What should I look for in Cane Corso puppy food?
Start with the nutritional adequacy statement on the exact package—not front-of-bag claims such as “premium” or “natural.” The statement should say the food is complete and balanced for growth and should explicitly include growth of large-size dogs. Puppies have different nutritional needs from mature dogs, and veterinary guidance recommends a large-breed growth diet for large and giant puppies. AAFCO explains how to understand pet-food labels; VCA’s large- and giant-breed puppy guidance and the Merck Veterinary Manual also address growth diets.
Read the full adequacy statement
Look for language indicating that the food is formulated for growth, including growth of large-size dogs, or that it meets that life-stage requirement through feeding tests. VCA distinguishes feeding-test substantiation from formulation substantiation; either can support suitability when the statement explicitly covers large-size growth. A food labeled only for adult maintenance is not the routine choice for a growing puppy unless your veterinarian has prescribed a different plan.
Use feeding directions as a starting estimate
Check the package’s feeding guide and calorie information, but do not treat its suggested amount as an exact prescription. Energy needs differ between individual puppies, and label amounts may overestimate what a particular dog needs. Measure portions consistently—ideally by weight—and review the puppy’s weight trend and body condition with the veterinary team.

Does my Cane Corso puppy need large-breed food?
A food specifically substantiated for large-size growth is the sensible default for a Cane Corso puppy. Large-breed growth diets pay particular attention to calcium and phosphorus, while controlled portions help avoid excessively rapid growth. The food and the amount fed work together: even an appropriate large-breed puppy food can contribute to excess growth if portions are too large.
Keep your puppy lean rather than trying to maximize growth speed. VCA gives a general target body condition score of 4–5 on a 9-point scale and notes that 4/9 can be safer during puppy growth. Ask your veterinarian to assess body condition and help adjust the ration as your puppy grows. VCA’s guidance on feeding large and giant breed puppies explains the importance of adjusting food to maintain appropriate condition.

- Diamond Naturals Large Breed Puppy Lamb and Rice dry dog food; REAL PASTURE-RAISED LAMB is the #1 ingredient; specially formulated with carefully determined protein and mineral content to support the needs of LARGE BREED PUPPIES
Do not try to judge the whole diet from one number
VCA describes a calcium-to-phosphorus ratio of 1.1:1 to 1.4:1 as usually safe when a puppy is not overeating. That range is not a substitute for the package’s growth adequacy statement or veterinary advice. Do not try to calculate a ratio from incomplete guaranteed-analysis figures; the label may not provide the information needed to do so reliably.
Puppies also need nutrients involved in development, including EPA and DHA for brain and retinal development, as well as vitamins and trace minerals. The practical choice is a complete, appropriately substantiated growth diet—not a collection of separate supplements. Your veterinarian can advise if a health condition or individual growth pattern calls for a different approach.

Should I add calcium or other supplements?
Do not add calcium, phosphorus, vitamin D, or mineral supplements to a complete growth food unless your veterinarian specifically recommends them. Merck says additions of calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D beyond a complete balanced diet are rarely necessary and may be contraindicated. VCA warns that supplementation can unbalance the diet. Follow the package’s directions and discuss any suspected deficiency or health concern with your veterinarian rather than supplementing on your own. Merck’s large-breed puppy guidance and VCA’s guidance explain these cautions.
How much should I feed my Cane Corso puppy?
- Begin with the package guide. Use the feeding directions for the food as an initial estimate, not a fixed rule.
- Measure each portion. Weighing food helps keep servings consistent and makes adjustments easier to track.
- Monitor condition and weight. Review your puppy’s weight trend and body condition regularly with the veterinary team.
- Adjust with veterinary guidance. Change the amount based on the puppy’s development and condition rather than trying to match a generic growth target.
Do not assume that a larger portion is better because the breed is large. The goal is steady, appropriate growth while keeping the puppy lean; the veterinarian can account for health, appetite, and the individual growth pattern.

How long should a Cane Corso eat puppy food?
There is no single transition age established specifically for Cane Corsos in the cited veterinary guidance. VCA gives a general large- and giant-breed growth-diet duration of approximately 18–24 months. Merck says skeletal maturity in large and giant breeds may take 10–16 months and advises continuing a growth diet until skeletal maturity. These are broad veterinary references, not a Cane Corso-specific timeline, so ask your veterinarian to decide when to transition based on your dog’s growth and maturity. VCA and the Merck Veterinary Manual describe these general considerations.
