Start with your household’s time, housing, budget, and caregiving capacity—not a cat’s appearance or breed. Then ask shelter or rescue staff what they have observed, meet the cat when possible, and plan for a gradual adjustment. No age, breed, or brief meeting can guarantee compatibility.
1. Start with your household’s capacity
Before browsing cats, work out who will handle daily care and whether your home can support it. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) recommends considering your family, home, lifestyle, available time, travel, housing, grooming, veterinary care, allergies, and resident pets in its Selecting a Cat brochure.

- Daily care: Decide who will feed the cat, clean the litter box, play with and groom it, and arrange care during travel or emergencies. Adults should own the responsibility, even when children help.
- Home and housing: Check lease or housing rules, available space, and how the household’s noise and activity might affect a cat.
- People: Consider allergies and whether everyone can tolerate ordinary cat behavior. Think about children’s ages and whether they can follow boundaries.
- Other animals: Consider whether you can make space for an initial separation and slow, supervised introductions.
- Time and money: Account for routine care as well as unexpected veterinary needs and care during absences.
The AVMA’s brochure warns, “The primary reason cats are given up to animal shelters is unfulfilled expectations, so make an informed decision.” A realistic assessment now can help prevent a mismatch later.
2. Decide whether a kitten or an adult cat suits your routine
Ask yourself, “Should you get a kitten, or an adult cat?” The answer depends on the time and supervision your household can provide, as well as the individual cat—not age alone.

| Consideration | Kitten | Adult cat |
|---|---|---|
| Time and supervision | Needs extra supervision and socialization. | May suit a family that cannot provide the additional time a kitten needs. |
| Feeding and training | Typically needs more frequent feeding and litter training. | May already have an established routine. |
| Behavior information | Behavior is still developing. | Staff may have observations about the cat’s behavior and needs. |
| What age does not tell you | Not every kitten has the same demands or temperament. | Not every adult cat is calm or suited to every household. |
Think about which care demands fit your schedule, then ask about the particular cat’s activity, sociability, and history. An adult cat’s established routine can offer useful information, but it is not a promise of a particular personality.
3. Look for an individual match, not a breed shortcut
There is no reliable guarantee of family compatibility from breed, appearance, or age alone. Compare what is known about the individual cat with what your home can offer:
- How social or active the cat seems, based on staff observations.
- Known responses to children, visitors, handling, and other animals.
- Health, grooming, or other care needs your family is prepared to manage.
- Whether the cat’s apparent needs fit your daily routine and home environment.
A short meeting can help you observe the cat, but it cannot establish exactly how the cat will behave after moving into a new home.

4. Ask shelter or rescue staff specific questions
Animal bios can describe personality and unique needs, but ask staff for context as well. The ASPCA’s adoption guidance recommends asking about health and behavior and letting the whole family meet the animal where possible.
- What have you observed about this cat’s response to children, visitors, handling, and other animals?
- What is known about the cat’s health history, current medications, and veterinary care?
- How active and social does this cat seem, and what kind of home appears to suit it?
- What support or follow-up is available if the cat needs time to adjust?
- If we have resident pets, what introduction plan do you recommend?
Observed behavior and available history are useful clues, not guarantees. A cat may respond differently in a new home, so use staff guidance alongside your own household’s needs.
5. Use visible health signs as a first screen
The AVMA describes a healthy-looking cat as active and inquisitive, with clear, bright eyes and a clean, shiny coat. Nasal discharge and diarrhea are examples of signs that warrant attention. These observations can help you ask informed questions, but appearance is not a diagnosis and cannot replace a veterinary assessment.

6. Let children meet the cat with an adult present
When possible, have the whole family meet the cat before adoption. An adult should supervise children’s interactions and remain responsible for care. Consider whether the children can respect the cat’s boundaries and whether the cat’s observed responses to children seem like a workable fit. One meeting is only a snapshot; it does not predict every interaction at home.
7. Prepare for a gradual introduction and adjustment
Do not expect an instant bond or force contact. Give the cat a quiet, safe initial area and time to adjust. If you have resident pets, follow a slow, supervised introduction plan and keep the animals separated at first. Ask shelter or rescue staff for advice suited to the animals and your home; the AVMA also advises slow, supervised introductions to resident pets.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Plan for routine and unexpected costs
Build a realistic budget for food, preventive and emergency veterinary care, grooming, and boarding or other care during travel. The ASPCA’s general cat-care resource notes that diet depends on a cat’s age, activity level, and health, so ask a veterinarian for individual food guidance rather than choosing a diet from age or appearance alone.
Pet health insurance is an option to investigate, not a guarantee that every expense will be covered. Compare policy terms, waiting periods, and exclusions, including how pre-existing conditions are handled. The AVMA says insurance may help defray unexpected costs; the ASPCA notes that waiting periods and pre-existing-condition exclusions may apply.

What adoption research can—and cannot—tell you
In an April 18, 2012 release, the ASPCA reported results from a study of nearly 1,500 adopters at five U.S. animal-welfare organizations. The study took place from January through May 2011. More than 26% of cat adopters named behavior with people as their most important reason for choosing a cat; among adult-cat adopters, 30% named that factor. Nearly 90% of adopters said health information was important, while roughly 80% considered behavior information important and roughly 60% considered information about the animal’s life before shelter entry important.
These figures describe adopters at the five participating organizations during that study period; they should not be treated as current or nationally representative rates. They do illustrate why asking about behavior and health history can be useful when considering a specific cat.
