A side-by-side chart can help you spot differences in activity, grooming, sociability, and other traits; the best fit depends on your household and the cat you meet.
What a cat-breed comparison can tell you
The Cats.com Compare Cat Breeds tool lets you select up to three breeds and view profile details and characteristic ratings side by side. Fields include temperament, origin, group, size, life expectancy, price, affection, activity, pet- and kid-friendliness, sociability, intelligence, playfulness, independence, vocality, and grooming. Its breed directory also offers filters for activity, playfulness, grooming requirement, size, and coat type.

These details are useful for narrowing choices and deciding what to investigate next. They are not guarantees about a particular cat. Cats.com notes that each cat has a unique personality, even though breed genetics can influence broad traits such as sociability, playfulness, and intelligence. Treat ratings as profile guidance, not as independently validated population statistics. Prices and profile details may change, so check the current listing rather than relying on a figure as timeless.
How to compare breeds for everyday fit
Activity and enrichment
Consider whether your schedule and home can support the activity described in each breed profile. Cats.com characterizes Bengals as highly active, with substantial daily activity and multiple play sessions. That is a practical question to weigh—not a claim that every Bengal will behave identically.

Coat and grooming
Compare coat type and the profile’s grooming guidance, then assess the individual cat’s coat. The Cats.com Ragdoll profile recommends regular grooming, and says most cats appreciate daily brushing. A grooming brush is included in its new-cat checklist, but no single brush type is presented as right for every coat.
Social needs and household
Use sociability, affection, pet-friendliness, and kid-friendliness ratings to form questions about your household: how much interaction the cat may enjoy, how long it will be alone, and whether children or other pets are part of the home. Ratings can help guide those questions, but the individual cat’s personality and experience matter too.

Health questions
Breed profiles can point to health topics worth discussing, but they do not replace veterinary guidance or the records of a specific cat. Cats.com’s profiles, for example, mention hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) in Bengals and several conditions associated with Ragdolls. Ask a veterinarian or the cat’s current caregiver about relevant screening, medical history, and what applies to that individual.
Allergies
Do not choose a breed on the assumption that it will be allergy-safe. Cats.com states that no cat is completely hypoallergenic. Its Sphynx profile recommends that allergy-sensitive people spend time with adult Sphynx cats and observe their own response; an individual reaction cannot be guaranteed from the breed name alone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical way to use the comparison
- Choose up to three candidates. Start with breeds that seem plausible for your schedule, household, and preferences.
- Compare the daily demands. Look at activity, grooming, sociability, and other traits that will shape routine care.
- Turn uncertain ratings into questions. Ask about time alone, play needs, interactions with children or pets, coat care, and relevant health history.
- Meet the individual cat. Use the breed profile as context, then assess temperament and care needs with the cat’s caregiver and, where appropriate, a veterinarian.
A comparison is most useful when it helps you ask better questions. It can narrow the field, but your final decision should account for the individual cat’s behavior, needs, and fit with your home.
