Choose a flea and tick treatment only after confirming that its current label covers your pet’s species, age, and weight—and that its warnings fit your pet’s health and medications. Ask your veterinarian before treating a pet that is sick, older, pregnant or nursing, taking medication, or has reacted to a product before. U.S. FDA and EPA guidance applies here; rules may differ elsewhere.

How to choose a flea and tick treatment for your pet’s age, weight, and health

Work through the product’s exact label and your pet’s circumstances before applying or giving a treatment. FDA and EPA guidance emphasizes following label directions; FDA strongly recommends involving a veterinarian, especially when a pet has health conditions. See the EPA’s pet safety guidance and the FDA’s safe-use guidance.

1. Confirm the species

Use only a product whose label explicitly permits use on the animal you are treating. Dog and cat products are not interchangeable: some pesticides are more toxic to one species than another. EPA says, “Never apply dog products to cats, and visa versa, as some pesticides are more toxic to one species than another.” Check the label rather than relying on a product name, appearance, or past experience.

2. Check both age and weight

Find the product’s minimum age and permitted weight range, then verify that your pet meets both. Limits vary by product and formulation, so an age or weight threshold on one package does not apply to another. If your pet is near a weight-band boundary, weigh them and ask your veterinarian or pharmacist how to select the labeled dose; do not estimate or split doses unless the label or a veterinary professional directs you to.

For example, on June 10, 2026, FDA announced approval of generic nitenpyram tablets for treating flea infestations in dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens at least four weeks old and weighing at least two pounds, with dosage based on weight. Those thresholds apply to the specific product described in the FDA announcement; they are not general minimums for flea and tick treatments.

3. Match the label to health and medicines

Before choosing a product, consult your veterinarian if your pet is weak, older, ill, pregnant or nursing, takes medicines or other pest-control products, or has previously shown sensitivity. Tell the veterinarian what the pet has used and about any recent health or medication changes. Previous tolerance does not establish that a product is suitable now.

4. Check what it treats and how it is used

Flea and tick products come as topical spot-ons, collars, shampoos, sprays, dips and powders, as well as oral pills or chews and some injectables. Compare the specific product’s permitted species and life stages, weight band, target pests, route, application instructions, interval, and health warnings. Follow its directions for avoiding exposure to children or other pets. No format is established as best for every animal; the right choice depends on the pet and the particular label.

Is this flea and tick treatment safe for my puppy or kitten?

It is suitable only if the exact product label allows use for that species and life stage and your young pet meets its age and weight requirements. Do not assume a product is appropriate because it is sold for pets, because an adult animal uses it, or because another brand has a lower minimum age.

If your pet is too young for labeled products

For puppies and kittens too young for a labeled treatment, FDA recommends using a flea comb to remove fleas and eggs and a tick remover for ticks while seeking veterinary advice about an appropriate plan. These are interim measures, not a substitute for an individualized assessment. See the FDA’s guidance for young pets.

What do FDA and EPA labels tell you?

In the United States, FDA generally regulates oral and injectable flea and tick products as animal drugs, while EPA generally regulates topical products such as shampoos, collars, powders, sprays, and spot-ons as pesticides. An FDA-approved drug label includes a six-digit NADA or ANADA number; an EPA-registered pesticide label includes an EPA Registration Number. These identifiers help distinguish regulated products, but the package label remains the place to check permitted species, life stage, weight, directions, and warnings. Learn more from FDA’s overview of regulation.

Counterfeit pet pesticides are a recognized concern. Buy from a reliable source, verify the packaging and product, and keep the box or insert after use so you can refer to the directions and product details if a problem occurs. FDA advises reading the label and package insert every time, even if you have used the product before.

What should I know about isoxazoline products?

FDA considers isoxazoline products safe and effective for dogs and cats, while warning that they may be associated with neurologic adverse events, including muscle tremors, ataxia (loss of coordination), and seizures. Seizures have been reported in pets without a prior seizure history. The class includes products for both dogs and cats, but species and approved uses vary by individual product. Discuss your pet’s medical history with a veterinarian and check the specific label; FDA’s isoxazoline fact sheet explains the warning.

Why choosing carefully matters

Fleas can cause flea allergy dermatitis, and severe infestations can lead to anemia. Ticks can transmit infections to pets and may be carried into the home. These risks make parasite control important, but they do not identify one treatment as best for every pet. Choose based on the label and your animal’s circumstances, with veterinary help when needed. See the FDA’s consumer guidance.

What to do if you suspect a reaction

  1. Contact your veterinarian promptly. Explain what product was used, when and how it was applied or given, and what signs you have noticed.
  2. Keep the packaging and insert. They identify the product and its ingredients and provide label directions.
  3. Follow the label’s reporting instructions. The appropriate reporting route depends on the product; FDA describes how to report problems in its safe-use guidance.
