How to Choose the Right Food for Your Dog: Label Checks That Actually Matter

A practical, guideline-based way to compare dog foods: life stage, the adequacy statement, ingredient-list limits, portions and when to see a vet.

The best dog food is one that is labeled as complete and balanced for your dog’s life stage, suits your dog’s size, activity and health, and keeps your dog at a healthy body condition when fed in the right amount. Marketing words such as “premium” or “natural” will not tell you that. This guide shows what to check on the package, what to ignore, and when to ask a veterinarian. The label examples are from the United States; pet-food rules differ elsewhere.

The short checklist

  1. Species and life stage: the food is made for dogs and for your dog’s stage (growth, adult maintenance, or all life stages).
  2. Nutritional adequacy statement: the package says the food is complete and balanced for that stage.
  3. Dog-specific fit: size, activity, neuter status, body condition and any health condition make sense with the choice.
  4. Feeding directions: they are clear, and you can monitor intake and weight.
  5. Manufacturer transparency: you can contact the company and ask follow-up questions.

None of these certifies a brand. They are criteria for narrowing your options. Your veterinary team is the best source for advice on your individual dog, and the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) Global Nutrition Committee says as much: veterinary healthcare teams “should, of course, be the first port of call for advice on nutrition,” according to committee co-chair Dr Marge Chandler in WSAVA’s 2021 announcement of its updated nutrition toolkit.

Step 1: Match the food to your dog’s life stage

AAFCO, the Association of American Feed Control Officials, explains in its consumer guidance, “Selecting the Right Pet Food,” that dogs at different stages need different nutrient amounts and ratios. A food that suits one stage can be a poor fit for another:

  • Growth foods can be calorie-rich for a less active adult dog.
  • A food designed for sedentary adults may not supply enough for a working dog, or for a pregnant or nursing dog.

Health status, activity level, size and sterilization status can all affect the right choice too. If your dog is growing, pregnant, nursing, very active, or has a medical condition, get veterinary input before settling on a diet.

Step 2: Find the nutritional adequacy statement

AAFCO describes “complete” as containing all required nutrients and “balanced” as containing them in the correct ratios. In the United States, look on the package (usually near the ingredient list or on the back or side panel) for a sentence that states the food is complete and balanced for a named life stage. It typically takes one of two forms:

Statement type What it means
Formulated to meet AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles The recipe was formulated to meet the nutrient levels in the AAFCO profiles for that life stage.
Animal feeding tests using AAFCO procedures substantiate the food The food was fed to dogs under AAFCO-described feeding-test procedures, which substantiate complete and balanced nutrition for that stage.

Read the wording carefully. AAFCO does not approve or endorse individual brands, and a statement is a useful minimum criterion rather than a promise that every dog will do well on the product.

Foods that are not meant to be the whole diet

Treats and supplements generally do not carry an adequacy statement and are meant to be fed alongside a complete diet. A product marked for intermittent or supplemental feeding is not designed to be a dog’s sole food. AAFCO adds that some therapeutic diets and veterinary medical foods carry such a statement because they restrict certain nutrients to address a disease. Use those only as your veterinarian directs.

If you are outside the United States

Labeling rules vary by country. WSAVA’s Global Nutrition Committee FAQ (last updated January 2018) notes, for example, that European labels use “complete” versus “complementary” language. Check your local regulator’s guidance for how adequacy is expressed where you live.

Step 3: Read the ingredient list for what it can and cannot tell you

An ingredient list shows what is in the food, but not how good it is. WSAVA says ingredient names do not reveal ingredient quality, digestibility or nutrient bioavailability. What matters is the finished product and the expertise and quality control of the company making it. So a named first ingredient, a grain-free claim or a long list of appealing ingredients does not on its own show that a diet is safer or better.

AAFCO’s FAQ makes related points about common marketing terms:

  • “Premium” is not regulated in feed law.
  • “Natural” is not an expression of safety.

AAFCO also notes that formulating a nutritionally complete diet is complicated, which is a reason to be cautious about homemade recipes that have not been formulated by a qualified professional. If you want to cook for your dog, discuss it with your veterinarian first.

Step 4: Ask the manufacturer questions

WSAVA’s updated food-selection tool emphasizes that a company should be reachable and willing to answer questions. Contact details should be on the package or website. Reasonable questions include who formulates the diet, what quality controls are used, and which adequacy statement applies to a specific product. How openly a company answers is itself useful information. It does not rank one brand above another, though.

Step 5: Work out how much to feed

AAFCO says feeding directions on a complete food must state an amount by animal weight and time. Treat these as a starting point:

  1. Begin with the package directions for your dog’s weight.
  2. Measure portions consistently rather than estimating.
  3. Check your dog’s weight and body condition regularly, using a body condition chart such as those in the WSAVA nutrition toolkit.
  4. Adjust if your dog gains or loses weight, or if activity changes.
  5. Contact your veterinarian if weight changes or other health concerns appear.

WSAVA’s toolkit also includes a healthy adult dog calorie chart, marked as updated in July 2020. It is a reference for monitoring, not an individual calorie prescription. Remember to count treats and food used for training in the day’s total.

When to involve a veterinarian

  • Your dog has a disease or an unusual dietary need.
  • Someone suggests a therapeutic or prescription diet, which should only be used under veterinary guidance.
  • Your dog is pregnant, nursing, growing quickly or working hard.
  • Weight or body condition is changing despite following the feeding directions.
  • You are considering a homemade, restricted or unconventional diet.

A general article cannot tell you which diet treats a medical problem. Your veterinary team can, and can also point you to a veterinary nutrition specialist when needed.

Comparing two foods side by side

Question What to look for
Is it for dogs and the right life stage? Stage named on the package, matching your dog
Is it complete and balanced? An adequacy statement, noting whether it is nutrient-profile or feeding-test based
Does it suit this dog? Size, activity, neuter status, body condition and health considered, with veterinary input where needed
Can I feed and monitor it properly? Clear feeding directions; you can track intake and condition
Is the company accessible? Contact details and willingness to answer questions

If two foods pass these checks, the better choice is usually the one your dog eats reliably and maintains a healthy body condition on, at a price you can sustain.
