A wide, shallow ceramic or glass bowl is a sensible starting point for most cats. Choose a bowl your cat can reach comfortably, keep it clean and filled with fresh water, and place it somewhere quiet and away from the litter tray. Cats have individual preferences, so watch what your cat actually uses rather than assuming one design suits every pet.

What kind of water bowl should you start with?

International Cat Care says most cats generally prefer glass or ceramic bowls that are wide and shallow, with water filled close to the brim. A broad opening can help keep a cat’s whiskers from brushing the sides, while a shallow shape lets the cat drink without putting its head deep into the bowl. These are general preferences, not guarantees; some cats will choose differently.

When shopping, prioritize those basic features over claims that a particular shape or material will increase drinking. The available care guidance does not establish that any specific bowl prevents dehydration or makes every cat drink more.

How bowl materials compare

Material What to consider
Glass or ceramic International Cat Care identifies these as materials most cats generally prefer. Choose a wide, shallow design and clean it regularly.
Metal Some cats may be deterred by noise, a cold surface, or reflections. A cat’s response varies, so observe whether it drinks comfortably.
Plastic Plastic can scratch easily and may retain bacteria in scratches, according to International Cat Care. Inspect it for damage and keep it clean.

Care guidance does not establish comparative figures for durability, stability, capacity, or cleaning performance across bowl materials. Check a specific product’s dimensions and care instructions before buying if those details matter to your household.

  • Leak-Proof Structure for Peace of Mind. Built with robust materials and a fully sealed construction, this fountain is reliably leak- and spill-proof, protecting your floors from unwanted messes.

Choose a shape and height your cat can use comfortably

Wide and shallow for an everyday bowl

A wide, shallow ceramic cat water bowl is a reasonable first choice if your cat has no special access needs. It offers the shape and material combination International Cat Care describes as generally preferred by cats. Filling it close to the brim may also make the water easier to reach.

Raised bowls for limited mobility

A raised cat water bowl may be worth trying for a cat with osteoarthritis or reduced mobility. International Cat Care notes that crouching can be painful for some cats and that they may prefer a raised bowl. Elevation is an option for a particular need, not a benefit established for every cat.

Where to put the bowl and how many to offer

Placement and upkeep matter as much as bowl design. Put water in an accessible, quiet location away from the litter tray, and keep it fresh. Cornell also advises keeping dishes away from the litter box and their contents fresh.

  • Provide at least one water bowl per cat, plus one additional bowl, as recommended by International Cat Care.
  • Offer bowls in locations your cat can reach easily.
  • Refresh the water daily and clean bowls regularly.
  • Keep water dishes away from litter trays.

Multiple clean water sources give a cat more than one place to drink. If your cat consistently avoids a bowl, try a different location or design and monitor whether that changes its habits.

Should you choose a fountain instead?

A cat water fountain is an alternative for a cat that prefers moving water. Cornell says some cats increase their water intake when given a fountain, but preferences vary. A fountain is not a guaranteed way to improve hydration, and it does not remove the need to provide clean water. Follow the device’s cleaning and maintenance directions so water remains fresh.

Still bowls remain a straightforward option. You can offer more than one type of water source and let your cat show which it prefers.

How much water does a cat need?

Cornell’s Feline Health Center gives a general estimate of about 4 ounces of water per five pounds of lean body weight per day. It notes that an average 10-pound cat would drink about one cup daily, but food moisture contributes to total water intake; cats eating wet food may drink less from a bowl. Treat this as context, not a precise target for an individual cat.

Hydration comes from both drinking and food. Wet food and multiple clean water sources can contribute to intake, but a bowl is not medical treatment for kidney disease, urinary problems, or dehydration. Follow your veterinarian’s advice for a cat with a diagnosed condition.

When a change in drinking needs veterinary attention

Contact a veterinarian if your cat appears dehydrated or has a concerning change in how much it drinks. Cornell notes that dehydration can result from illness and that the underlying cause needs attention. Do not rely on a new bowl or fountain to address a medical problem.
