Before buying a ticket, confirm that your pet is eligible and has a reserved place on every flight segment—not just that you have a passenger booking. Check the airline operating each leg, its current pet fees and carrier rules, the aircraft and seat, and the entry requirements for your destination. Airline policies differ, and a partner-operated flight may follow the operating carrier’s rules.
1. Find the airline operating every flight
Open your itinerary and note the operating airline for each segment. The airline whose code appears on your ticket may not be the airline flying the plane; look for “Operated by” on the ticket. American Airlines says passengers traveling on multiple airlines must check in with each airline and pay its fees. American Airlines’ pet policy explains its partner-flight arrangements.
Make a list of the operating carriers and flight numbers, including connections. Check each carrier’s pet policy rather than assuming the ticketing airline’s rules apply throughout.
2. Check whether your pet and route are eligible
On each operating airline’s official pet page, check accepted species, age and health limits, route restrictions, cabin and cargo options, weather rules, and any prohibited cabins or seats. Then check the destination and any transit country’s official animal-entry requirements. For international trips, entry rules may call for health certificates or quarantine. U.S. Department of Transportation guidance also notes that airline policies may limit animals by species, size, age, behavior, weather exposure, seating, or kennel type. DOT’s “Flying with a Pet” guidance covers these considerations.

Rules can be specific to one airline and route. For example, American’s policy excludes carry-on pets on trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific trips and lists additional South America restrictions. These are American-specific rules, not industry-wide restrictions. If your pet cannot travel in the cabin, ask the carrier whether another option is available for your route and animal.
3. Confirm cabin space and reserve the pet on every segment
Many airlines limit the number of pets permitted in the cabin, so a passenger ticket by itself does not reserve a pet space. Ask each operating carrier whether space is available on every flight, follow its reservation process, and get confirmation for each segment before treating the itinerary as settled.

- Delta: Cabin pet travel is first-come, first-served and subject to a flight limit. Delta asks customers with a passenger reservation to contact Reservations as soon as possible and provide kennel dimensions. See Delta’s Pet Travel Overview.
- Alaska: Its published process is to review the policy, book the passenger ticket, then start a chat or call to reserve pet space. Cabin and baggage-compartment space is subject to availability. See Alaska’s pet travel policy.
- American: Its current self-service instructions are to find the trip on aa.com or in the app, choose “Add carry-on pets” under Additional Services, select the flights, and confirm. The airline directs travelers to the airport ticket counter to pay and ensure the pet and kennel meet requirements. See American’s pet policy.
These are carrier-specific examples, not a universal booking sequence. If you cannot see a clear confirmation that your pet is added, contact the operating airline directly. The FAA notes that airlines set their own pet procedures and may limit the number of animals allowed in the cabin. FAA’s “Flying with Pets” guidance distinguishes pets from trained service animals.
4. Work out the total pet fee for the itinerary
Check each airline’s current optional-fee page or ask the operating carrier. DOT says U.S. and foreign carriers marketing to U.S. consumers must maintain a page disclosing optional service fees, including pet fees. Ask whether the charge is one-way or round-trip, per animal or per carrier, and whether connections or a stopover add a charge. Also ask which airline collects the fee on partner-operated segments.

As one carrier-specific example, Alaska’s published guidance accessed October 4, 2026, lists fees of $100 to $200 per way, per kennel or carrier, depending on travel type and route. The range applies to Alaska- or Hawaiian-operated travel; partner-carrier fees may also apply. It is not a general estimate for other airlines. Check Alaska’s current policy and fees.
American says it does not collect pet fees for other operating airlines on an itinerary, even when the flight has an American flight number. Its policy directs customers to check in with each airline and pay that airline’s fees; charges may apply by connection segment under the terms shown on its page. Check American’s current policy.

5. Match the carrier and seat to the actual aircraft
Measure the carrier using the operating airline’s instructions, then verify that it fits beneath the seat on the aircraft assigned to each segment. Check whether the carrier counts toward your cabin-baggage allowance and whether your selected seat is allowed. Aircraft and seat restrictions matter as much as the carrier’s stated dimensions.
- American: Lists 18 × 11 × 11 inches as a recommended soft-sided carry-on carrier size, but publishes different hard-sided limits for mainline and Eagle flights and additional aircraft and cabin limits. A non-collapsible kennel cannot exceed the under-seat dimensions on the aircraft used for the journey; a collapsible soft-sided kennel must still fit without excessive compression. See American’s carrier and seating requirements.
- Delta: Recommends a soft-sided kennel no larger than 18 × 11 × 11 inches because it fits most of its aircraft. “Most” does not mean every aircraft: under-seat space varies, so check the aircraft-specific dimensions. See Delta’s aircraft-fit guidance.
Bulkhead and exit-row seats may be restricted because of safety requirements or because they lack suitable under-seat stowage. Verify the carrier’s cabin and seat rules before choosing or paying for a seat. A soft-sided airline pet carrier is not automatically accepted just because its advertised measurements match a recommendation; fit depends on the airline, aircraft, and seat.
6. Recheck paperwork and travel-day requirements
Confirm the airline’s current paperwork rules and the animal-entry requirements for the destination and transit countries. Depending on the airline and route, a health record or certificate may be required; an international destination may impose additional certificates or quarantine. The FAA also notes airlines can set requirements for containers, behavior, animal types, and cabin counts. DOT’s pet-travel guidance and FAA’s guidance provide U.S.-market context; the airline and destination authorities determine the rules that apply to your trip.
For U.S.-market trips, DOT’s guidance was last updated September 26, 2025, and the FAA’s was last updated December 4, 2025. Policies and requirements can change, so check the official airline and government pages again shortly before departure. Optional items such as an absorbent carrier pad or collapsible water bowl may help you prepare, but they are not universal airline requirements.
