Take the puppy to a veterinary clinic, animal shelter, or animal-control office and ask staff to scan it with a universal microchip reader. Request a slow scan over the entire body and repeat passes, because chips can use different frequencies, can move from their original position, and are not detected perfectly by every scanner. If a number appears, write it down exactly, use the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) Universal Pet Microchip Lookup Tool to identify registries that may hold a record, and file a found-pet report with your local shelter or animal-control agency.
A microchip is an identification number, not a GPS tracker and not the owner’s telephone number. The scan and the registry search are separate steps, and local rules determine what you must do after finding an animal.

Where can I get a found puppy scanned for a microchip?
Call the nearest practical location before travelling if you can. Ask whether staff can safely handle and scan a stray puppy, whether walk-in scanning is available, whether a fee applies, and whether someone can help with a registry search and found-pet report. Free walk-in scanning is common guidance, but availability and charges differ by clinic and locality.

| Place | What it can usually do | What to confirm first |
|---|---|---|
| Veterinary clinic | Scan the puppy, assess illness or injury, and advise on safe temporary care. | Opening hours, handling of unowned animals, fees, and whether an appointment is required. |
| Animal shelter or rescue centre | Scan for a chip and start a stray or found-animal record; staff may know local reclaim procedures. | Whether the facility accepts found puppies, its intake hours, and identification requirements. |
| Animal-control office or dog warden | Scan and explain the legal notice, holding, and handover rules for your jurisdiction. | Which agency covers your address and whether an officer must collect the puppy. |
In the United States, these are the standard first contacts described by veterinary and shelter guidance. In the United Kingdom, government guidance identifies vets, dog wardens, and rescue centres as places that can scan a found dog. Other countries may use different agencies, so contact the authority responsible for stray animals where you found the puppy.

Keep the puppy and yourself safe before scanning
A frightened, painful, or sick puppy can bite or run into traffic. Do not force a collar onto it or carry it into a clinic if you cannot contain it safely.
- Move people, children, and other pets away and provide a quiet, enclosed area if you can do so without chasing the puppy.
- Look from a safe distance for a collar, tag, tattoo, or other visible identification. A tag can reunite the puppy faster than a registry search, but it should not replace scanning.
- Use a carrier, secure box with ventilation, or properly closed vehicle only if the puppy can be placed inside without a struggle. Keep it separate from resident animals until a veterinarian advises otherwise.
- If the puppy is injured, extremely weak, showing breathing trouble, or behaving aggressively, call animal control or a veterinary professional for handling instructions instead of attempting a hands-on examination.
- Note the exact location and time you found it. A photograph and a short description can help the shelter match your report to an owner’s lost-pet notice.
Do not delay emergency veterinary care while trying to locate a chip. A scan can wait until the puppy is stable and staff can work safely.
What a microchip can—and cannot—tell you
A pet microchip is a tiny implanted transponder that returns a numeric identifier when energized by a compatible scanner. It does not transmit continuously, show a location on a map, store a live phone number, or allow you to call the owner directly. The number must be matched to a record held by a registry, shelter, veterinary practice, breeder, or other organization.

Because implantation and registration are separate events, a chipped puppy may have no current owner record. The person who first registered the chip may have moved, surrendered the puppy, or failed to update contact details. Conversely, an apparently unchipped puppy may have a chip that a particular reader misses. Treat the scan as evidence to investigate, not as conclusive proof of ownership or its absence.

How to ask for a reliable scan
At the clinic, shelter, or animal-control office, use clear wording: “Could you use a universal scanner, scan the whole puppy, and repeat the scan?” A universal reader is designed to detect the principal chip frequencies encountered in companion animals. A reader limited to one frequency can miss a chip made for another.
Chips are often implanted between or near the shoulder blades, but they can migrate along the body. Staff should move the reader slowly over the neck, shoulders, chest, sides, back, abdomen, legs, and other areas appropriate for the puppy’s condition. They should repeat passes and check the region around the original implantation site rather than stopping after one beep.
The scanning-procedure guidance updated August 7, 2026, cites a 2008 study of dogs and cats in which no tested scanner achieved perfect sensitivity for every chip brand. That evidence concerns companion animals generally, not found puppies specifically, but it explains why a careful scan with a universal reader is more useful than a single quick pass.
Step-by-step: checking the puppy and following the number
- Contact a scanning location. Call a veterinary clinic, shelter, or animal-control office. Explain that you found a puppy and ask about safe transport, hours, intake procedures, and possible fees.
- Bring identification details. Take the puppy’s found location, date and time, photographs, visible tag information, and your own contact details. Staff may need these for a found-animal report.
- Ask for a universal-reader scan. Remind staff that you want a whole-body scan with repeat passes. Allow them to choose the safest position and restraint; do not hold a distressed puppy against its will.
- Wait for the reader to display a number. If the scanner produces an identifier, ask staff to show you the complete sequence. Confirm every digit, including leading zeroes, and write it down or photograph the display. A transposed digit can lead to the wrong registry.
- Have the number checked in the AAHA tool. The AAHA Universal Pet Microchip Lookup Tool reports participating registries associated with a chip number. It is primarily designed for chips distributed in the United States and is not a worldwide database.
- Contact the listed registry or ask staff to do so. The lookup tool provides contact routes to registries; it does not reveal the owner’s private contact information. The registry or an authorized shelter, clinic, or animal-control officer can handle owner notification under its procedures.
- File a found-pet report. Notify the local shelter or animal-control agency even if you are caring for the puppy temporarily. Provide the scan result, photographs, location found, and your contact details, and ask what holding or handover steps apply.
- Follow the authority’s instructions. Keep written confirmation of your report, the chip number, the registry contacted, and any deadlines. Do not give the puppy to a caller solely on the basis of a photograph or an unverified claim.
What to do when a chip number is found
| Lookup result | What it means | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| A participating registry is listed | The number is associated with a registry that can explain its owner-contact process. | Contact that registry, or ask the scanning facility or animal-control agency to make the report and follow local release rules. |
| Several registries are listed | The chip may have records or forwarding arrangements involving more than one participating database. | Work through each listed contact until an authorized party confirms which record is current. |
| No participating registry appears | The chip may be unregistered, recorded in a nonparticipating database, issued outside the tool’s main US coverage, or entered incorrectly. | Recheck the digits with the scanner operator, ask local shelters and veterinary practices whether they recognize the manufacturer, and still file the found-pet report. |
| The registry cannot reach an owner | Contact information may be outdated, incomplete, or subject to privacy and authorization rules. | Let animal control or the shelter follow its statutory notice and holding process rather than attempting repeated unsolicited contact. |
Do not publish the full chip number on a public post unless the responsible agency tells you to. Keeping one identifying detail private can help officials distinguish the actual owner from someone making a false claim.

