Give your cat a safe place to retreat, keep your routine predictable, and spend quiet time nearby without staring, reaching, or trying to coax it out. Let the cat choose when to approach; reward those voluntary steps with a small treat or, once it is comfortable, a wand-toy game. Trust can take days, weeks, or months, and a cat that has suddenly started hiding or avoiding people should be checked by a veterinarian.

Why your cat may be avoiding you

Avoidance can reflect a naturally cautious temperament, limited early socialization, or a frightening experience. It can also be a response to stress, illness, or pain. The context matters: a newly adopted cat may need time to adjust, while a cat that was previously confident and has begun hiding deserves a health and welfare check.

Look for small signs of worry, including running away, retreating to hiding places, flattened ears, dilated pupils, or cowering. These are cues to pause and give the cat more space, not invitations to pursue or handle it. Cats Protection outlines these fear signs in its guide to shy cats.

Set up a safe, predictable space

Choose a quiet area where the cat can retreat without being cornered. Provide a covered or elevated refuge, such as a cardboard box or a covered bed, and make sure the cat has a clear way to leave. Keep food, water, and litter accessible nearby, but not inside the hiding place. Avoid pulling the cat out, blocking its exit, or repeatedly checking on it.

Keep feeding and interaction routines steady. Predictability helps the cat learn what to expect from its surroundings and from you. For a newly adopted cat, a quiet room can make the first stage of settling in less overwhelming; Cats Protection’s new-cat guidance recommends giving a cat time to explore at its own pace.

Let your cat get used to your presence

Sit nearby at a comfortable distance, ideally at the cat’s level, and turn slightly sideways rather than facing it head-on. Read or do another quiet activity. Speak calmly if you speak at all, and avoid staring or reaching toward the cat, especially into its refuge. Slow blinking may help keep your expression non-threatening, but the main goal is simply to be present without demanding a response.

Reward voluntary approaches without trapping the cat

When the cat chooses to come closer, stay calm and offer a small treat. Do not use the treat to lure it within reach and then pick it up or start petting; that can make approaching feel unsafe. Let the cat take the treat and leave if it wants to.

A fishing-rod or wand toy can offer another low-pressure way to interact once the cat is comfortable enough to play. It lets you engage from a distance without touching the cat. Keep play optional, and stop if the cat appears worried or disengages. Treats and toys are aids, not substitutes for the cat’s freedom to retreat.

Increase contact only when the cat is comfortable

Do not make petting or picking up the goal. If the cat begins seeking your company and accepts contact, let it set the pace; stop if it withdraws or shows signs of fear. A cat that still hides from people or reacts aggressively should not be put through forced handling exercises at home.

Cats Protection describes reward-based, one-second handling exercises for cats that already have a good bond with their person but dislike particular kinds of touch. Its handling-training guidance says this approach is not suitable for cats that are fearful and hiding from people or showing aggression toward them. In those cases, seek advice from a qualified cat behaviourist.

Give progress the time it needs

There is no reliable deadline for a cat to become comfortable. Cats Protection says, “Building the trust and confidence of a shy cat can take days, weeks or even months as it must always be done on the cat’s terms,” in its guide Helping nervous cats overcome their fears. That is qualitative guidance, not a measured average or a promise that every cat will become outgoing.

Notice small changes instead of expecting a sudden transformation: the cat may explore more, eat well, play, or choose to spend time in the same room. Some cats remain cautious, especially around unfamiliar people, even after they feel secure at home.

When to contact a veterinarian or behaviourist

Contact a veterinarian if hiding or avoidance is new, increasing, prolonged, or accompanied by another behavior change. Seek veterinary advice promptly if you are worried about the cat’s eating, drinking, or toileting. A change in behavior can have a medical cause, so do not assume a previously sociable cat is simply becoming shy.

If a veterinarian has ruled out medical causes and the problem continues, ask for help from a qualified cat behaviourist. Cats Protection’s advice on cats hiding and guidance on managing cat behaviour both explain when professional support may be appropriate.

Make introductions to visitors low-pressure

When visitors come over, introduce people one at a time and ask them to keep their voices calm. Make sure the cat can leave or reach a high hiding place; tell guests not to pick it up or approach its hiding spot. If the cat is comfortable enough, distant wand-toy play can be an optional way to engage. Cats Protection’s visitor-introduction advice notes that some cats may remain cautious of strangers throughout their lives.
