Use cat-safe balcony netting to close exposed openings while leaving the mesh open to airflow. The key is a secure fit around your particular balcony: check every gap, follow the netting maker’s instructions, and confirm that the attachment is allowed and does not obstruct required access or fire egress. No single mesh size or mounting method is established for every balcony.
Why balconies need a barrier
Cats can fall from balconies, terraces, and fire escapes, sometimes while distracted by something outside. A fall can cause severe injury or death; cats do not need to deliberately jump for an accident to happen. The ASPCA reports that 90% of cats who receive immediate and proper medical attention after a high-rise fall survive. Choose a barrier that suits the balcony

International Cat Care recommends blocking off balconies or covering them with netting. Netting is the most direct option when it can be fitted to enclose the open sides and any overhead gaps without sealing the area from airflow. A catio
A catio is an enclosed outdoor area that may suit a layout where netting cannot be fitted securely. The Humane Society of the United States includes prefabricated catios among options for safe outdoor access, but its general guidance does not establish that a particular catio will fit a balcony or comply with a building’s rules. Check the whole installation before relying on it
There is no universal balcony-net specification in the cited guidance. Evaluate the actual opening and installation rather than assuming a product category alone makes the space safe.
- Measure the openings you need to enclose, including the gaps between or beneath railings.
- Look at the railing shape and the space above it. Include overhead and corner gaps in your plan.
- Work out how the net can be held securely across the full perimeter; follow the specific product’s installation directions.
- Inspect the completed barrier for gaps, loose edges, or places where the cat could get around it.
- Ask your landlord or building management whether the proposed attachment is permitted. Check applicable local requirements and ensure the barrier will not interfere with required access or fire egress.
These are practical checks, not a tested installation method or a guarantee of safety. Attachment rules and requirements depend on the building, product, and location.

Secure nearby open windows separately
A balcony barrier does not protect a cat at an open window nearby. The ASPCA advises installing snug, sturdy window screens. If a screen is adjustable, wedge it tightly into its frame.
