1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose salmon dog food by checking whether it is complete and balanced for your dog’s life stage, then compare calories, feeding directions, and manufacturer information. Salmon is a protein choice—not, by itself, proof that a food is healthier or a treatment for allergies. For a dog with a suspected food allergy or other health concern, ask a veterinarian before changing diets.
Start with your dog’s life stage and needs
Look for the food’s nutritional adequacy statement, usually in small print on the back or side of the package. Check that it is intended for your dog’s life stage: growth, adult maintenance, or gestation and lactation. These stages have different nutritional needs. A food labeled for all life stages should include feeding directions relevant to those stages.
Do not assume a salmon image or the word “salmon” on the front establishes that the formula suits your dog. The adequacy statement and the life-stage wording are more useful starting points.
Check whether it is complete and balanced
If the food will be your dog’s main diet, look for a statement that it is “complete and balanced” for the appropriate life stage. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, adequacy can be substantiated by meeting an AAFCO nutrient profile or by passing a feeding trial using AAFCO procedures. Treats and supplements generally are not intended to serve as a complete diet.

AAFCO does not approve or endorse individual pet foods. Describe what the package says accurately—for example, that it meets an AAFCO nutrient profile or was substantiated by a feeding trial—rather than calling it “AAFCO-approved.” FDA’s guide to complete-and-balanced pet food explains the label statement and the two substantiation routes.
Read the label beyond the salmon callout
Under U.S. labeling rules, ingredients are listed by common or usual name in descending order by weight. That list tells you which ingredients are declared, but it does not establish their quality or whether a qualified nutritionist helped formulate the food. The World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) nutrition guidelines recommend looking beyond the ingredient list and seeking information about the manufacturer’s nutrition expertise.

Terms such as “premium” or “natural,” and prominent pictures of salmon, do not on their own verify a nutritional advantage. For questions the package does not answer, use the manufacturer’s contact information to ask who formulates the food and what nutrition expertise is available. WSAVA’s 2021 announcement of nutrition resources points to questions owners can use when evaluating pet food companies.
Compare nutrients and calories fairly
The guaranteed analysis lists nutrient amounts on an “as-fed” basis, which includes the food’s moisture. That can make direct comparisons between dry and wet foods misleading. To compare a nutrient on a dry-matter basis, use the moisture percentage on each label:
Rank #3
- Oat meal is easily digestible and gentle on the digestive system
- High protein formula, with real salmon as the first ingredient
- Fortified with guaranteed live probiotics for digestive and immune health
- Used to be known as FOCUS Sensitive Skin and Stomach Salmon and Rice Formula
- Sunflower oil rich in omega-6 fatty acids for healthy skin and coat
- Calculate dry matter: 100 minus the food’s moisture percentage.
- Divide the as-fed nutrient guarantee by the dry-matter percentage.
- Multiply by 100 to express the result as a dry-matter percentage.
For example, a label showing 10% protein and 75% moisture has 25% dry matter; its protein is 40% on a dry-matter basis (10 ÷ 25 × 100). This calculation makes nutrient comparisons more meaningful across foods with different moisture levels, but it does not by itself determine which food is right for your dog.
Also compare calorie content. AAFCO says the label’s calorie statement is expressed in kilocalories per kilogram and a familiar measure, such as a cup or can. Check the serving measure as well as the calorie figure, since a cup, can, or other portion may differ between products. FDA’s labeling and pet-food claims guidance and AAFCO’s label-reading guide explain what to look for.

Use feeding directions as a starting point
Follow the package’s directions for your dog’s life stage as an initial guide, not a fixed prescription. AAFCO notes that feeding amounts may need adjustment for a dog’s activity and condition. Watch your dog’s weight and body condition and adjust intake if needed. A working dog, a pregnant or nursing dog, and a sedentary adult can have different needs even when their weights are similar.
For individualized feeding advice, especially when your dog has a health condition or weight is changing, consult your veterinarian. AAFCO’s pet-food selection guidance and frequently asked questions cover life stages, adequacy statements, feeding directions, and calorie information.

When salmon is part of an allergy or health question
The cited FDA, AAFCO, and WSAVA materials do not establish that salmon is universally better for dogs, prevents skin problems, or treats a suspected food allergy. A salmon-based food is not automatically appropriate for an allergic dog. Do not diagnose an allergy or choose a diet as treatment based only on an ingredient list or marketing claim; discuss the symptoms and diet with your veterinarian.
A quick label checklist
- Does the adequacy statement say the food is complete and balanced for your dog’s life stage?
- Is the product a main diet rather than a treat or supplement?
- Can you identify the calorie content and serving measure, and follow the relevant feeding directions?
- If comparing wet and dry foods, have you accounted for moisture by comparing nutrients on a dry-matter basis?
- Can the manufacturer answer questions about formulation and nutrition expertise?
- Does your dog have a suspected allergy or medical need that calls for veterinary guidance?
Labels and formulas can change, and U.S. label rules may differ from those in other jurisdictions. Verify the current package before buying or feeding the product.
