Take the kitten to a veterinary clinic, animal shelter, or animal-control agency and ask for a complete scan with a universal microchip scanner. If a chip is found, use its number to identify the registry, which can contact the owner or help connect you. Also check for visible ID and follow your local shelter’s found-animal process.

What to do first if you found a kitten outside

Before moving apparently healthy kittens, consider that their mother may be nearby. She may be looking for food or waiting for people to leave. ASPCA guidance recommends observing from a distance: clean, plump, quiet kittens can be left where they are while you check periodically over the next few hours for the mother’s return. If they must be moved for safety, move them only a short distance to a safer spot where she can still find them. Read ASPCA guidance on found kittens.

  • Dirty, skinny, or persistently crying kittens may need help from a rescue, shelter, or veterinary professional.
  • If a kitten appears ill or injured, call a local shelter, rescue, or veterinary clinic before going. Confirm that it is open and able to receive the kitten.

How do I check a kitten for a microchip?

Look for a collar and ID tag, then arrange a scan at a veterinary clinic, shelter, rescue, or animal-control agency. These organizations commonly scan found animals. Ask the operator to use a universal scanner and scan the kitten’s whole body, not just the area between the shoulder blades. Chips are usually implanted near the shoulder blades but can move from their original position.

A first scan can miss a chip. Movement, long or matted hair near the chip, excess fat around the implantation area, or a metal collar can interfere with detection. Some older or limited scanners also read fewer chip types. If no number appears, ask whether a universal scanner and a complete second pass are possible. The American Veterinary Medical Association explains scanning and chip detection in its microchipping FAQ.

Where can I take a kitten to get scanned?

Call a nearby veterinary clinic, animal shelter, rescue, or animal-control agency and ask whether it can scan the kitten. A scan is generally handled by one of these organizations; you do not need to buy a scanner or other product to look up an owner. If the kitten is sick or hurt, call first to confirm the facility can accept it.

How do I find the owner from a kitten’s microchip number?

  1. Write down the complete number. Copy it exactly as the scanner displays it and ask the operator to confirm the reading.
  2. Look up the number. Enter it in the AAHA Microchip Registry Lookup Tool, or ask the clinic or shelter to identify the registry associated with the number.
  3. Contact the registry. The lookup tool routes you to registry information; it does not reveal the owner’s contact details or let you change the owner’s record. The registry can contact the owner or help facilitate communication.

A chip is a passive identification device, not a GPS tracker. It is activated by a scanner and ordinarily returns a unique ID number—not the owner’s name, address, or phone number. Finding a number therefore does not guarantee contact: the number needs to be linked to registry information, and that information must be current. The U.S. does not have one centralized microchip registry.

Universal scanners can read the commonly used U.S. chip frequencies. The AVMA identifies 134.2 kHz and 125 kHz as commonly used, with 128 kHz used less often; older readers may cover fewer frequencies. This is another reason to ask for a universal scan if the first attempt finds nothing.

What else should I do to find the kitten’s owner?

Post a clear photo and descriptive details on signs near where the kitten was found, and contact the local shelter for its found-pet reporting process. Ask whether the kitten should be brought to a designated facility and whether you need to notify animal control or submit a report. ASPCA advises checking local laws; requirements, intake procedures, and any holding period vary by location, so confirm them with your municipal animal-control agency or local shelter rather than assuming one rule applies everywhere. See ASPCA guidance on reporting and lost-pet steps.