What if the scanner says no chip was detected?
A negative scan means only that no chip was detected during that scan. It does not prove that the puppy has never been chipped. Ask whether the reader was universal, whether the entire body was covered, and whether the scan was repeated. If the first facility used a limited reader or performed only one pass, request a second, complete scan at another clinic, shelter, or animal-control office.
Ask staff to check slowly around the shoulder blades and then continue over the rest of the body. Migration, unusual implantation, body size, coat thickness, reader angle, and the chip’s frequency can affect detection. A damaged or poorly functioning chip is another possibility, although only the scanning professional can assess that.
Proceed with a found-animal report even after repeated negative scans. Shelters and animal-control agencies may receive later owner inquiries, compare the puppy with lost-pet reports, or apply a legally required stray hold. Keep the puppy’s found location and photographs available so those records can be matched.

A US example: Miami-Dade County
Miami-Dade County guidance illustrates how specific local rules can be. In the circumstances covered by that county’s rule, a finder must provide notice and have the animal scanned within 72 hours; if a registered owner is identified, the guidance calls for contact within 24 hours. Those are Miami-Dade requirements, not a national US standard. Ask your own county or municipal animal-control agency for the exact reporting, scanning, and holding periods that apply where you found the puppy.
Different rules in the United Kingdom
UK government guidance points finders to vets, dog wardens, and rescue centres for scanning. The responsible local authority and applicable dog-control rules determine what happens after a chip is found. Use the local council or dog warden rather than assuming a US registry or shelter procedure applies.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. While the registry or shelter searches for the owner
Keep the puppy in a warm, escape-proof area away from your animals. Offer water and an age-appropriate meal only if the puppy is alert and able to swallow; a veterinary professional should advise on very young, vomiting, lethargic, or injured puppies. Do not administer human medicines or put topical products on the puppy without veterinary direction.
Ask the shelter or animal-control officer who is legally responsible for the puppy during the search. Some jurisdictions require the finder to transfer custody immediately; others allow temporary care if a report is filed. Get the arrangement in writing, including where the puppy should go, who pays for treatment, and when you must provide an update.

If you post a notice, describe the puppy and general found area but keep one or two identifying details private. Ask a claimant for matching information, such as the puppy’s sex, approximate age, markings, or veterinary records, and arrange any handover through the shelter, clinic, or animal-control agency.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Using a consumer reader as the final answer: Reader compatibility and technique vary. A professional universal scan is the documented route; a home device should not replace a shelter, clinic, or animal-control report.
- Stopping after one pass: Request a complete body scan and repeat passes because a chip can migrate or be missed by a particular reader.
- Treating the number as a phone number: A chip number is an identifier. Use the AAHA lookup tool and the registry’s contact process.
- Assuming AAHA lists every owner: The tool searches participating registries and does not disclose private owner information. It is not a universal worldwide database.
- Skipping the report because you are fostering the puppy: Temporary care does not remove local notice or holding obligations. Report the find and follow the agency’s instructions.
- Promising a free scan everywhere: Many facilities offer free or walk-in scanning, but hours, fees, and intake policies vary. Call ahead when practical.
- Returning the puppy based on an unverified online claim: Let an authorized registry, shelter, or animal-control officer verify ownership and arrange the handover.
Why scanning is worth doing
Microchipping is associated with substantially higher return-to-owner rates when records are usable. The American Veterinary Medical Association, reporting results from Lord and colleagues’ 2009 study of more than 7,700 shelter animals, states that 52.2% of microchipped dogs were returned to their owners compared with 21.9% of dogs without microchips. Those figures describe the study population and do not guarantee that every chipped puppy will be reunited, especially when registration details are missing or outdated.
The practical sequence is therefore simple but important: obtain a competent scan, verify every digit, search participating registries, notify the local authority, and follow the local holding and release rules. A negative result calls for a better scan and a report, not an assumption that no owner exists.
