To check a cat’s microchip, first get its ID number—ask a veterinarian or animal shelter to scan the cat if you do not have the number—then enter it in the AAHA Universal Pet Microchip Lookup. The lookup points to participating registries that may have a record; it does not show the owner’s personal information. Contact the listed registry so it can verify the record or handle contact with the owner.

How to check a cat’s microchip registration

  1. Get the microchip number. Check adoption and veterinary paperwork first. If the number is not available, ask a veterinary clinic or animal shelter to scan the cat. The chip contains an identification number; owner contact details are kept by a registry.
  2. Search the number in AAHA’s lookup. Enter the 9-, 10-, or 15-digit ID without spaces or punctuation. The tool checks participating recovery-service databases and returns registry contact information. When applicable, the most recently updated registry appears first.
  3. Contact the registry shown. The registry—not AAHA—is the place to ask about a record, correct your own contact details, or arrange contact with an owner if you found the cat.
  4. Use local animal-care services if you need help. A veterinarian, shelter, or animal control agency can scan a found cat. Follow local procedures for found animals, too.

What the lookup results mean

A registry appears

You have a service to contact, not confirmation that the owner’s address or phone number is current. The registry can verify the record and handle owner contact.

Several registries appear

Some microchip IDs, including some that begin with “900,” may be associated with more than one possible service. Contact the listed registries, starting with the most recently updated listing when one is identified.

A manufacturer or distributor appears

The chip may have been implanted without a pet-specific registration. AAHA says you can contact the listed company and ask whether purchaser “trackback” may help reach the owner. This is a possible lead, not a guarantee.

The search fails

A failed search can mean a registry could not be checked, including because of a temporary problem. Try again later; a technical failure does not prove the chip is unregistered.

No pet-specific registration is found

Ask the suggested manufacturer or distributor about next steps, and seek help from the veterinarian or shelter that scanned the cat. AAHA searches participating services, so no match is not proof that no record exists anywhere.

Why doesn’t the tool show the pet owner’s information?

The microchip itself stores an ID number, not the owner’s contact details. A registry maintains that information, and AAHA’s lookup is designed to identify participating registry contacts rather than disclose personal information. A scanner can retrieve the ID, but cannot by itself establish registration status or identify the owner. The registry must follow up.

What to do if you found the cat—and if it is your cat

If you found the cat

  • Have a veterinary clinic or shelter scan the cat if you do not already have its ID.
  • Use the AAHA lookup and contact the registry or registries it identifies.
  • Let the registry handle owner contact, and follow local found-animal procedures.

If you are checking your own cat

  • Use the lookup to find the registry associated with the chip.
  • Contact that registry to confirm and update your contact details. AAHA does not manage registrations or edit owner records.
  • Ask your veterinarian to scan the chip during routine care so you can confirm the ID matches your records.

AAHA quotes Tom Sharp, president and CEO of AKC Reunite: “If the microchip is not enrolled, it’s like having a Social Security card with no name on it.”

Where the AAHA lookup applies

AAHA describes the 15-digit pet microchip as the international standard, while noting that U.S. companies use multiple technologies, frequencies, and databases. Its lookup primarily serves chips distributed in the United States and searches participating services; it is a registry locator, not a universal worldwide database. If you are outside the United States, ask a local veterinarian or shelter which registry lookup and found-animal process applies.
