For a Ragdoll, start with the box’s usable floor space—not its “jumbo” label. A practical general guideline is a box at least 1.5 times your cat’s length; then check that the entry is easy to reach and the interior leaves room to turn, dig, and cover. No reliable breed-specific study establishes one design as best for all Ragdolls, so measure your cat and compare it with the box’s interior dimensions where available.
How large should a litter box be for a Ragdoll?
Veterinary guidance cited by NBC Select recommends a box whose longest side is at least 1.5 times the cat’s length from nose to tail. The American Association of Feline Practitioners’ client guidance similarly recommends at least 1.5 times the cat’s body length. These are general sizing recommendations, not findings from a Ragdoll-specific trial.

Measure your cat and compare that figure with the available interior floor, not just the outside dimensions. A cat should have room to enter, turn around, scratch, eliminate, and cover waste without being pressed against the walls. Product measurements often describe the exterior, and a broad external footprint does not establish how much usable space remains inside.

#1 Best Overall
- EXTRA LARGE SIZE FOR COMFORT: This extra large cat litter box measures 22.83" x 14.96" x 10.2" with a roomy 36L capacity, giving cats more space to turn, dig, and stretch comfortably.
- QUICK CLEANING, LESS MESS: The stainless steel litter box features a smooth non-stick surface that helps prevent litter and waste from sticking, making daily scooping and cleaning easier.
- INWARD-SLOPING DESIGN: Curved geometry guides litter inward, matching your cat's digging. It redirects particles back into the pan, minimizing tracking and keeping floors spotless for easy cleaning.
- FRESHER THAN PLASTIC: Unlike plastic cat litter boxes, this metal litter box resists stains and odors, helping keep your cat’s litter area cleaner and smelling fresher longer.
- OPEN TOP WITH USEFUL EXTRAS: The open top litter box design improves airflow and visibility. Includes a matching litter scoop and 4 anti-slip pads for a more stable setup.
| Option | Reported dimensions or design | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Nature’s Miracle Just for Cats Advanced High-Sided Corner Cat Litter Box | Catster’s overall pick; open, one-piece corner pan, 23 × 26 × 10 inches. | The triangular footprint may be awkward to place, and the listed exterior dimensions do not establish interior floor space. Catster’s review lists the product dimensions and pros and cons. |
| Frisco High-Sided Cat Litter Box, Extra Large | Catster’s value pick; open step-in design, 24 × 18 × 10 inches. | Check whether the usable length and width suit your cat. Catster notes the bottom may flex or warp. Catster’s review provides the listed measurements. |
| Frisco Multi-Function Covered Cat Litter Box | Covered design with hinged lid and an entry about 6 inches high; NBC Select lists 29.73 × 17.5 × 17.64 inches. | Confirm interior clearance and whether your cat accepts an enclosed box. The hinge and lid also affect cleaning access. NBC Select reports the dimensions and entry height. |
| Large plastic storage container adapted as a litter box | NBC Select lists a Sterilite 105 Qt. clear plastic latching box at 32.125 × 19.125 × 13.75 inches. | Those are exterior dimensions. A cut entry must be safely finished, easy for the cat to use, and positioned so the container remains stable. NBC Select discusses the container option. |
| Sifting tray with compatible wood pellets | A Ragdoll-focused guide describes a sifting system and wood pellets. | This only suits a compatible tray and a cat that accepts the setup; the recommendation is author advice, not a comparative veterinary finding. Ragdoll Cat Advice discusses the option. |
Balance easy entry with scatter control
Taller walls can help contain kicked litter, but an entrance should be low and accessible enough that the cat can walk in rather than make a difficult jump. Consider your cat’s age, mobility, and approach to the box. High-sided pans, covered boxes, and modified containers solve different problems; none is a universal Ragdoll preference.
Open boxes offer an unobstructed view and simpler access. A covered box may help contain scatter, but check the interior clearance and watch whether your cat is comfortable entering and using it. Let your cat’s behavior guide the choice rather than assuming that a covered or open design is preferred by the breed.
Check cleaning, litter depth, and placement
- Litter depth: NBC Select’s general guidance suggests about 2–3 inches to support digging.
- Cleaning: Scoop daily and wash the box between litter changes, as NBC Select recommends.
- Material: Plastic is light and easy to wash but can absorb odors over time. Stainless steel is easier to clean and does not absorb odors, but it is heavier and more expensive; these are general material tradeoffs, not Ragdoll-specific findings.
- Location: Choose a spot the cat can reach easily and where the box can be cleaned without difficulty. A corner-shaped model needs a suitable corner; a large pan or tote needs enough floor space.
Set up enough boxes in a multi-cat home
The AAFP client guide recommends one box per cat plus one, placed in at least two locations. Treat this as a general guideline and adapt it to the home’s layout and the cats’ relationships; several boxes clustered together may not function like boxes in separate accessible areas.

When an automatic box may not be a good fit
Some cats may avoid motorized self-cleaning boxes because of their noise or movement, according to an All Feline Hospital educational handout. A Ragdoll-focused guide also states that its author has not personally tried the automatic options it lists. Treat these systems as an optional category, not a validated breed-specific recommendation: check the current model’s specifications and safety information, and introduce it gradually while keeping an accepted box available.
If your cat stops using the box
Eliminating outside the box should not be treated as spite, and a larger box alone may not solve it. A change in litter-box behavior can be related to physical, social, or medical needs. If the behavior is new or persists, arrange a veterinary assessment; the Ragdoll-focused guidance also advises seeking veterinary input rather than assuming a box-size problem.
