How to Convert Cat Years to Human Years: Easy Formula and Chart

A 1-year-old cat is about 15 human-equivalent years old and a 2-year-old about 24; after age 2, the AAHA chart adds about four years per listed cat year. Use the chart as a rough comparison, not a measure of individual health.

A 1-year-old cat is about 15 human-equivalent years old, and a 2-year-old cat is about 24. For whole-year ages from 2 onward, add about four human-equivalent years for each additional cat year using this rough formula: 24 + 4 × (cat age in years − 2).

These numbers are a comparison, not a precise measure of a cat’s biological age or health. The AAHA chart provides the conversion values below.

How to calculate a cat’s human-equivalent age

For a whole-year age of 2 or older, use the formula based on the AAHA chart:

  1. Subtract 2 from the cat’s age in years.
  2. Multiply the result by 4.
  3. Add 24.

Example: For a 6-year-old cat, 24 + 4 × (6 − 2) = about 40 human-equivalent years.

The simple formula describes the chart’s whole-year values. Do not treat it as a precise month-by-month conversion.

Why the seven-year rule is too simple

The familiar idea that one cat year equals seven human years assumes a constant rate of aging. The AAHA chart instead places a 1-year-old cat at about 15 human-equivalent years and a 2-year-old at about 24, then adds about four years for each listed year afterward. This better reflects the chart’s rapid early progression, but it is still only a broad comparison.

What life stage is your cat in?

The 2021 AAHA/AAFP feline life-stage guidelines use these calendar-age categories:

Life stage Calendar age
Kitten Birth to 1 year
Young adult 1–6 years
Mature adult 7–10 years
Senior Older than 10 years

These are care categories, not rigid boundaries or a measure of an individual cat’s health. The AAHA/AAFP life-stage guidance provides further context.

How accurate is the cat-age calculation?

The conversion is an accessible comparison, not a precise biological measurement, diagnosis, or prediction of lifespan. A cat’s actual health should be assessed using its calendar age, history, examination, and veterinary advice—not a human-age equivalent.

The AAHA/AAFP guidelines recommend thorough physical examinations at least annually for cats and checkups every six months for senior cats. These are guideline recommendations; a veterinarian may advise a different schedule for an individual cat. See the AAHA announcement on the guidelines.

The Bottom Line

Use about 15 human-equivalent years for a 1-year-old cat and 24 for a 2-year-old; for whole-year ages after 2, add about four for each additional year. The AAHA chart is a rough comparison, not a precise biological measurement or substitute for veterinary care.
