If your dog refuses to enter the crate, don’t push or place them inside. Make the door safe and secure in the open position, reward relaxed investigation and voluntary entry, then build up to meals, brief stays and short periods with the door closed. Keep each step comfortable; if your dog panics or tries to escape, stop and use a safer alternative while you seek help.
Why a dog may resist the crate
Refusal can have different causes: the enclosed space, the door or its sound, being confined, being left alone, or an immediate need such as toileting. Notice when the resistance starts and what is happening around it. Vocalizing alone does not tell you which cause is responsible.
UC Davis advises that crating may do little to reduce separation anxiety and can worsen anxiety for some dogs. A crate is not, by itself, treatment for distress about being alone.
Restart with voluntary, low-pressure practice
- Make the setup safe. Put the crate in a relatively calm location, make the inside comfortable, and secure the door fully open so it cannot swing shut or startle the dog. A different crate style may suit some dogs, but a covered or more enclosed crate is not automatically better.
- Reward relaxed interest. Place a few pieces of the dog’s usual food or treats near the crate. If they remain relaxed, gradually place rewards closer to the entrance and then just inside. Let the dog decide how far to go; don’t lure them farther than they are willing to enter.
- Let them leave freely. Keep early sessions short and allow the dog to exit whenever they choose. Reward voluntary entry and calm exploration. One step inside is not a reason to close the door.
- Add positive experiences. Once entering is comfortable, offer a meal or safe food enrichment inside while keeping the door open. Food should support a relaxed association, not distract the dog from distress.
- Build duration and door movement in tiny steps. Add a few seconds inside, then move the door briefly, then try a brief closure. Increase only while the dog stays comfortable. If they show worry, open the door and return to an easier step.
How to recognize distress—and when to stop
Whining or barking can signal stress, but context matters: a dog may also need to toilet, be hungry or be bored. Confinement anxiety can involve panting, salivation, whining, howling, barking, urinating or defecating, destructive escape attempts, or injury. Veterinary behaviorist Meredith Stepita, DVM, DACVB, describes these as possible signs; they are examples, not a diagnostic checklist.

Whining that starts soon after confinement, escalating panic, or intense escape attempts are not routine hurdles to train through. Stop the session and do not leave a panicking dog confined. The AKC warns that a dog trying to escape can injure themselves. Persistent distress, panic or escape attempts call for veterinary or qualified behavior support.
For an older dog, pain or mobility discomfort may also make prolonged confinement unsuitable. If distress appears related to being alone, observing the dog outside the crate—where safe—may help distinguish separation-related distress from discomfort with confinement.

What to use if the crate isn’t working
Some dogs do better in a larger puppy-proofed safe area, such as an exercise pen or a suitable room. Choose based on the individual dog’s observable comfort, safe containment, room to move, supervision needs, and whether the distress is linked to confinement or to your absence. No single option is best for every dog, and a larger area is an alternative space, not a treatment for anxiety.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Don’t shove, drag or otherwise force the dog into the crate.
- Don’t use the crate as punishment.
- Don’t leave a panicking dog to cry it out or keep lengthening a session as distress escalates.
- Don’t assume crating will resolve separation anxiety or prevent injury during escape attempts.
- Don’t confine a puppy beyond their toileting needs or any dog longer than they can comfortably manage. There is no universal duration that fits every dog.
How long does crate-training a reluctant dog take?
There is no established universal timeline or success rate for crate-training a reluctant dog. Progress depends on what is driving the resistance and whether the dog can stay relaxed at each stage. Advance when the current step is comfortable; if worry appears, make the next attempt easier rather than pushing ahead.
