Measure your dog, then check that it can sit, stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably.
How to measure your Golden Retriever for a crate
- Measure standing height. With your dog standing naturally, measure from the top of its head to the bottom of its feet.
- Measure length. Measure from the tip of the nose to the tip of the tail.
- Add room. Add 3 to 4 inches to both measurements to estimate the crate’s required height and length. Use the crate’s usable interior dimensions when comparing models, and account for bedding, which takes up space. The American Kennel Club explains this measurement method in its guide to choosing a crate.
Measurements narrow down your options; a fit check decides whether a crate works. Your dog should be able to sit, stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably. If it has to crouch, squeeze, or curl up unnaturally, choose a larger crate.
Is a 42-inch crate right for a Golden Retriever?
It is a useful size to consider, not a guarantee. PetMD’s sizing chart lists 42 × 28 × 30 inches for Golden Retrievers and gives a 71–90-pound range for that chart row. The chart is a general recommendation, and PetMD emphasizes that individual measurements matter more than breed or weight alone. Check the dimensions of the specific crate and your dog’s fit before choosing it. See PetMD’s dog crate sizing guide.
Is a 36-inch crate big enough, or should you get a 48-inch crate?
Neither size label settles the question: dimensions and usable interior space can vary by model. Compare each crate’s interior height and length with your dog’s measurements, including the recommended 3 to 4 inches of extra room, then check the four movements—sit, stand, turn, and lie down. A 36-inch crate is too small if your dog cannot do those comfortably. A 48-inch crate may suit a larger dog or one that benefits from more room to stretch, provided it still fits your home and intended use.

For a house-trained adult, extra space can be comfortable. For a puppy learning where to toilet, an oversized, unpartitioned crate may leave enough room to soil one end and rest at the other.
What size crate does a Golden Retriever puppy need?
Choose a crate that can accommodate your puppy’s expected adult size, then use an adjustable divider to limit the usable area while the puppy is small. Move the divider as your puppy grows so there is room to stand, turn, and lie down, without leaving a separate toilet area. The American Kennel Club discusses crate selection and puppy dividers in its crate guide.

Which crate style suits your dog and household?
- Wire: Durable, well ventilated, and easier to clean. A 42-inch wire crate with an adjustable divider is one practical option if its measured interior fits your dog.
- Plastic: Durable and more enclosed, but can be cumbersome to store.
- Fabric: Lightweight and foldable, but less durable; it may be a poor choice for a puppy or a dog that chews.
Whichever style you choose, check the crate’s interior dimensions and ensure any mat or bedding does not reduce the space below a comfortable fit. The American Kennel Club’s crate selection guidance covers common styles and their trade-offs.

A crate should not be used to force a highly distressed dog to remain confined. Cornell advises against leaving a dog crated alone when it is excessively barking or vocalizing, pacing, panting, eliminating, or drooling. A larger safe area or help from a qualified professional may be more appropriate. Cornell also cautions against extended crating without opportunities to relieve itself, play, exercise, and engage in natural behaviors.
