housing as shelter that “is waterproof and provides protection from the elements.” Treat that as a minimum, not a complete design brief.
- Waterproof envelope: Use exterior-grade materials, a sloped roof, overhangs, drip edges and sealed joints. The roof and wall junctions should shed water rather than trap it.
- Structural strength: The base must not rack or wobble, and the roof must stay attached in wind. Use exterior-rated fasteners and replace any component damaged by rot or impact.
- Elevation: A raised floor prevents splash, snowmelt and damp soil from entering. Toronto practical guidance uses at least two inches above grade as a threshold.
- Ventilation: Airflow controls condensation and summer heat. Vents must be protected from driving rain and positioned so the dog is not lying in a draft.
- Correct fit: The dog must stand, turn and lie down naturally. Excess interior volume is harder to warm in cold weather.
- Safe access: A flap or other wind break should reduce drafts without catching on the dog or blocking entry and exit.
Local animal-welfare bylaws can require dimensions, flooring, shade, temperature protection or inspection standards that are stricter than these general principles. Check the rules where the dog lives before construction.

How do I measure a doghouse before cutting materials?
Measure the individual dog while standing on a level surface. Use the measurements to set the interior, floor area and doorway; do not choose a house by breed label alone.
Take these measurements
- Shoulder height: Measure from the floor to the top of the shoulders (withers).
- Shoulder width: Measure across the widest part of the shoulders or chest.
- Body length: Measure from the nose to the base of the tail while the dog stands naturally. This helps set the sleeping length.
- Sitting height: Measure from the floor to the top of the head or ears while sitting. The dog should be able to sit without its head touching the roof.
Apply the published sizing rules carefully
The Saskatchewan SPCA gives a starting rule of 36 square inches of sleeping floor per inch of shoulder height. For example, a dog with a 20-inch shoulder height would start at 720 square inches of floor area (20 × 36). This is a sizing aid, not a substitute for checking the dog’s actual turning and lying posture.

Those figures belong to that plan; they are not a universal veterinary standard. If a dog is unusually broad, tall, arthritic or heavily coated, enlarge the opening enough for easy passage without creating a wind tunnel.
| Dimension | How to use it | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Sleeping floor | Start with 36 sq in per inch of shoulder height, then verify standing, turning and lying comfort. | Saskatchewan SPCA rule; year not stated on its page. |
| Door width | Shoulder-blade width plus 2–4 inches. | Lowe’s 2026 plan-specific guidance. |
| Door height | 0.75 × shoulder-to-ground height in the Lowe’s plan. | Plan-specific; adjust for the individual dog. |
| Head clearance | Allow the dog to sit without touching the roof. | Check the measured sitting height directly. |
Draw the floor plan on cardboard and have the dog stand, turn and lie on it before buying plywood. This catches a sizing error more cheaply than rebuilding a finished shell.
Where should an outdoor dog shelter sit?
Choose a level, well-drained location that stays shaded in hot weather and protected from wind in cold weather. A sound shelter can still become unsafe if it sits in a drainage path or full afternoon sun.
- Raise the floor on stable blocks or a rigid framed base; do not rely on loose bricks that can tilt.
- Avoid low spots, places that flood, and areas where roof runoff drains toward the entrance.
- Face the entrance away from the prevailing wind when practical. An offset entry or side-facing door can reduce direct drafts.
- Provide summer shade from a building, canopy or deciduous tree, while keeping branches and falling debris away from the roof.
- Leave enough clearance around the shelter to inspect walls, roofing, vents and drainage.
- Keep the structure away from chemical storage, sharp fencing, electrical hazards and escape gaps.
Toronto guidance uses a floor at least two inches above grade as a practical minimum. In snowy or flood-prone locations, a higher, securely anchored base may be necessary; the finished floor must remain stable and accessible to the dog.

