To care for a pet gerbil properly, keep compatible gerbils together in a secure, well-ventilated solid-bottom tank with deep burrowing bedding; feed a complete gerbil diet; provide safe chewing, digging, sand-bathing, and exercise opportunities; handle the animal gently without touching its tail; and monitor its appetite, stool, breathing, coat, teeth, and movement every day.

What a gerbil needs to thrive

The pet gerbil is usually the Mongolian gerbil (Meriones unguiculatus). It is a social, active animal whose normal life revolves around digging, burrowing, shredding, nesting, foraging, chewing, exploring, and sand grooming. Good care therefore means more than providing food and a small cage: gerbils need compatible company, a secure tank-style habitat with deep bedding, a balanced gerbil diet, safe exercise, gentle handling, and close observation for illness.

Most pet gerbils live about three to four years, although genetics, age at acquisition, diet, housing, stress, and veterinary care can affect an individual lifespan. They are relatively tidy and produce little urine, but they are not a low-maintenance substitute for a hamster. The most common preventable problems come from unsuitable housing, wire or mesh flooring, poor diets, high humidity, unsafe nesting material, rough handling, and delayed veterinary care.

Before bringing gerbils home

  • Plan for a compatible same-sex pair or stable group, rather than buying a single gerbil on impulse.
  • Set up the enclosure completely before arrival, including deep bedding, nesting material, water, food, a sand bath, and hiding places.
  • Find an exotics veterinarian who treats small companion mammals and learn how emergency visits are handled locally.
  • Have a secure, ventilated carrier ready for transport.
  • Choose a quiet, dry location away from direct sun, drafts, fumes, and household predators such as cats and dogs.

Gerbils are quick and fragile. Their care is manageable, but children should never be responsible for handling, feeding, or health decisions without close adult supervision.

Housing: choose a secure tank-style enclosure

A glass aquarium or gerbilarium with a secure, well-ventilated mesh lid is generally a better choice than a conventional wire cage. The enclosure should be escape-proof, resistant to chewing, tall enough for the gerbil to stand upright on its hind legs, and large enough to hold deep bedding, nesting areas, enrichment, and an exercise wheel without becoming cramped.

When comparing a glass gerbilarium with a secure mesh lid, assess the whole usable habitat rather than relying on a product label alone. Merck gives approximately five gallons of space per gerbil as a practical minimum rule of thumb, which works out to at least ten gallons for two animals. That figure is not a complete welfare standard: a larger floor area and more usable burrowing depth are preferable whenever possible. The enclosure must still have good airflow; a covered aquarium with inadequate ventilation can create a damp, unhealthy environment.

Flooring and bedding

The floor must be solid. Wire or mesh flooring can injure feet and limbs, and it does not allow gerbils to dig normally. Provide a deep, stable layer of bedding—Merck recommends filling roughly one-third of the enclosure—so the animals can excavate tunnels and construct chambers. The exact depth depends on the enclosure design, the number of gerbils, and how well the habitat remains ventilated, but a thin layer is not enough for normal burrowing.

Dust-free paper bedding is a conservative, practical choice. Use bedding that is unscented and suitable for small animals, and avoid products that are visibly dusty. Cedar and untreated pine shavings may contain potentially harmful aromatic oils. The safety of some other wood substrates remains debated, so ask an exotics veterinarian if you are considering a less-established material.

Add plain, unscented shredded facial tissue or similar plain paper for nest construction. Do not use stringy commercial nesting fibers, cotton-like strands, or other materials that can wind around toes, feet, or limbs. A sturdy wooden, cardboard, or ceramic nest box gives the gerbils a protected place to sleep and build their nest.

Temperature, humidity, and location

Keep the habitat dry and well ventilated. Merck’s pet-owner guidance gives approximately 60–70°F (16–21°C) and relative humidity below 50% as useful environmental targets. Avoid direct sunlight, radiators, air-conditioning drafts, extreme temperatures, kitchen fumes, cigarette smoke, aerosols, and areas where other pets can frighten or attack the gerbils.

