You are not grieving incorrectly because you cannot stop crying. Crying is a natural response to losing a cat, and there is no normal timeline for grief. For now, allow yourself to cry, be gentle with yourself, and reach out to someone compassionate if you do not want to be alone.

Why losing a cat can hurt so much

Your cat may have been part of your everyday routine, your home, and your closest companionship. Their death can leave a painful gap in familiar moments and responsibilities. Grief is personal: people may cry, feel low or have trouble sleeping, and their experiences can differ even when they have lost a cat in similar circumstances.

There is no prescribed set of stages or deadline for feeling better. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine describes grieving as a healthy, natural response to loss. Let your feelings be what they are rather than judging yourself for their intensity.

What to do when you cannot stop crying

You do not have to make the grief go away right now. Choose a small, low-pressure step that feels possible:

Healing After Loss: Daily Meditations For Working Through Grief
  • For those who have suffered the loss of a loved one,
  • here are strength and the thoughtful words to inspire
  • and comfort.
  • Allow yourself to cry and give yourself time to grieve.
  • Be patient and kind with yourself; try not to demand that you feel better on a schedule.
  • Contact a compassionate friend or family member who understands how much your cat mattered.
  • Write about your feelings or express them through art, if that feels right for you.
  • Set a boundary with people who dismiss your loss. You do not have to debate whether your grief is valid.

These are options, not guaranteed treatments. You can try one, leave it aside, or ask someone to help with practical needs while you grieve.

Finding support after your cat dies

Some people want to speak with a friend, while others prefer a pet-loss group, hotline, book, or grief counselor. There is no single best kind of support for everyone. Consider whether you would rather talk one-to-one, share with peers, or reflect privately.

Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine lists pet-loss support resources, including its hotline and online support options. Check Cornell’s current information directly for availability and hours. Cornell notes that its pet-loss hotline is not a mental-health crisis line.

A grief counselor may be worth considering if grief is affecting sleep, eating, everyday tasks, or relationships, or if you feel invalidated, are facing relationship stress, or find that older concerns have resurfaced. Seeking support does not mean your bond with your cat was unhealthy or that you should be over the loss.

Remembering your cat, if you want to

Remembrance is optional. Some people find meaning in a memorial gathering, planting flowers or a tree, making a photo book or video, saving a fur clipping, or donating in their cat’s name. Other people do not want a keepsake or ritual, and that is okay too.

A resource Cornell lists is The Loss of a Pet: A Guide to Coping with the Grieving Process when a Pet Dies. A book can offer ideas for reflection, but it is not a substitute for counseling when you need professional support.

What research says about pet loss

A 2021 literature review examined 48 studies and described reported coping mechanisms including social support, continuing bonds, memorialization, religion, and relationships with other animals. A separate 2021 qualitative systematic review included 19 papers from 17 studies and identified themes involving relationships, grief, guilt, support, and the future. These reviews describe experiences and reported approaches; they do not establish one best method for every person.

How long should I grieve my cat?

There is no set timeline. Be patient with yourself and seek support if grief is affecting sleep, eating, everyday tasks, or relationships.

What can I do if people dismiss my grief?

Try to spend time with people who recognize how much your cat mattered. You can also set boundaries with people who minimize the loss; you do not have to prove that your grief is valid.

Should I make a memorial for my cat?

Only if it feels meaningful to you. A gathering, photo book, video, planting, saved fur clipping, or donation are possibilities, not requirements. Cornell notes that objects and memorials resonate with some people but not others.

When should I consider talking to a grief counselor?

Consider professional support if grief is affecting sleep, eating, ordinary tasks, or relationships, or if you feel invalidated, face relationship stress, or find that older concerns have resurfaced. A counselor can help you decide what support fits your situation.

You do not have to stop loving your cat to move through grief. Let yourself cry, take the next step that feels manageable, and reach for compassionate support when you need it.