What materials and tools are needed?
Use materials rated for exterior exposure and choose finishes that tolerate your local moisture, heat and cold. The list below covers the envelope; adapt quantities to your measured plan.
| Component | Suitable choices | Important checks |
|---|---|---|
| Base and framing | Durable lumber, including pressure-treated members where appropriate. | Keep treated wood where the dog cannot chew it; allow new materials to dry and follow product directions. |
| Floor and walls | Exterior-grade or pressure-treated plywood; weather-resistant siding can be added. | Seal cut edges and eliminate splinters, exposed nails and screw points. |
| Roof | Framed roof with felt paper and asphalt shingles, or another weather-resistant covering. | Include overhang, drip edge and sealed penetrations. |
| Insulation | Climate-appropriate wall, roof and floor insulation. | Enclose foam or fibrous material so the dog cannot chew or pull it out. |
| Fasteners | Exterior-rated screws or nails. | Set heads flush or countersunk; replace rusted or loose hardware. |
| Weather sealing | Exterior silicone or another sealant compatible with the roofing and siding. | Seal roof, trim and wall joints; do not block required ventilation. |
| Entrance protection | Flexible flap, offset doorway, self-closing door or similar wind/rain break. | It must not obstruct the dog or trap its collar. |
You will also need measuring and marking tools, a saw, drill/driver, level, clamps, a staple or fastening method suited to the flap, and personal protective equipment appropriate to cutting and treated lumber.
How do I build the raised base?
Start with the floor because every later wall and roof alignment depends on a rigid, level platform.
- Mark the measured floor dimensions on durable lumber and assemble a square or rectangular frame. Check both diagonals; equal diagonals indicate a square frame.
- Add enough internal support to prevent the plywood from flexing under the dog’s weight. Keep supports flush so no ridge can injure paws.
- Attach exterior-grade or pressure-treated plywood with exterior fasteners. Set fastener heads flush and remove every sharp protrusion.
- Set the base on stable blocks or a continuous support that keeps it level. Maintain at least two inches of clearance above grade where Toronto’s practical guidance applies, and increase clearance where snow or flooding demands it.
- Seal exposed cut edges and inspect the underside for gaps, rot-prone end grain and places where water can pool.
Do not enclose a damp crawl space beneath the floor without a way to inspect it. Standing water under the shelter accelerates rot and can keep the interior cold and humid.

How should I frame the walls and roof?
Frame the walls so they remain square under wind and roof load, then create a roof that sheds water beyond the wall line.
Walls
- Assemble wall frames on a flat surface, including the measured doorway opening. Keep the threshold low enough for the dog to step over comfortably but high enough to keep surface water out.
- Stand and brace the walls on the base. Check plumb, square and level before fixing them permanently.
- Sheath the exterior with exterior-grade plywood or install weather-resistant siding. Seal seams and protect exposed edges.
- Plan removable panels or a hinged roof before closing every surface. Access is essential for cleaning, drying and checking insulation.
Roof
- Use a sloped roof rather than a flat sheet that can hold water. Extend the roof beyond the walls to create an overhang.
- Install the roof sheathing, then the weather-resistant underlayment. The Lowe’s plan specifically uses felt paper, asphalt shingles and a drip edge.
- Install the drip edge so runoff leaves the roof rather than wicking into plywood edges.
- Seal roof-to-wall and trim joints with exterior silicone or a compatible sealant. Keep sealant out of the dog’s reach while curing and follow its label for ventilation and cure time.
A removable or hinged roof is preferable to a permanently sealed top: it allows the interior to be cleaned, bedding to be replaced and leaks to be found early.

How do I insulate a dog shelter without creating hazards?
Insulate the roof, walls and floor when the climate requires it, but never leave chewable insulation exposed. The Saskatchewan SPCA example places insulation around the sleeping area and emphasizes retaining ventilation.
- Install insulation between framing members where it fits without compressing or leaving large voids.
- Cover insulation with plywood or another durable liner that the dog cannot puncture, pull apart or ingest.
- Insulate the floor as well as the walls; a cold floor can defeat otherwise insulated walls.
- In hot climates, combine insulation with shade and airflow. Insulation slows heat transfer but does not cool a shelter in direct sun.
- Provide protected high and low ventilation openings or another design that exchanges air without admitting driving rain. Cover vents with durable screens and inspect them for blockage.
Do not seal the shelter airtight. Moisture from breathing, wet coats and damp bedding needs a route out, and stale air can build up in both summer and winter.
How do I keep rain, snow and wind out of the entrance?
Use a flexible flap, offset doorway, self-closing door or comparable wind break. Toronto animal-care guidance specifically lists a self-closing door, offset outer door or flexible flap; the opening must remain usable.
- Fit the flap so its bottom reaches low enough to reduce drafts but does not drag on the floor or trap water.
- Make sure the dog can push through it in both directions, including when tired, wet or wearing a collar.
- If wind drives rain straight into the opening, add an offset entrance or short exterior wind baffle rather than narrowing the passage.
- After installation, observe the dog entering and exiting. Remove, trim or reposition any covering that causes hesitation, snagging or blocked airflow.
Never use a rigid barrier that can trap the dog inside. Keep the threshold free of ice, packed snow and standing water.
What bedding is safe for an outdoor dog shelter?
Provide clean, dry straw or another bedding material that stays dry and can be replaced easily. Straw allows a dog to nest and is specifically recommended in the cited animal-care guidance.
- Replace straw when it becomes damp, dirty, compacted or moldy.
- Ontario guidance warns that blankets, towels and cushions can attract pests, develop mold or freeze when wet. Use them outdoors only if you can keep them reliably dry and inspect them frequently.
- Keep bedding off any bare ground and away from roof leaks or wall condensation.
- Do not overfill the shelter; the dog needs room to turn and lie flat.
Wet bedding is a heat-loss hazard in cold weather and a mold and pest problem in warm weather. A removable roof or access panel makes daily checks practical.

