Lift the waste without rubbing it into the carpet, blot away residue with cool water, then use a pet-accident cleaner whose label covers both feces and your carpet type. Spot-test first, follow the product directions, and keep your cat off the damp area until it is dry.
How to clean cat poop from carpet
- Lift the solid waste. Carefully pick up or lift away as much as possible without pressing it into the carpet pile. Avoid rubbing, which can spread the mess and make residue harder to remove.
- Rinse and blot. Dampen a clean cloth with cool water and blot the area to loosen and lift remaining residue. Do not scrub. Rinse the cloth and repeat with clean water as needed, blotting up moisture between passes. Humane Society guidance recommends cool-water rinsing and blotting for carpeted areas; South Sacramento County SPCA guidance also addresses defecation cleanup.
- Apply a suitable pet-accident cleaner. Choose a cleaner labeled for pet accidents that explicitly covers feces and is compatible with your carpet. ASPCA recommends an enzymatic cleanser designed to neutralize pet odors. Test the product on an inconspicuous spot first, then apply it as directed on the label.
- Let the area dry before your cat returns. Keep your cat away while the carpet is wet, and follow any additional re-entry precautions on the product label. Blot up excess moisture only as directed; do not add other cleaners unless the label allows it.
How to choose a cleaner
Look for an enzymatic pet stain and odor remover for carpet, but let the product label—not the product category alone—determine whether it suits this job. Compare the label for:
- Explicit coverage for feces and carpet or area rugs.
- Carpet compatibility and spot-test instructions.
- Application method, dwell time, and directions for repeat use.
- Drying and pet re-entry precautions.
- Whether it is a spot spray or intended for use in a carpet-cleaning machine.
For example, OxiClean’s Carpet & Area Rug Pet Stain & Odor Remover lists feces among the pet stains it is intended to address. That is manufacturer information, not independent evidence that it outperforms other cleaners. Check the current label and product directions before use.
Keep your cat away from wet carpet
Follow the cleaner’s label and store or dispose of cleaning materials safely. ASPCA Animal Poison Control says enzyme-based cleaners tend to cause mild stomach upset if ingested and advises letting treated areas dry before pets return. ASPCA also recommends keeping pets away from wet carpet shampoo until it is dry. If you are unsure whether a product or application method is appropriate, contact the manufacturer or your veterinarian.

What to do if odor or staining remains
Once the area is dry, check for lingering odor or visible residue. If either remains, repeat treatment only if the product label permits it and follow its instructions. For a set-in stain, the Humane Society of the United States suggests considering a rented carpet cleaner. A persistent problem may warrant advice from a carpet-cleaning professional; there is no established universal number of cleaning rounds or single method that guarantees odor removal.