Excessive humidity and poor ventilation can contribute to nasal dermatitis and rough, matted coats. A gerbil that develops facial lesions or a deteriorating coat needs more than a habitat adjustment; arrange veterinary advice, especially if the skin is open, worsening, or infected.

What to feed a gerbil

Make a complete commercial diet formulated specifically for gerbils the foundation of the diet. Merck recommends a pelleted food containing approximately 18–20% protein. The amount an adult eats is commonly around 5–8 grams of pellets per day, but this is only a starting reference. Product density, age, body size, activity, health, and veterinary advice all affect the right portion.

When choosing complete pelleted gerbil food, read the label rather than assuming that any rodent mix is nutritionally appropriate. Homemade diets, table scraps, seed-only diets, and food made for another species can be unbalanced. Seed-heavy mixes also allow selective feeding: a gerbil may consume appealing, high-fat seeds and leave the pellets that provide important nutrients.

  • Use sunflower or pumpkin seeds only as occasional, very small treats.
  • Do not make sunflower seeds a dietary staple; they are high in fat and low in calcium.
  • Introduce any new food cautiously.
  • Change the main diet gradually rather than replacing it abruptly.
  • Monitor appetite and stool during a food transition.

Never offer chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, or unknown human foods. A small rodent can become seriously ill from diarrhea or dehydration, so stop experimenting with new foods and contact a veterinarian if soft stool, watery diarrhea, depression, or loss of appetite develops.

Water

Gerbils often drink relatively little because they produce concentrated urine, but they must have constant access to clean, fresh water. Check the water supply every day and confirm that the bottle’s spout is not blocked. Wash the bottle or bowl whenever it is refilled and more often if it becomes soiled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A water bottle with a metal spout can reduce contamination. A heavy, shallow bowl is another option if it cannot be tipped over or quickly buried under bedding. Whichever method you use, check that the gerbils can reach it and that water is actually flowing.

Gerbil companionship and introductions

Gerbils are social animals and are generally best kept with compatible same-sex companions, often littermates or animals raised together. Solitary housing can be stressful, but adding a stranger directly to an established gerbil’s enclosure is dangerous because the resident animal may treat the newcomer as a territorial intruder.

If you need to introduce gerbils, use a gradual, supervised bonding method with guidance from an experienced rescue, reputable breeder, or exotics veterinarian. Do not simply place one unfamiliar gerbil into another’s established habitat and hope they will work it out.

Check bonded animals regularly. A pair can become incompatible later, even after living peacefully together for a long time. Signs of serious conflict include:

  • persistent chasing or cornering;
  • biting, wounds, or blood;
  • fur loss associated with fighting;
  • one gerbil being blocked from food, water, shelter, or nesting space; and
  • a tense, repeated pattern of aggression rather than ordinary play or brief disagreements.

Separate fighting gerbils immediately and contact a veterinarian, particularly if there are wounds. Use safe handling equipment and avoid putting your hands between animals that are actively attacking each other.

Enrichment, digging, and exercise

Digging and shredding are essential behaviors, not optional entertainment. Deep bedding is the main enrichment feature, but you should also rotate safe objects that encourage chewing, construction, exploration, and foraging.

Useful choices include cardboard tubes, plain cardboard boxes, tunnels, platforms, untreated chew-safe wood, and scatter-feeding opportunities. Replace cardboard when it becomes wet, moldy, or heavily soiled. Do not use painted, chemically treated, glued, sharp, or easily splintered objects.

Running wheel safety

A wheel is optional enrichment, not a substitute for burrowing space. If you provide one, choose a solid-surface running wheel. Traditional wire or slatted wheels can trap feet and may injure the delicate tail. The wheel should be large enough that the gerbil can run without a sharply curved back.

Wheel sizing varies with the animal and the design, so check the gerbil’s posture visually rather than trusting a marketing label. Remove or replace a wheel if the gerbil runs with a pronounced arch, catches a foot, chews unsafe parts, or cannot use it comfortably.

Sand bathing

Provide a stable dish of gerbil-safe bathing sand large enough for the animal to roll in. Sand bathing helps remove coat lipids and supports normal grooming behavior. Use bathing sand rather than dusty powder, and avoid scented or unverified products. Remove or clean the dish when it becomes contaminated with urine or feces.

