There is no established ideal length, width, or height for a household cat-enrichment box; the best fit depends on your cat, the box’s purpose, and how easily your cat can get in and out.
How to choose the right size
Use your cat’s movements—not a standard measurement—as the fit test. The box should leave enough room to enter, turn, and settle without becoming so open that it stops feeling like a sheltered spot. These are practical selection criteria, not a published dimensional standard; the AAFP and ISFM feline environmental needs guidelines describe what a safe place should do rather than giving box dimensions.

- For hiding or resting: prioritize a roofed, enclosed feel and an entrance your cat can reach easily.
- For play and exploration: choose a box the cat can enter and investigate comfortably, and keep the space around it clear.
- For scratching: a flattened piece of cardboard may suit a cat that already prefers horizontal scratching.
Set up a box as a hideaway
Turn the box on its side so it has a roof and an accessible entrance. AAFP and ISFM specifically recommend this arrangement as a safe place for a cat facing a perceived threat. Hiding can help cats cope with stress or avoid people and other animals, so let your cat choose whether to use the box rather than placing the cat inside.

Make access work for your cat and household
Kittens and cats with limited mobility
Choose a low box or make its entrance reachable without a difficult jump. The AAFP/ISFM guidelines recommend that boxes and perches be low or accessible by ramps for kittens and older cats with limited mobility. Watch how your cat approaches the opening; if getting in or out looks awkward, choose a more accessible setup.
Homes with more than one cat
The guidelines recommend at least as many safe places sized for one cat as there are cats, with the safe places separated from one another. When possible, give a hideaway more than one entry so another cat cannot easily block the only way in or out.

Use cardboard for optional play and scratching
Cardboard can provide more than a hiding spot. Cornell’s Feline Health Center says cardboard boxes can entertain cats; appropriate toys and play can encourage exercise and cognitive enrichment through activities such as stalking, pouncing, and problem solving. A box may invite exploration or peek-and-pounce play, but each cat will respond differently.
If your cat scratches horizontal surfaces, try a flattened piece of cardboard. Cornell’s guidance on destructive scratching behavior recommends matching the scratching surface to the cat’s observed preference. It is an option to try, not a promise that every cat will use cardboard.

When interest fades, rotate the play objects available to your cat; Cornell notes that rotating toys can help prevent boredom. The Cornell Feline Health Center sums up the low-cost appeal in its safe toys and gifts guidance: “paper bags, cardboard boxes, and ping pong balls can be tremendously entertaining for cats, so you need not break the bank to satisfy your feline friend.”

Check the surrounding area before encouraging energetic play. Cornell advises avoiding toys with small detachable pieces, ingestible linear parts such as string, and chewable electrical cords. Move heavy objects that could fall, and prevent access to places from which a distracted cat could fall. As sensible household care, stop using a box if it becomes damaged or unstable; the reviewed guidance does not prescribe a box-inspection schedule.
