There is no single best dog toy for every dog. Choose one that fits your dog’s preferred activity, size, age, and chewing habits—and supervise play when a toy could be torn apart. The guidance below draws on general recommendations from the American Kennel Club (AKC), not comparative testing or product trials; it does not establish a winning model.

Start with how your dog likes to play

A toy is more likely to suit your dog when its purpose matches what your dog already enjoys. The AKC describes toys for chasing and retrieving, gnawing, working for food, and carrying or cuddling. Its guide, Which Dog Toys Are Right for Your Dog?, is a useful starting point for matching play styles to toy types.

  • Chasing and retrieving: Consider a durable rubber fetch ball or a disc made for dogs.
  • Gnawing: Look for a chew toy suited to your dog’s age, size, breed, and chewing intensity.
  • Food-motivated play: Try a treat-dispensing toy or a puzzle that involves finding a treat.
  • Carrying or cuddling: A soft toy may fit, provided it stays intact and its parts are not accessible.

These are categories to consider, not a ranking. A dog’s preferences and behavior matter more than a toy’s popularity.

What to look for in each kind of dog toy

Fetch balls and dog-specific discs

Choose a fetch ball large enough that your dog cannot swallow it, and inspect it for damage. The AKC recommends durable rubber for fetch and notes that tennis balls can abrade tooth enamel or be popped, leaving pieces a dog might swallow. A disc made for dogs is another option for dogs that enjoy chasing a flying toy; supervise play and check it for damage.

Chew toys

Chew toys are not interchangeable: a toy that suits one dog may be a poor match for another. Consider the dog’s breed, age, size, and chewing behavior. The AKC cautions that objects that are too hard can damage teeth and says chew toys with some flexibility are generally recommended. Its article on damaging chews explains why hardness deserves attention.

Treat-dispensing and puzzle toys

A treat-dispensing toy makes food part of play, while a puzzle toy can ask a dog to find a treat or locate an object. Match the task to your dog’s ability, and supervise if the dog is damaging the toy or might swallow pieces. These toys provide an activity; the guidance cited here does not establish a measurable cognitive benefit.

Soft and plush toys

Soft toys can suit dogs that carry or cuddle their toys. Check regularly for tears, exposed stuffing, loose parts, or an accessible squeaker. If a toy is coming apart, remove it rather than letting the dog continue to chew it.

Check safety before and during play

A toy’s intended use does not make it safe in every dog’s mouth. Before giving a toy to your dog, consider whether it is the right size and whether your dog can tear off and swallow pieces. Watch how your dog handles it, especially if the dog is a puppy or tends to destroy toys.

Choose safer alternatives for fetch

Sticks can cause severe injuries, so use a dog-safe fetch toy instead. In the AKC article about stick-related injuries, British Veterinary Association President Sean Wensley said: “Our message is that these injuries are severe and are preventable simply by using dog-safe toys as alternatives to sticks.” This is a warning about sticks and a reason to choose an appropriate fetch toy—not a guarantee that any toy is safe regardless of size, condition, or supervision.

Extra care when choosing toys for a puppy

Puppies may tear toys apart, so supervise play and inspect toys frequently. Remove a toy with a rip, tear, or deep puncture; loose foam, stuffing, and other materials can be swallowed. The AKC’s puppy toy guide also describes puzzles that invite puppies to find treats or locate a toy. Choose a task the puppy can manage, and stop play if the toy begins to come apart.

A quick way to make your choice

  1. Identify the activity: Is your dog mainly chasing, chewing, seeking food, or carrying and cuddling?
  2. Match the toy to the dog: Account for size, age, breed, and chewing habits. For balls, choose a size your dog cannot swallow.
  3. Check its construction: For chew toys, avoid excessive hardness; for soft toys, make sure stuffing and small parts are not exposed.
  4. Watch the first play session: See whether your dog uses the toy as intended and whether it withstands that dog’s play.
  5. Inspect and remove damage: Discard toys with tears, deep punctures, loose pieces, or other signs they may be dismantled and swallowed.

A good choice is the toy that suits your dog’s play style and can be used without ignoring its size, condition, or chewing risks. The AKC guidance supports these selection criteria, but it does not identify a universally best toy or establish a tested product winner.
