How to Cat-Proof a Fence: Practical Ways to Give Your Cat Safer Outdoor Access

Close gaps and remove launch points first, then choose a barrier suited to your fence, yard, and cat. Learn the published guidance for inward-angled netting and how to supervise after installation.

To cat-proof a fence, first close gaps beneath and through it, secure the gates, and remove nearby objects your cat can use to climb or jump over. If those fixes are not enough, consider inward-angled netting, fence-top rollers, or a fully enclosed outdoor space. The right choice depends on your fence, yard, and cat; no design guarantees that every cat will stay contained.

Veterinary guidance supports controlled outdoor access as one way to provide stimulation while reducing outdoor risks, but it does not certify a particular fence or product as “vet-approved.”

Start by finding how your cat gets out

Watch your cat around the fence before choosing an extension. A cat that squeezes through a gap needs a different fix from one that climbs a post, jumps from a shed, or uses a tree branch as a launch point.

  • Inspect the fence line, corners, and the space beneath the fence for holes or loose sections.
  • Check that gates close securely and do not leave a gap at the bottom or sides.
  • Move or block nearby trees, shrubs, furniture, stored materials, and equipment that could help your cat climb or jump over.
  • Look for places where another cat could enter the yard, and consider whether an extension would interfere with gates or other uses of the space.

Agriculture Victoria’s cat-proof fencing guide also describes a smooth band around a tree trunk as one possible climbing deterrent: the band is 600 mm wide and placed at least 2 metres above ground. Treat those dimensions as guidance for that method, not as a guarantee for every tree or cat.

Choose a barrier that fits the fence and yard

There are three main approaches: an inward-angled net barrier added to an existing fence, rollers fitted along the fence top, or a freestanding or attached enclosure. A combination may make sense if the yard has more than one escape route.

Option May suit Points to assess
Inward-angled netting An existing fence where supports and netting can be securely attached. Fence construction, gate access, attachment strength, net openings, weather exposure, and sharp edges.
Fence-top rollers A fence where a roller system can be fitted without obstructing gates or other use of the yard. Fence layout, installation and maintenance, and whether the cat can use nearby objects to bypass the barrier. The cited sources do not establish comparative success rates.
Freestanding or attached enclosure A yard where the fence line is unsuitable, or where a more contained outdoor area is preferred. Space, shelter, water, enrichment, refuge, and how the enclosure connects to the home.

The Cat Protection Society of NSW says the choice among netting, fence-top devices, enclosures, or combinations depends on garden size and type, the cat’s ability to escape, and how the outdoor area is used. The Victorian code of practice for keeping cats also recognizes enclosures, enclosed verandahs, and cat-proof fences with inward-angled netting or an inside ledge as containment approaches. For a group enclosure, it calls for hiding and escape areas that provide refuge.

How to add an inward-angled net barrier

Agriculture Victoria publishes a specific DIY design for an existing fence. Its measurements are recommendations for that design, not universal specifications or proof that a fence will contain every cat.

  1. Check the fence and permissions. Confirm that the fence can support attachments, that gates will still work, and that the proposed extension stays within your property where applicable. Check with your local authority and review any property restrictions before adding height or extensions.
  2. Choose suitable netting. The guide calls for flexible, strong, UV-stable, rot-resistant netting. Openings must be small enough that a cat’s head cannot become caught. The pictured example uses 50 mm openings; that example is not a blanket specification for every cat or net product. The guide describes the netting as flexible and floppy and advises against rigid galvanized mesh for this method.
  3. Fit the angled supports. In the cited design, 25 mm tubing forms the supports. The inward-angled pipe section is 0.7 metres long and set at an angle of at least 35 degrees. The total height of the fence and barrier is at least 2 metres.
  4. Secure the structure along the fence. The guide places supports at fence posts, corners, and gates, with no more than 2.8 metres between supports. Its materials include pipe supports, clamps, soft tie wire, wire clips, screws, and masonry plugs. The appropriate fasteners depend on the fence and surface; the list is not a required kit for every installation.
  5. Inspect before letting your cat use the yard. Check that the net is firmly attached, gates open and close, and there are no sharp edges, snag points, or openings that could trap your cat. Recheck the structure after weather or any impact that could loosen it.

The height, angle, pipe length, and support spacing above come from Agriculture Victoria’s published design; the page does not state a publication year. They are construction guidance, not study results or a guarantee of containment.

Supervise and maintain the barrier

A new barrier may change how your cat tries to leave, so watch your cat closely after installation. Agriculture Victoria advises: “Following installation of cat proof fencing, it is important to supervise your cat carefully, until you are confident that it is not able to escape.”

  • Observe whether your cat climbs, jumps, squeezes through, or finds a route around the barrier.
  • Check netting, attachments, gates, and corners regularly for damage, looseness, or new gaps.
  • Reassess nearby launch points if your cat changes its escape strategy.
  • Keep the outdoor area comfortable and usable, with suitable shelter and water; for an enclosure, include enrichment and places to retreat.

Controlled outdoor access reduces some risks, not all of them

The American Association of Feline Practitioners’ 2024 Indoor/Outdoor Lifestyle Position Statement says controlled outdoor access—such as an enclosure, cat-safe fence, or harness and leash—can provide stimulation while minimizing outdoor risks. It recommends daytime outdoor access and indoor or enclosed access at night for predator safety. That is general veterinary-association guidance, not an endorsement of a specific fence design.
