How to Choose a Camera Trap for Wildlife Monitoring

The right wildlife camera trap depends on what you need to observe and where it will be deployed. Compare detection performance, flash, recording mode and field logistics, then pilot and standardize the setup.

Choose a camera trap by matching it to the species, habitat, survey method and time you need to leave it deployed—not by choosing the highest megapixel count. Prioritize reliable detection and usable images at your planned camera position, then compare trigger speed, illumination, recording mode, battery and storage needs, weather protection and security. Test the setup in the field before scaling up, and keep equipment and settings consistent when comparing sites or time periods.

Start with the question your survey must answer

First decide what you need the camera data to show. A species inventory, detection survey, capture-recapture study that identifies individuals, movement study and random encounter method do not necessarily call for the same camera or settings. The target animal’s size, speed and route, whether day and night observations matter, and whether you need to identify individuals all affect the choice.

WWF’s camera-trapping guidance recommends choosing features for the study’s specific aims, animal and context rather than treating one model as best for every job. Its camera-choice guidance describes a mid- to high-end infrared unit with a large detection zone and fast trigger speed as a broad starting point for many research and monitoring applications, not a universal specification.

Will the camera detect the animal where you plan to place it?

A camera’s advertised detection distance does not tell you by itself whether it will capture a useful image. Passive infrared (PIR) sensors detect movement and heat contrast; performance depends on the animal and its route as well as the sensor. Consider body size and speed, distance from the camera, approach angle, camera height and whether the detection zone covers the part of the frame where you need the animal to appear.

Trigger speed is the time between motion detection and image capture. A fast animal crossing a trail may leave the frame before a slower camera takes a picture; recovery time also affects how quickly a camera can record another event. Aim the camera at the likely approach and test the detection zone at the planned height and distance rather than relying on a headline specification.

A field study by Palencia and colleagues compared 45 cameras—nine devices of each of five makes, Bushnell, KeepGuard, Ltl Acorn, Reconyx and Scoutguard—against continuous remote video used as a reference. Detection probability varied significantly with period, distance, camera model, species, deployment height and activation sensitivity. The results support testing the actual target and placement; they do not establish a universally superior model. Choose flash and recording mode for the method

Illumination and recording settings affect image usefulness, disturbance, battery life, storage and the volume of material to review. Make these choices in light of the survey method, not just the camera’s feature list.

Choice Useful when Trade-off to consider
Infrared flash You want to limit visible illumination for night monitoring. Some infrared systems may still emit visible light; do not assume every system is entirely invisible to wildlife or people.
White flash Color night images may help with identification, including in some capture-recapture work. The flash is noticeable and may startle wildlife or people. Behavioral effects should be considered.
Still images or bursts You need photographs or a sequence of images while managing storage and review workload. Set burst count and delay to suit the animal and survey; extra images increase storage and review needs.
Video or near-video You need behavior or a method requiring more continuous encounter information. WWF identifies video or near-video as an option for random encounter modelling. Video uses more battery and storage than still images, according to WWF’s guidance.
Time-lapse You need observations at scheduled intervals, including when motion does not trigger the camera. Whether it can operate alongside motion-triggered recording depends on the camera model.

These are method-dependent choices, not guarantees about how an animal will respond. The University of Florida IFAS Extension explains the visible-flash and infrared trade-offs in its camera-trapping guidance. For example, New Zealand’s Department of Conservation recommends 940 nm “black” or “no glo” flash for its deer and goat monitoring context because other flash types may alter behavior, while noting uncertainty about effects on visitation rates. That recommendation is specific to its context, not a rule for all species or studies; consult its deer and goat camera-trap guidance.

Plan power, storage and site logistics before buying

Estimate how many triggers you expect and how long cameras will remain in place. Those two factors, together with whether you record stills or video, determine how much battery and storage capacity the deployment needs. Check the camera manual before choosing accessories: battery types, external power connections and memory-card compatibility vary by model.

  • Deployment duration and access: Decide how often you can visit remote cameras to replace batteries, retrieve cards and check operation.
  • Climate and exposure: Confirm that the camera is suitable for expected temperature, moisture and other site conditions; a rating should be checked against the conditions you actually expect.
  • Mounting: Choose a stable bracket or mount that holds the intended position and framing.
  • Loss or damage: Consider theft and site damage when deciding whether security hardware is needed.
  • Whole-deployment burden: Account for compatible cards, batteries or external power, mounts, security equipment, maintenance visits and the work of managing images—not just the camera itself.

New Zealand DOC’s deer and goat guidance offers context-specific examples of operational settings, battery choices and stable brackets; treat them as examples for that monitoring context rather than universal requirements. A broader workflow matters too: China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment lists HJ 710.15—2023, with an implementation date of April 1, 2024, as covering preparation, placement, installation, inspection and maintenance, data storage and organization, analysis and sharing, quality control and safety. Keep comparable surveys comparable

If you are comparing sites or time periods, use the same camera model and settings across comparable survey units where feasible. Differences in equipment or configuration can affect detection probability and complicate interpretation. Record enough information to distinguish a biological change from a setup change.

Pilot the full setup before a large deployment

Test the camera in representative habitat and conditions, using a target-sized movement along the likely route at the planned distance and height. Review both whether the camera triggers and whether its images are usable for the intended identification or analysis. Check night illumination, framing, delay, storage and power assumptions as part of the same pilot. Adjust placement or settings and test again before committing to a larger survey.

This is more informative than relying on a single advertised detection distance or resolution figure. A camera that takes high-resolution images is not necessarily the better research choice if it misses the target, frames it poorly or cannot operate for the required deployment period.
