Choose the animal whose individual needs your household can meet consistently—not the one that fits a stereotype. Compare your schedule, home, budget, household members, and long-term plans, then ask shelter or rescue staff about a particular animal’s temperament, history, and routine. The ASPCA recommends considering adoption through a shelter or rescue as a first option when bringing a companion animal home.
Compare the care each animal needs with the life you can provide
There is no universal rule that dogs suit active people or that cats are automatically low-maintenance. Needs and temperaments vary between individual animals. Use these questions to compare a specific dog and cat with your household’s real circumstances.
| Consideration | What to assess for a dog | What to assess for a cat |
|---|---|---|
| Daily time and interaction | Ask about the dog’s activity level, exercise, training, and social needs, and whether your schedule can accommodate them. | Ask about the cat’s temperament, routine, and social needs. Plan for daily care and interaction rather than assuming a cat needs little attention. |
| Home setup | Consider the individual dog’s needs and how you will keep the home safe; square footage alone does not determine fit. | Plan for a litter area, scratching outlets, and usable vertical space, as well as a safe home environment. |
| Other people and pets | Ask how the dog behaves around the people and animals who share your home. | Ask how the cat behaves around the people and animals who share your home. |
| Ongoing costs | Budget for food, veterinary care, preventive medication, supplies, and possible unexpected care. | Budget for food, veterinary care, preventive medication, supplies, and possible unexpected care. |
| Future changes | Consider whether housing, schedule, or finances could change, and who could care for the dog if they do. | Consider whether housing, schedule, or finances could change, and who could care for the cat if they do. |
Daily schedule and interaction
Be realistic about the time you can offer every day, including on busy or difficult days. The ASPCA’s dog-adoption advice specifically asks prospective adopters to consider whether their schedule allows plenty of time and whether a dog’s activity level fits their preferred routine. Ask about the particular animal rather than assuming all dogs need the same exercise or all cats prefer the same amount of solitude.
Home setup and safety
A cat’s setup commonly includes a litter box and scratching post, and usable vertical space may be beneficial. A dog’s setup depends on the individual animal and household; useful basics may include a leash and collar or harness, with a crate or pet gate where appropriate. Pet-proof either home, remove hazards, and secure doors and windows.

Other household members and animals
Consider how the specific animal behaves around children, visitors, and other pets who regularly share the home. Ask the shelter or rescue what is known and what remains uncertain. Plan gradual introductions; do not force interactions during the first days.
Long-term commitment and backup care
Think through plausible changes in housing, work or school schedules, and finances before adopting. Identify who could care for the animal if you are ill, away, or no longer able to provide care. A workable plan should cover ordinary routines as well as disruptions.

Build a realistic budget before deciding
Include routine food and veterinary care, preventive medication, supplies, and the possibility of unexpected treatment. Adoption fees differ between organizations and may contribute toward care an animal has already received. For a current estimate, ask local veterinary practices and price the supplies and services you expect to use; costs vary with location and an animal’s age and health.
The ASPCA’s Cutting Pet Care Costs table, marked as a 2021 update, estimates annual costs of $1,391 for a dog and $1,149 for a cat. It estimates initial or one-time costs of $1,030 for a dog and $455 for a cat, and first-year totals of $3,221 and $1,904, respectively. Those estimates use the categories and assumptions in that table, including health insurance, boarding, and special costs; they are historical reference figures, not current or universal quotes. No newer, location-specific comparison of dog and cat lifetime costs is established here.

Pet insurance is one option to consider when planning for uncertain veterinary expenses. Compare policies carefully: waiting periods and exclusions, including for pre-existing conditions, can affect coverage. Do not assume a policy will reimburse a particular bill or reduce your overall costs.
Choose with help from a shelter or rescue
- Review individual profiles. Look for information about each animal’s behavior, history, routine, and care needs.
- Ask staff about fit. Explain your schedule, home setup, household members, other animals, and experience. Ask what is known about the animal and where its needs may be a poor match for your circumstances.
- Compare the day-to-day routine. Picture the care the specific animal will need in your home, including interaction, exercise or activity, training where relevant, litter care, and veterinary attention.
- Make a practical budget and contingency plan. Price local care and supplies, and decide who can help if your circumstances change.
- Prepare before bringing the animal home. Set up a quiet, safe area with food and water bowls and appropriate species-specific basics. Remove hazards and secure doors and windows.
Give a newly adopted pet time to settle in
A new home can feel overwhelming. Keep a steady routine, provide a quiet place to retreat, and let the animal approach people and other pets at its own pace. Avoid forcing early interactions. The ASPCA describes an initial period of adjustment followed by change over weeks and months; treat that as a patient framework, not a guaranteed timetable for every pet. Arrange veterinary care after adoption.

The ASPCA’s policy statement, “Criteria for Responsible Care,” includes appropriate food and clean water, basic veterinary care such as vaccinations and parasite control, grooming and training as needed, exercise, social interaction, hazard prevention, prompt treatment for illness or injury, and sterilization before puberty for dogs, cats, ferrets, and rabbits. Use the animal’s individual needs and your capacity to provide this ongoing care—not a species stereotype—as the basis for your decision.
