Daily brushing with cat-specific toothpaste is the preferred home method for reducing plaque, but it is only one part of dental care. Introduce brushing gradually, never force it if your cat seems uncomfortable, and arrange veterinary advice for signs such as bad breath, red gums, drooling, or trouble eating. Home care cannot diagnose or treat disease below the gumline.
Why cat dental care matters
Dental disease can be difficult to spot at home. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine reports that studies have found dental disease in 50–90% of cats older than four years. That broad range is not a precise prevalence for every cat, but it underscores why regular checks matter. Cornell’s feline dental disease overview describes common problems and signs.

Brushing helps remove plaque from tooth surfaces; it does not remove hardened calculus, and it cannot rule out or treat disease below the gumline. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) distinguishes home plaque control from professional dental assessment and care.
What you need for brushing
- A soft-bristled toothbrush made for pets, sized for your cat.
- Toothpaste labeled for cats. Do not use human toothpaste, which can be toxic to cats.
- Small rewards your cat enjoys, such as praise or a treat, to reinforce calm cooperation.
A cat toothbrush and feline toothpaste kit can make it easier to have the right supplies on hand. The kit supports a brushing routine; it is not a treatment for existing dental disease.

How to introduce toothbrushing
Go at your cat’s pace. AAHA recommends daily brushing for it to be beneficial, but it can take time to build tolerance. Cornell’s four-week acclimation outline uses short, positive steps rather than trying to brush a full mouth at once.
- Let your cat inspect and taste the toothpaste. Offer a small amount of toothpaste made for cats and reward calm interest.
- Touch toothpaste to a canine tooth. Once your cat accepts the taste, apply a little to one canine tooth with your finger. Keep the session brief and rewarding.
- Introduce the toothbrush. Let your cat sniff it, then touch it gently to the teeth when the cat is relaxed.
- Begin brushing gently. When the brush is accepted, place it carefully between the lips and gums. Angle the bristles toward the narrow space between the teeth and gums, and focus on the outer tooth surfaces.
Build up gradually as your cat allows. A calm, brief session is preferable to restraint or force. If the mouth seems painful or inflamed, stop and ask a veterinarian to assess it before attempting to brush again. Cornell’s pet dental-care guidance also emphasizes introducing care gently.

If your cat will not accept brushing
Do not turn brushing into a struggle. AAHA’s feline life-stage guidance says a dental diet may be beneficial for an adult cat that will not allow routine brushing. Ask your veterinarian whether a particular diet is suitable for your cat.

The Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) lists accepted feline products in several categories, including diets, treats, water additives, gels, sprays, toothpaste and brush products, wipes, and powders. Examples on its cat-product list include Hill’s Science Diet Oral Care for Cats, Royal Canin Feline Dental Diet, Healthymouth feline products, ProDen PlaqueOff powder, Feline Greenies, Whiskas Dentabites, and Purina DentaLife. - Delious Chicken flavored Cat Toothpaste: Formulated specifically with your cat's preferences in mind
| Approach | What it does | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Toothbrushing | Mechanically removes plaque from tooth surfaces. | Daily brushing is AAHA’s target; use cat-specific supplies and do not brush a painful mouth. |
| VOHC-accepted products | Have a product-specific accepted claim on the VOHC list. | Claims vary by product. Check the current listing and ask a veterinarian about suitability. |
| Dental diet | May be beneficial for an adult cat that will not allow routine brushing, according to AAHA feline life-stage guidance. | Discuss the diet with a veterinarian, who can consider your cat’s individual needs. |
These options support home prevention; none replaces a veterinary dental examination.

Severe gingivitis can make brushing painful. A veterinarian needs to examine the mouth to assess disease. AAHA explains that a complete oral evaluation includes examination under anesthesia and may involve dental radiographs and treatment. Cleaning without anesthesia addresses only visible surfaces; it cannot diagnose or treat disease below the gumline. See AAHA’s guidance on professional cleanings, anesthesia, and home care.

Keep home care and veterinary care in perspective
Brushing and suitable dental products can help manage plaque between visits, while examinations let a veterinarian assess problems that home care cannot identify. Follow your veterinarian’s advice on examination timing and any cleaning or treatment your cat needs. For guidance on choosing home products, AAHA discusses recommending oral-hygiene products and nutrition and dental health.
