How to Compare Working Dog Insurance for Farms

A practical guide to comparing farm-dog policies by the exact duties and risks insured—not just the “working dog” label or headline limit.

Compare farm-dog insurance by the exact work your dog does and the specific event you need covered: veterinary treatment, death or humane destruction, inability to work, or liability. These are separate benefits, and a policy described as “working-dog insurance” may cover liability without paying veterinary bills. Get the current policy wording and written confirmation for your dog and duties before relying on a quote.

Start by confirming the dog and its work are eligible

Tell each insurer what the dog actually does—not just that it is a farm dog. Include herding or droving, guarding, trials, travel, and any work away from the farm. Ask for written confirmation that the named activities are covered. Eligibility for one kind of working dog does not establish eligibility for another.

Do not assume ordinary pet insurance covers farm work. For example, a cited PetProtect policy booklet excludes dogs used for work, including farming; that is one policy’s wording, not evidence that every pet policy has the same exclusion. Check the insurer’s current wording and ask about the specific dog.

Also distinguish working-dog liability cover from insurance for the dog itself. Cliverton lists working farm dogs among the activities eligible for its business-related public liability policy, but says that policy is not suitable for people seeking veterinary-fee cover. Confirm the scope of Cliverton’s working-dogs cover directly.

Compare the events insured, not just the policy name

Make the insurer identify which of these benefits the quote includes. A policy may cover one without covering the others.

  • Veterinary fees: Ask whether illness and injury are both covered, what treatment qualifies, and whether the cover is for ordinary treatment or only treatment intended to prevent death or humane destruction.
  • Death or humane destruction: Check covered causes, age restrictions, valuation method, the insured sum and the proof required. A death benefit is not necessarily enough to source and train a replacement.
  • Inability to work: Ask whether the policy pays if illness or injury leaves the dog unable to do its usual job, and how it defines that condition. In a 2015 Farmers Weekly Q&A, NFU Mutual farming insurance specialist Chris Walsh said working dogs can be covered if they die or can no longer do their job because of illness or injury. That is useful context, not a guarantee under current policies. Read the Farmers Weekly Q&A.
  • Public liability: Ask whether third-party injury or property damage connected with the dog’s work is insured, and whether that cover is part of the same policy or separate. Liability is not a substitute for veterinary or replacement cover.

Compare limits and how claims affect your costs

For each benefit, record the limit per claim, per dog and per policy year. Then note the excess, any percentage contribution, waiting period and whether a limit renews. Check what a “working dogs” sum actually applies to; its heading alone does not tell you whether it is a veterinary limit, death benefit or another benefit.

Example What the cited source states How to interpret it
Land Based Underwriters Small Farm and Smallholding Insurance The provider’s product page, reviewed in 2026, displays a £1,000 working-dog limit across the listed small-farm cover levels. This is a provider-specific displayed limit, not a market average. Check the schedule and full wording to establish what it pays for. View the small-farm cover page.
Agria / BASC Working Dog Insurance The product page, reviewed in 2026, describes gundog cover while working on a shoot, lifetime cover and choices from £3,000 to £20,000. This is an adjacent gundog product; the cited page does not establish eligibility for farm dogs. Do not compare its figures directly with another policy unless the insured benefit and limit basis match. View Agria’s BASC working-dog page.

Compare a death benefit with the realistic cost of sourcing and training a replacement. Compare veterinary limits with the treatment costs you want to insure, while accounting for the excess and any co-payment. No independent UK market-wide figure for typical working-farm-dog premiums, veterinary costs or replacement values is established by the cited sources.

“Lifetime” veterinary-fee cover does not necessarily mean unlimited cover. Agria explains that the term often refers to a cap that can refresh at renewal if the policy stays in force. Read the renewal conditions and check the amount available for each condition or policy year. See Agria’s explanation of lifetime pet insurance.

Check exclusions, valuation rules and claim conditions

Read the schedule together with the full policy wording and endorsements. Check exclusions for work activities, territory, age, pre-existing conditions, illness or disease, and trial participation. Confirm reporting deadlines, veterinary evidence requirements, identity or ownership records, and what evidence is needed to establish the dog’s value.

For example, Argis Farm Extra is Australian wording, not a UK policy or benchmark. Its Farm Working Dogs section applies only if shown on the certificate; it describes dog-death cover subject to the selected sum insured and fair-market-value basis, age restrictions, and veterinary fees up to $500 in specified circumstances. Use it only as an illustration of why the certificate, limits and conditions matter; its terms should not be applied to a UK farm. Read the Argis Farm Extra wording.

A 2015 Farmers Weekly answer said veterinary-fee limits under livestock policies could be low and death payments might not cover replacement cost. Treat that as dated context, not a verified description of today’s market. The same article’s attributed statement that fees were “usually the value of the dog and rarely more than a few hundred pounds” is not a current market-wide benchmark.

Get comparable quotes and written answers

Ask each insurer or broker to quote the same dog, duties, location and requested benefit limits. Obtain the schedule, complete wording and any endorsements before choosing. Written answers make it easier to see where policies differ.

  1. Give the insurer the dog’s age, identity, location and a full description of its work, including any trials or non-farm duties.
  2. Ask which named activities are covered and whether illness and accident are treated differently.
  3. Ask whether veterinary fees cover ordinary treatment or only specified circumstances, and record the limit, excess, co-payment, waiting period and renewal rules.
  4. Ask whether death, humane destruction or inability to work is insured; if so, request the covered causes, age restrictions and valuation basis.
  5. Ask whether public liability is included or separate, and what exclusions apply to the dog’s work.
  6. Ask what records, veterinary reports, proof of identity and proof of value are required, and how quickly a loss must be reported.
  7. Check that every selected benefit appears on the schedule or certificate. In the Argis example, the Farm Working Dogs section applies only when shown on the certificate; other insurers’ documents must be checked on their own terms.

What the available examples do—and do not—show

The cited products illustrate why labels and headline sums are not enough: Cliverton’s example is business-related liability cover; Land Based Underwriters displays a working-dog limit in its small-farm offering; and Agria’s BASC product is described for gundogs on shoots, with farm-dog eligibility not established on the cited page. None should be treated as a recommendation without checking current documents and suitability for the dog.

Agria reports that 98% of claims were paid across Agria Pet Insurance and Royal Kennel Club Pet Insurance claims received from January through December 2025. This is the provider’s aggregate figure, not a working-farm-dog-specific rate and not a prediction that an individual claim will be accepted. The product page gives Agria’s claim statistic.