How to tame and handle a gerbil

Give a newly arrived gerbil time to settle before attempting prolonged handling. Sit quietly near the enclosure, speak softly, and offer a small appropriate treat. Let the animal investigate an open hand instead of chasing it around the habitat. Short, calm sessions build more trust than forced restraint.

When lifting a gerbil, scoop or cup it with two hands and support the entire body. Handle it close to the floor or another low, secure surface because gerbils can jump unexpectedly and a fall can cause severe injury.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Never pick up a gerbil by the tail. The skin can slip off the tail, exposing underlying tissue and bone. This degloving injury is an emergency and may require surgery or amputation. If tail skin is missing, bleeding, or badly damaged, place the gerbil in a secure carrier and seek veterinary treatment promptly; do not attempt home amputation, splinting, or medication.

Children should handle gerbils only while an adult is directly supervising. A squeeze, drop, or tail grab can cause significant injury even when the child did not intend harm.

Cleaning the gerbil habitat

Gerbils usually produce relatively little urine and dry feces, so they may need fewer complete cleanings than some other rodents. Merck’s pet-owner guidance recommends cleaning and disinfecting at least every two to three weeks, while spot-cleaning wet or contaminated areas and replacing soiled nesting material more often.

Do not strip away every familiar scent unnecessarily. When practical, retain a small amount of clean, uncontaminated nesting material during a deeper clean and return it to the refreshed enclosure. This preserves some familiarity without leaving dirty bedding in place.

Adjust the schedule to the enclosure, bedding depth, number of gerbils, ventilation, and amount of soiling. A practical routine is:

Daily

  • Check that water is available and the bottle or bowl is functioning.
  • Check food, appetite, activity, breathing, coat, eyes, and obvious injuries.
  • Remove wet, spoiled, or visibly contaminated material.
  • Look for fighting, excessive humidity, poor ventilation, or escape damage.

Regularly

  • Wash food and water equipment whenever it is refilled or contaminated.
  • Replace dirty nesting material and clean the sand bath as needed.
  • Perform a deeper clean and disinfection at an interval appropriate for the habitat.
  • Rinse and dry cleaned items thoroughly before returning the gerbils.

Wash your hands after handling gerbils, their waste, bedding, food equipment, or enclosure surfaces. If one gerbil is ill with diarrhea or another potentially infectious condition, ask the veterinarian about isolation, order of handling, and sanitation.

Daily health checks

Learn what is normal for each gerbil. A healthy animal generally has a smooth coat, bright eyes, clean nostrils, formed stool, normal appetite, normal activity, and properly aligned teeth. Because small rodents can deteriorate quickly while showing subtle signs, periodic weighing on a small gram scale can reveal gradual weight loss, especially in an older gerbil.

Contact an exotics veterinarian promptly for any of the following:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • loss of appetite, lethargy, dehydration, or a hunched posture;
  • diarrhea or persistently soft stool;
  • breathing difficulty, nasal discharge, or eye discharge;
  • a rough, matted, excessively itchy, or thinning coat;
  • hair loss, lumps, seizures, lameness, or reduced mobility;
  • abnormal chewing, overgrown teeth, or misaligned teeth;
  • trauma, fighting wounds, eye injuries, or missing tail skin; and
  • persistent head tilt or unexplained weight loss.

Diarrhea and possible Tyzzer disease

Watery diarrhea combined with depression, dehydration, ruffled fur, a hunched posture, or loss of appetite can signal a serious infectious illness such as Tyzzer disease. Isolate the affected gerbil from companions, handle healthy animals first and the sick animal afterward, and arrange veterinary evaluation. The enclosure and equipment may need thorough sanitation. Do not wait to see whether a severely ill gerbil recovers on its own.

Nasal dermatitis

Nasal dermatitis may cause reddish-brown porphyrin staining, redness, scabbing, sores, and hair loss around the nose and eyes. Stress, overcrowding, high humidity, and poor ventilation can contribute. Correcting the environment is important, but it should not replace veterinary care when lesions are open, worsening, painful, or infected.

