If you find a duckling alone, first watch and listen from a distance: its mother or siblings may be nearby. Leave a healthy duckling with its family and keep people and pets back. If it is injured, ill, in immediate danger, rejected by its known family, or its parent is known to be dead or missing, contact a local wildlife agency or permitted wildlife rehabilitator. If an expert advises temporary containment, keep it warm, quiet, and dark—and do not feed it, give it water, or put it in water unless that expert specifically directs you.
First decide whether the duckling needs help
If it is with its family and safe
Leave the duckling where it is, keep your distance, and move children and pets away. A duckling briefly out of sight of its mother is not necessarily orphaned. If it seems separated from a known family

Local advice differs on whether and how to attempt a reunion: Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife says a duckling separated from its known family can be placed close enough for the parent to hear and watched from a distance, while Utah Division of Wildlife Resources advises leaving a separated duckling where it is unless it is trapped in a dangerous place. Because the right response depends on the situation and local guidance, call a wildlife agency or rehabilitator if you are unsure. If it is injured, ill, rejected, or in immediate danger
Contact a permitted wildlife rehabilitator or the relevant local wildlife agency promptly if you see an injury or signs of illness, know the parent is dead or missing, or the known family rejects the duckling after an appropriate reunion attempt. A duckling trapped in a storm drain, pool, or another hazardous spot may need rescue advice from wildlife or municipal authorities. Tell the professional where the duckling is, what you observed, and whether it is hurt or exposed to an immediate hazard. Ask whether to leave it in place or contain it, and follow the advice for your location. Wildlife possession rules vary by jurisdiction; local authorities can tell you what is permitted.
What to do while you arrange help
Follow the rehabilitator’s instructions first. Do not capture a duckling simply because it is alone; contain it only if an expert advises you or immediate safety requires action while you seek local rescue guidance.

If temporary containment is advised
- Place it in a small, secure cardboard box or carrier with air holes or other ventilation. A suitable household box may be enough; a special carrier is not required.
- Line the bottom with clean paper towels or a clean, soft, smooth cloth. Do not use terry cloth, which Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife specifically cautions against.
- Keep the container in a warm, quiet, dark place, away from children and pets. Minimize handling and leave the duckling alone as much as possible.
- Use supplemental warmth only as directed by a wildlife professional. Some agency guidance describes a heating pad on its lowest setting under part of the box or a warm—not hot—rice pack beside the animal. Keep heat gentle and make sure the duckling can move away from it.
- Wash your hands and any items that contacted the bird after handling.
Do not feed, water, or put it in water
Do not offer food or water, and do not place the duckling in water while waiting for help unless a qualified wildlife professional specifically instructs you. Wildlife agencies do not give identical directions for every separation scenario, including whether to move a duckling or how long to watch for its parent. There is no universal waiting period or reunion maneuver that applies to every location and circumstance. Keep your distance, avoid unrelated broods, and ask a local agency or permitted rehabilitator when the situation is unclear.
