To choose a healthy kitten, ask for its available medical and behavior history, observe its general condition, and make sure its needs suit your household. Ask a shelter, rescue, or breeder what care has been provided, what is known or uncertain, and what support is available after placement. If you choose a breeder, visit where the kittens are raised and review the written agreement. Arrange a veterinary exam soon after bringing the kitten home.
How do I know if a kitten is healthy?
Start with what you can observe, but treat it as an initial screen rather than a diagnosis. The American Veterinary Medical Association’s Selecting a Cat brochure identifies clear, bright eyes and a clean, shiny coat as signs of a healthy cat. Ask the person caring for the kitten to explain any symptoms, treatment, or other concerns you notice. A brief visit cannot establish that a kitten is free of health problems; a veterinarian should assess it after placement.

What should I ask a shelter or rescue before adopting?
Ask staff to distinguish what they have observed or documented from what is unknown. Shelter histories and practices vary, so the answers for one kitten may be more complete than for another.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- What do you know about this kitten’s health, behavior, and background?
- What examinations, vaccinations, parasite treatments, or other care have been completed? Can I have copies of the available records?
- Has the kitten shown symptoms or received treatment? Is anything expected to need follow-up with my veterinarian?
- How does the kitten respond to handling, people, other animals, and ordinary household activity? What is known, and what has not been assessed?
- What do you know about its energy, socialization, litter-box habits, and care needs?
- What support can I contact after adoption if a health or adjustment question comes up?
The ASPCA describes adoption as a conversation to help match an adopter with an animal. A disclosed health or behavior condition does not by itself mean the kitten is a poor fit: clarify what is known, what treatment is underway, and what care may be involved. Practices and available histories differ by organization. See the ASPCA position on animal-shelter responsibilities.

What should I ask a breeder before getting a kitten?
Ask to visit the place where the kittens are raised, meet the litter and, if possible, the mother, and see how the animals live. The ASPCA’s responsible-breeding criteria focus mainly on dogs and state that they have some application to cats; use these questions as prudent screening, not as a cat-specific legal or universal industry standard.
- Can I visit where the kittens are raised and meet the litter and mother? How are the kittens cared for and socialized day to day?
- What health and vaccination information is available for this kitten and its parents? Are there known inherited or ongoing health concerns relevant to this cat?
- What veterinary examinations and treatments has the kitten received? May I review the written records?
- How would you describe this kitten’s temperament, and what kind of home might suit it?
- What does the written agreement say about health representations, each party’s responsibilities, and return or rehoming if the placement does not work?
- Will you be available for questions after placement?
The ASPCA’s responsible-breeding criteria support transparency about living conditions, records, written terms, matching, and ongoing support. Their partial application to cats is a reason to treat them as useful screening principles rather than a guarantee that every breeder follows the same standard.

What records should come with a kitten?
Request the records the provider has, rather than assuming a particular set will exist. Useful documents may include information on veterinary examinations, vaccinations, parasite treatment, and other care already provided. Ask the provider to explain any gaps or recommended follow-up, and bring the available records to your veterinarian. The veterinarian can recommend next steps based on the kitten’s age and history.

How should I compare a shelter, rescue, and breeder?
Compare the individual kitten and provider on the same practical points. No source can be assumed to have a complete history or offer identical support, so ask what is actually available.

| What to compare | Questions to consider |
|---|---|
| Health and behavior history | What records and observations are available? What remains unknown? |
| Access and context | Can you see the kitten in its living environment and meet other relevant cats, such as its mother? |
| Known needs | Are symptoms, treatments, care needs, or uncertainties explained candidly? |
| Household fit | Do the kitten’s known temperament and care needs fit your home and the time you can provide? |
| After-placement support | Who can answer questions, and what do written terms say about return or rehoming? |
These comparison points draw on the ASPCA’s shelter guidance and responsible-breeding criteria; they are not claims that all providers offer the same information or guarantees.
When should I pause before choosing?
Pause if a provider will not answer reasonable questions, share available records, or discuss known concerns, or if you are pressured to decide immediately. Ask for time to review the information and seek veterinary advice or another source. For a breeder, being able to see the living conditions is part of the transparency screening supported by the ASPCA criteria.

What if I found a kitten outdoors?
Finding a kitten outside is different from choosing among kittens already in a shelter or breeder’s care. A mother cat may be nearby; the ASPCA advises monitoring when it is safe rather than assuming the kitten has been abandoned. If the kitten seems ill or injured, contact a local shelter, rescue, or veterinary clinic promptly. Before arranging a new home, check whether it may have an owner and ask a shelter or clinic to scan for a microchip. See the ASPCA guidance on found kittens.
Can my household meet a kitten’s needs?
Include time and supervision in your decision, not just the kitten’s health history. The AVMA notes that kittens need additional time for litter-box training and socialization, as well as more frequent feeding and supervision than an adult cat. Consider whether your household can provide that attention alongside the kitten’s other care needs.

What to do after bringing a kitten home
- Gather the medical information and written records supplied by the shelter, rescue, or breeder, including any vaccination and deworming history.
- Schedule a veterinary examination after acquiring the kitten and bring those records to the appointment.
- Ask your veterinarian to recommend care based on the kitten’s age, current condition, and documented history.
The AVMA recommends a post-acquisition veterinary examination and bringing available medical information to the visit. See its Selecting a Cat brochure.