Older-gerbil problems

Age-related kidney disease, tumors, and inner-ear masses can occur. A persistent head tilt, balance problem, new lump, reduced appetite, or unexplained weight loss deserves assessment rather than an assumption that it is simply old age.

Plan veterinary care before an emergency

Identify an exotics veterinarian before acquiring gerbils and ask about routine examinations, after-hours emergencies, and which clinic handles urgent small-mammal cases. PetMD recommends annual veterinary examinations and suggests bringing information about the enclosure, diet, treats, bedding, and behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep a secure small-animal carrier available. It should provide ventilation and prevent escape, and it should be large enough for safe transport without allowing the gerbil to be thrown around. Bring a sample or photograph of unusual stool, a record of weight changes, and the food or bedding labels when those details may help the veterinarian.

There is no evidence that every gerbil universally needs a particular vaccine, supplement, or home remedy. Preventive care should be individualized according to age, origin, health history, environment, and local disease risks. Never give human medication, leftover prescriptions, or an unvetted parasite treatment without veterinary direction.

Practical gerbil starter checklist

  • Secure glass tank or gerbilarium with a well-ventilated mesh lid
  • Solid floor and enough height for upright standing
  • Deep, dust-free, unscented bedding suitable for burrowing
  • Plain paper nesting material
  • Species-specific complete pelleted gerbil food
  • Fresh-water bottle or stable, non-tippable bowl
  • Stable sand-bath dish and gerbil-safe bathing sand
  • Solid-surface running wheel, if used
  • Cardboard tubes, plain boxes, tunnels, and safe chew items
  • Food dish or scatter-feeding setup
  • Secure transport carrier
  • Small gram scale for periodic weight checks
  • Contact details for an exotics veterinarian and emergency clinic

The safest setup is not necessarily the one with the most accessories. Prioritize compatible companionship, usable floor area, deep bedding, ventilation, solid flooring, safe food and water, and daily observation. Everything else should support those fundamentals rather than replace them.

Evidence note

This care guide reflects guidance summarized from Merck Veterinary Manual, the RSPCA, Blue Cross, and PetMD. Housing dimensions, bedding depth, cleaning frequency, diet quantities, and wheel fit should be adjusted for the specific enclosure, number of animals, product, and individual gerbils.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of cage is best for a gerbil?

A glass aquarium or gerbilarium with a secure, well-ventilated mesh lid is generally the safest housing style. It needs a solid floor, enough height for upright standing, ample usable space, and deep bedding for burrowing. A five-gallon-per-gerbil figure is only a practical minimum rule of thumb, not a complete welfare target; larger habitats are preferable.

Should gerbils live alone or in pairs?

Gerbils are generally best kept with compatible same-sex companions, often littermates or animals raised together. Never place an unfamiliar gerbil directly into an established gerbil’s enclosure. Introductions should be gradual, supervised, and guided by an experienced rescue, breeder, or exotics veterinarian.

What should a pet gerbil eat?

Provide a complete commercial food formulated specifically for gerbils. Merck recommends approximately 18–20% protein, with a typical adult intake of about 5–8 grams of pellets daily as a starting reference. Avoid seed-only diets, and use high-fat seeds only as occasional treats.

How often should a gerbil cage be cleaned?

Spot-clean wet or spoiled bedding and contaminated nesting material as needed. A deeper clean and disinfection is commonly performed at least every two to three weeks, but the right interval depends on the habitat, bedding, ventilation, number of gerbils, and amount of soiling. Retain a small amount of clean nesting material when practical.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How should you safely pick up a gerbil?

Never pick up a gerbil by its tail. Tail skin can slip off, causing a serious degloving injury. Scoop or cup the animal with two hands while supporting its entire body, and handle it close to a low surface to reduce the risk of a fall.

The Bottom Line

The essentials are simple but specific: keep compatible gerbils together, house them in a dry and well-ventilated solid-bottom tank with deep bedding, feed a complete gerbil diet, provide safe digging and grooming opportunities, handle the tail-free body gently, and treat changes in appetite, stool, breathing, coat, teeth, mobility, or skin as reasons to contact an exotics veterinarian.
