To tell whether your cat has a double coat, gently part the fur down to the skin. Look for a soft, fine or downy undercoat beneath the more prominent outer guard hairs. Fur length and shedding can offer clues, but neither confirms coat type on its own.
What a double coat looks and feels like
A double coat has two layers: longer, more prominent outer guard hairs and a softer, finer undercoat close to the skin. Many cats have both layers, but the amount and texture of undercoat vary. A fluffy appearance alone is not enough to identify one.

Short-haired cats can have an undercoat, too. VCA describes domestic short-haired cats as having guard hairs over a fine insulating undercoat, while some other coat types have sparser undercoats. VCA’s overview of healthy cat coats explains this variation.

1. Use breed information as a clue
If your cat is a known purebred, its breed description may mention coat characteristics. Treat that as context, not a definitive answer: coats vary, and appearance or presumed ancestry alone cannot reliably classify a mixed-breed cat. TICA breed standards and VCA’s coat guide describe coat types, but the individual cat’s coat is what you need to inspect.

2. Part the fur and check near the skin
- Choose a calm moment and gently separate the fur with your fingers.
- Part it down to the skin in a few places, rather than judging only the surface.
- Look and feel for a soft, fine or downy layer beneath the longer or more noticeable guard hairs.
A soft layer under the guard hairs supports the conclusion that your cat has an undercoat. VCA’s grooming and coat-care guidance describes the layers, and The International Cat Association’s grooming guidance distinguishes primary guard hairs from a downy undercoat.
3. Treat shedding as supporting evidence only
Some cats shed more when the seasons change, and loose undercoat may come away in clumps. But many indoor cats shed at low levels throughout the year. Hair growth and shedding are also influenced by season, temperature, sunlight and genetics, so shedding by itself cannot establish whether a cat has a double coat. 4. Ask a veterinarian or experienced cat groomer
If you cannot tell by parting the coat, a veterinary team or experienced cat groomer can assess it and suggest appropriate grooming. Contact a veterinarian if you notice bald spots, persistent excessive shedding, itching, redness, scaling or other changes to the skin or coat. Those signs need an assessment; coat appearance alone cannot identify the cause. Choose grooming tools by coat, not by the label
Regular brushing can benefit cats with hair, but the tool should suit the individual coat and be used gently. VCA describes stiff-bristle brushes for short coats or sparse undercoats, and long-toothed metal combs for removing loose hair or smoothing minor tangles in medium- and long-haired coats. A long-toothed metal cat comb may be useful for gently checking or grooming some longer coats; it is not a test for double-coat status and not every cat needs one. Ask your veterinary team which tool fits your cat.

Do not pull hard at tangles. For severe or extensive mats, seek help from a groomer or veterinarian; scissors can cut a cat’s skin when used to remove mats. VCA’s coat-care recommendations cover gentle grooming and when to get professional help.

What your check can—and cannot—tell you
- A soft, fine layer under the guard hairs is the key sign of an undercoat.
- Short fur does not rule out an undercoat.
- Breed and shedding provide context, not a diagnosis of coat type.
- A coat check cannot explain bald patches, inflammation, persistent itching or other skin changes; those warrant veterinary advice.