How do I inspect and maintain the shelter?
Inspect the shelter on a schedule and after heavy rain, snow, high winds or extreme heat. Small defects become leaks, drafts and injuries if they are ignored.
Weekly or routine checks
- Feel the floor and bedding for dampness; replace wet material immediately.
- Look for exposed nails, sharp edges, splinters, loose fasteners and chew damage.
- Check roof shingles or covering, drip edges, flashing and sealant for lifting, cracks or gaps.
- Clear vents and confirm that screens have not been blocked by hair, leaves or snow.
- Inspect underneath for standing water, rot, insect damage and unstable supports.
- Verify that the flap or door moves freely and that the dog can enter and leave without hesitation.
After the first heavy rain
- Inspect the interior roof, corners and floor perimeter for wet spots.
- Mark the leak location, dry the interior completely and repair the exterior source rather than simply adding interior caulk.
- Replace any soaked insulation or bedding that cannot be dried and cleaned safely.
Clean the interior regularly with a pet-safe method, rinse away residue and let every surface dry before replacing bedding. A shelter that cannot be opened for cleaning is difficult to keep sanitary.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When is outdoor housing unsafe?
A doghouse is a refuge, not a guarantee of safety during severe weather. Bring the dog indoors during dangerous cold, heat, storms, flooding or any condition the shelter cannot control.
- Young, aged, infirm and short-coated dogs are particularly vulnerable in cold conditions.
- Toronto lists shivering, weakness, slowed movement and seeking warm places as signs that a dog should come inside promptly.
- Move the dog indoors if the shelter is flooded, structurally damaged, losing its roof, filling with smoke or exposed to lightning, high winds or extreme heat.
- Provide shade and water in hot weather, but do not assume shade alone prevents heat stress.
Supervise acclimation to a new shelter. A dog that refuses to enter may be signaling a draft, heat, odor, unstable floor, intimidating flap or insufficient space; investigate instead of forcing it inside.
Should I build a shelter or buy one?
DIY construction offers control over dimensions and insulation, while a purchased shelter may save time. Either option must meet the same welfare requirements before appearance or convenience matters.
| Decision factor | DIY wood shelter | Purchased shelter |
|---|---|---|
| Weatherproof envelope | You choose roof, siding, overhangs and sealant; workmanship determines performance. | Inspect seams, roof and floor rather than trusting marketing language. |
| Insulation access | Can be built into walls, roof and floor and covered against chewing. | Verify whether insulation exists and whether panels allow inspection or replacement. |
| Floor elevation | Set the height and supports for your site. | Measure the actual clearance and add a stable platform if needed. |
| Entrance protection | Fit a flap or offset entry to the dog’s measurements. | Check that the supplied door does not block passage or ventilation. |
| Cleanability | Use a hinged roof or removable panel from the start. | Look for access large enough to remove bedding and dry surfaces. |
| Dog-size fit | Custom dimensions are possible. | Choose by measured interior and doorway, not a generic small/medium/large label. |
| Climate durability | Select materials and roof details for local rain, snow, sun and wind. | Confirm the construction is suited to your climate and anchor it securely. |
| Total cost | Includes lumber, plywood, roofing, insulation, fasteners, sealant and tools. | Includes the shelter, delivery, platform, modifications and replacement parts. |
Any local legal requirement is a pass/fail condition. A cheaper shelter that cannot stay dry, ventilated and secure is not a safe bargain.

What are the most common failure points?
The floor is damp
Raise the base, correct drainage and repair roof or wall leaks. Replace wet bedding and allow the interior to dry before the dog returns.
The dog will not use the doorway
Check opening width and height, flap resistance, threshold height, drafts and odors from uncured sealant. Remove or adjust the covering temporarily while teaching the dog that the shelter is safe.
The interior is humid or smells musty
Improve protected ventilation, remove damp bedding and inspect hidden insulation for condensation or leaks. Do not solve moisture by closing every vent.
The shelter overheats
Move it into shade, increase protected airflow and provide water. During heat waves, bring the dog indoors; insulation alone cannot offset direct sun and still air.
Roofing or trim lifts in wind
Replace loose fasteners, repair the drip edge and reseal joints. Anchor the base and relocate the shelter if the site is exposed to turbulent wind.
How do I check the finished shelter before the dog moves in?
- Confirm the dog can stand, turn around and lie down without touching walls or roof.
- Verify the doorway matches the measured dog and that the flap or door opens both ways.
- Check that the floor is level, stable, elevated and free of protruding fasteners.
- Look over every interior surface for splinters, sharp corners, exposed insulation and toxic or uncured coatings.
- Pour or hose water over the roof (without flooding the interior) and inspect seams and corners for entry points; dry the shelter afterward.
- Confirm vents are open, screened and protected from direct rain.
- Add dry bedding, then observe the dog entering, turning and settling before relying on the shelter overnight.
Frequently Asked Questions
How high should a doghouse be off the ground?
Toronto practical guidance uses at least two inches of floor elevation above grade. Raise it farther where snow, splash or flooding is common, but keep the platform stable and the entry easy to reach.
