Brush your cat’s teeth regularly with a soft cat toothbrush and toothpaste made for cats. Aim for daily brushing; if that is not realistic, VCA’s veterinary guidance gives three times a week as a minimum recommendation for removing plaque and helping prevent tartar. Start slowly, stop if your cat seems sore, and keep veterinary dental checks on the calendar: brushing helps prevent buildup but cannot diagnose or treat disease below the gumline.
Why cats need dental care
Plaque can build up on teeth, contribute to gingivitis and harden into tartar. Brushing helps remove plaque before it hardens, but it cannot reverse established periodontal damage. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine reported in 2017 that studies found some form of dental disease in 50–90% of cats older than four years. That range is Cornell’s published summary, not a new population survey.

Dental disease is not always obvious at home. Cornell also reported that 30–70% of cats show some sign of tooth resorption, a condition whose cause it described as unknown. A defect or pinkish area near the gumline can be a clue, but only a veterinary examination can determine what is happening.
1. Make brushing a routine goal
Daily brushing is the most beneficial target in VCA’s brushing guidance. If you cannot manage it every day, VCA gives three times per week as the minimum recommendation for removing plaque and helping prevent tartar. Treat that as a fallback, not as equivalent to daily brushing.

2. Check for signs of pain before you begin
Do not try to brush through an apparently painful mouth or severe gum inflammation. Cornell warns that brushing severe gingivitis can hurt. Seek veterinary advice if you notice red, swollen, painful or bleeding gums; drooling; persistent bad breath; hesitation or refusal to eat; turning the head while chewing; a preference for soft food; loose teeth; or tooth loss. Oral pain can be subtle, and these signs do not identify a specific diagnosis on their own.
3. Choose supplies made for cats
Use a cat toothbrush and toothpaste formulated for cats. Do not use human toothpaste: Cornell cautions that human products can be toxic, while VCA notes that swallowed toothpaste ingredients can cause digestive upset. A small, soft toothbrush is suitable for brushing; a finger brush or soft gauze may help introduce mouth handling. Ask your veterinarian if you are unsure what is safe for your cat.

4. Let your cat investigate the taste and smell
Choose a relaxed moment and let your cat sniff the brush and toothpaste. Cornell’s gradual introduction plan begins by offering a dab of cat toothpaste on a finger and rewarding calm interest. Keep the first experiences brief and positive; the aim is to make the supplies familiar, not to complete a full brushing session at once.

5. Build tolerance in small steps
Progress only while your cat remains comfortable. Cornell’s four-week example moves from toothpaste on a canine tooth, to licking toothpaste from the brush, and then to brief contact with the brush at the lip and gumline. It is a sample training sequence, not a deadline: some cats need more time, and others may progress sooner. Do not force the mouth open.

6. Brush the outer surfaces near the gumline
When your cat tolerates the brush, gently lift the lip while keeping the mouth closed. Brush the outside surfaces, starting with the canine teeth and the larger cheek teeth, then gradually add more teeth. Cornell describes angling the bristles at about 45 degrees toward the crevice between tooth and gum. Use gentle movements and stop if your cat shows discomfort.
7. Treat other dental products as a veterinarian-guided fallback
If brushing is not workable, ask your veterinarian whether a dental diet, treat or other product suits your cat. Check the current Veterinary Oral Health Council accepted-products list for products accepted for plaque or tartar control. Acceptance applies to a specific product and claim; it does not mean every dental-labelled item works, or that a product cures existing disease.

When weighing an alternative, consider whether there is evidence for the specific product, whether your cat will accept it consistently, whether you can use it safely, and whether it fits your cat’s dental condition. The veterinary sources do not establish that treats, diets, additives or chews are equivalent to brushing.
8. Keep professional dental care on the calendar
Home brushing cannot examine below the gumline or assess tooth roots. A veterinary dental evaluation may include probing, dental radiographs and cleaning under anesthesia when indicated. These procedures help identify disease that cannot be assessed by brushing at home. Cornell’s guide to dental disease in cats explains why veterinary assessment matters; the American Veterinary Dental College’s owner resources also describe professional dental care.
