For a little mud, wipe your dog’s paws with a pet-safe wipe or damp cloth. If mud is packed around the pads or spread across the coat, rinse the paws or give your dog a bath. Check between the toes, then dry thoroughly; bathe with warm water and dog-formulated shampoo only when the mess calls for it.
Choose a cleanup based on where the mud is

Clean muddy paws
Wipe off light dirt
For a light coating of mud, a pet-safe wipe or damp cloth is usually enough. Check the wipe label to make sure it is intended for pets. If dirt remains, move to a rinse or wash rather than rubbing harder.
Wash heavier mud and inspect the paws
Use a warm, soapy washcloth, rinse the paws with water, or use a portable paw cleaner. As you clean, gently check between the toes, around and between the pads, and under the nails for trapped dirt or irritation. Rinse away soap and dry the paws thoroughly before your dog goes back outside. AKC’s paw-cleaning guidance describes these options and checks.
When the coat needs a bath
If mud is spread over much of the coat, or your dog has run through puddles, a bath may be the practical choice. Brush out burrs and tangles before getting the coat wet. Use warm water and shampoo formulated for dogs, work it through the dirty coat, and rinse thoroughly so shampoo does not remain in the fur. VCA Animal Hospitals’ grooming guidance notes that dogs who enjoy puddles or water may need a bath after a muddy walk; AKC also advises brushing before bathing and using dog shampoo.

Dry your dog and check the skin
Towel-dry a wet coat thoroughly. Drying is also a useful time to look for visible irritation, scrapes, scabs, or other changes. AKC recommends drying paws well, and its guidance on drying describes checking the skin and coat as you do so.
Adjust bathing to your dog
There is no single bath schedule that suits every dog: coat, age, lifestyle, and health affect how often bathing is appropriate. If your dog needs frequent baths, has allergies or another skin condition, or develops persistent skin or coat problems, ask your veterinarian how often to bathe and whether a therapeutic or other specific product is suitable.
